Steelers Cut Justin Gilbert

The Steelers have cut cornerback Justin Gilbert, per a team announcement, thus ending a short tenure in Pittsburgh for the 25-year-old.
Justin Gilbert

Gilbert joined the Steelers last September via trade with the AFC North rival Browns, who acquired a 2018 sixth-round selection in return. That came just two years after the Browns used the eighth overall pick in the draft on Gilbert, an ex-Oklahoma State star whose success in college hasn’t translated to the pros. Gilbert logged only three starts in two years with the Browns, and he didn’t pick up any in 12 appearances with the Steelers. All told, he played just 11 defensive snaps in Pittsburgh and made one tackle.

Going forward, Gilbert’s 2017 cap charge – upward of $2.17MM – will come off the Steelers’ books, Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports (Twitter link).

Browns Claim Tyvis Powell

The Browns announced they have claimed defensive back Tyvis Powell off waivers from the Seahawks. Powell, an Ohio native, is entering his second season out of Ohio State. Tyvis Powell (vertical)

The 6’2″, 211 pound athlete joined Seattle as an undrafted free agent last year. After that, Powell spent the entire regular season on the Seahawks’ active roster and made cameos in eight games. He didn’t see a ton of action, but he did notch three special-teams tackles. The Browns saw more film on him during his Ohio State days, when he appeared in 42 games and let the team in interceptions during his final season there.

Powell may or may not stick with the Browns roster, but he now has the distinction of being the first player claimed off of waivers in the 2017 offseason system.

Former Lions TE Brandon Pettigrew Arrested

Former Lions tight end Brandon Pettigrew was arrested early Sunday morning in Oklahoma City and charged with disorderly conduct and public drunkenness, as Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com writes. Pettigrew, police say, shoved his friends as they tried to get him to leave the establishment. When police intervened, Pettigrew still refused to leave the premises and continues to push his friends around while also threatening to harm them. Brandon Pettigrew (Vertical)

Pettigrew, who will turn 32 on Feb. 23, has already been released from jail, but his legal situation remains open. He’s also likely to face league discipline for his actions, though he’ll have to first find an NFL home for the 2017 season before worrying about a potential suspension. The veteran was unable to take the field for the Lions in 2016 and he was ultimately released in December.

Once a target for Matthew Stafford in the passing game, Pettigrew has been used mainly as a blocking tight end for the last few years. Pettigrew caught only 17 passes for 137 yards between 2014 and 2015.

Poll: Do You View Kyle Shanahan Differently?

In the wake of what could have been the most exciting Super Bowl ever, everyone is trying to suss out exactly what happened: was Tom Brady a miracle worker or did the Falcons effectively give the game away? Things fell apart for Atlanta on both sides of the ball, but there is a lot of finger pointing in the direction of offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan. Kyle Shanahan (vertical)

Shanahan, who will serve as the next coach of the 49ers, was hired to help get the offense back on track after two abysmal years. The Niners are hoping that he’ll exercise better judgement than he did in the late stages of last night’s game. The Pats rallied back from a 28-3 deficit to bring the score to 28-20 late in regulation. Instead of running the ball three times at the Pats’ 22-yard-line with ~4:30 left, Shanahan got too cute and called for a deep pass play on second down. Ryan got sacked on the play and the Falcons’ subsequent attempts to dig out of the hole only pushed them further out of field goal range. Atlanta was forced to punt on fourth down, and that set up the Pats’ tying drive.

Should this be chalked up to a momentary lapse in judgement, or do you think less of Shanahan’s ability to lead SF after last night’s costly error? Vote here and explain your position in the comments below.

Patriots Win Super Bowl 51

On Sunday night, the Patriots pulled off an incredible comeback win to defeat the Falcons by a score of 34-28 in overtime. This is the Patriots’ fifth Super Bowl victory and it is unquestionably their most thrilling. "<strong

At one point, the Falcons held a 28-3 lead, but the Pats went on to score 25 points to force the game into OT. The Pats, of course, have Tom Brady to thank for leading the offensive charge. The legendary QB now has more Super Bowl rings than Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana (four) and finds himself tied with defensive end Charles Haley for the most championships in the Super Bowl era. A misread by Brady led to a costly pick six in the first half, but he went on to redeem himself in a major way. All in all, he completed 43 of 62 passes for 466 yards and two touchdowns.

We here at PFR congratulate the Patriots on their remarkable win.

Patriots Interested In Re-Signing Michael Floyd

The Patriots are interested in re-signing wide receiver Michael Floyd this offseason, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com tweets. Floyd was made a healthy scratch for the Super Bowl, leaving many to wonder about his future with the team beyond Sunday night. Last week, Floyd expressed a desire to re-sign with New England, so the interest now appears to be mutual. Michael Floyd (vertical)

I hope to be back in Foxborough,” Floyd said. “I love it here. I hope that I can make that happen, for sure.”

Reportedly, the Patriots tried to fit Floyd on the active roster for SB51, but they ultimately decided against it as they did not want to thin out their special teams or goal line offense. Without him, the Pats left themselves with four available receivers: Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Malcolm Mitchell, and Danny Amendola.

The Cardinals cut ties with Floyd when he was arrested for a DUI in December. Floyd’s blood alcohol content level was remarkably high, meaning that he was charged with Arizona’s “Super Extreme DUI” designation. As a result, Floyd could face a mandatory 180 days in jail. At minimum, he can expect punishment from the NFL in the 2017 season.

Latest On Falcons, Matt Ryan

Over the weekend, Falcons owner Arthur Blank made it clear that he is going to work on extending Matt Ryan as soon as he can this offseason. Blank knows what it might take to re-up Ryan, and that includes make him the highest-paid quarterback, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter) hears. Matt Ryan

Currently, the highest-paid QB in the NFL is Andrew Luck thanks to his five-year, ~$123MM extension signed with the Colts on June 29, 2016. But, after an incredible 2016 season, the Falcons are already thinking about setting a new watermark with Ryan. Ryan’s current contract takes him through the 2018 season, but Blank apparently does not want to get near that date before discussing a deal.

“When Matt was being interviewed this week, somebody asked him, ‘What do you think about Tom Brady, his age, being 39 and will be 40 in August?’ and Matt said, ‘I’d like to play as long as Tom,’ ” Blank said recently. “That’s when I jumped up off the sofa and starting clicking my heels. We have a lot of young talent on both sides of the ball. But to have our quarterback in place for an extended period of time will be incredible news for Atlanta. Matt is in great shape and takes wonderful care of himself. So, I’m excited.”

Ryan finished the year as Pro Football Focus’ No. 2 quarterback in the NFL, second only to tonight’s opposing QB (Brady). Ryan has long been regarded as a solid starting quarterback, but this year he was undeniably in the top tier at his position.

As it stands, Ryan is scheduled to carry a $23.75MM cap charge in 2017 and a $21.65MM cap charge in 2018.

Dolphins Notes: Tunsil, Albert, Stills, Lacey

As the Patriots play for the championship, here’s a look at one of their divisional rivals, courtesy of The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson:

  • A prominent Dolphins front office executive has been telling people that the Dolphins have a future Hall of Fame tackle in Laremy Tunsil, a source tells Jackson. If Tunsil’s immediate future is at the tackle position, that could prompt the team to shuffle some things on the O-Line. The Dolphins have not indicated to left tackle Branden Albert that he will be released, but they have been non-committal about whether Tunsil will move to the outside in 2017. Albert would carry a $10.6MM cap hit if he’s on the team in 2017 but he’d only be on the books for $3.4MM if he’s cut or traded. Last year, Albert had a career-worst 42.2 score on Pro Football Focus. He also missed four games due to injury.
  • An “associate” of Kenny Stills says the wide receiver likes the West Coast and an offer from an AFC West or NFC West team could be attractive. At the same time, both Stills and the Fins have expressed interest in a reunion. Stills figures to be a popular guy if he reaches the open market in March and the Eagles reportedly are among the teams eyeing him.
  • The agent for linebacker Deon Lacey claims the Dolphins have such high regard for his client that they told him he can compete for a starting job. Of course, as a reserve/futures signee, he’ll first have to make the team. The agent said 12 teams, including the Patriots, made offers on the former CFL standout.

5 Key Stories: 1/29/17 – 2/5/17

49ers travel outside the box for GM hire: Although it occurred last Sunday, the 49ers hiring John Lynch as their general manager remains the personnel-related story of the week. Although the former Fox analyst helped out the Broncos with some scouting in recent years, he is devoid of serious personnel experience. But the 45-year-old first-time GM received a six-year contract, like the one Kyle Shanahan is expected to sign soon. Lynch hired Broncos executive Adam Peters, will give assistant GM Tom Gamble more time to prove himself, and the 49ers may have more experienced execs on their docket. Mike Shanahan, though, won’t follow his son to the Bay Area. Nevertheless, San Francisco will have an interesting arrangement, with Lynch controlling the 90-man roster, free agency and the draft, as Shanahan assumes command of the team’s 53-man roster.

San Francisco’s on-field plans taking shape?: Colin Kaepernick is unlikely to be part of the 49ers’ roster for a seventh season; the 29-year-old passer plans to opt out of his contract. The 49ers remain interested in Kirk Cousins due to the dearth of available QBs and Kyle Shanahan’s previous work with him while in Washington. But a Jimmy Garoppolo trade, with a Matt Schaub contingency plan, also could be in the cards. The team has identified two candidates thus far — Patriots linebackers coach Brian Flores and former Jaguars ‘backers boss Robert Saleh — as DC options.

Raiders/Las Vegas partnership in trouble: Previously gaining steam in time for a possible March vote, one that would come with a lack of a viable Oakland plan, the Raiders’ Las Vegas venture endured a bad week. Las Vegas Sands owner Sheldon Adelson’s relationship with the Raiders showed signs of strain in the past, but the controversial billionaire withdrew from the project this week. Shortly after, news emerged Goldman Sachs — another key backer in this operation — threatened to pull out of this near-$2 billion proposal. The Raiders remain committed to Vegas, but sources told Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole the deal is “all but dead.” While Vincent Bonsignore of the Los Angeles Daily News offered evidence to the contrary, San Diego has now inquired about a Raiders relationship less than a month after losing the Chargers.

Fitzgerald coming back to Cardinals; Palmer to follow?: Larry Fitzgerald and Carson Palmer were both considering retirement as recently as a week ago, but the future Hall of Fame wide receiver will be back for a 14th season. Fitz’s thought process included Palmer, but he’s committed without knowing if the four-year Cards quarterback will play again. Conflicting reports had Palmer’s Arizona house on the market, but Bruce Arians attempted to shed some light on his own view of the matter. The fifth-year Cardinals coach expects Palmer to announce he’ll be back for a fifth season in Arizona soon.

Tony Romo derby taking shape: After a report last week put the Broncos as potential suitors only if Romo reaches free agency, other teams’ statuses — and the 36-year-old quarterback’s preferences — began to surface. Romo wants to play for a contender, and the Broncos, Chiefs, Texans and Cardinals are believed to be on the four-time Pro Bowler’s short list. The Bills are interested in Romo but do not profile as a contender for whom the veteran passer would want to play. The Texans are not planning to pursue Romo, instead preferring to draft a quarterback to possibly take over for Brock Osweiler. The Chiefs, though, are said to be looking to upgrade at quarterback. Alex Smith is signed for two more seasons, but the dead money component of this equation is now manageable for Kansas City. Romo has no plans to retire despite interest from TV networks.
