Cardinals DB Josh Shaw Suspended For Betting On NFL Games

Josh Shaw will draw a season-long suspension. The NFL suspended the fifth-year defensive back for the entire 2020 season for betting on NFL games. An appeal must be filed within three days.

Currently stationed on the Cardinals’ IR list, Shaw bet on multiple games this season, according to the NFL. While a league investigation did not find Shaw to have used inside information, this is still a major development. The nature of this infraction certainly makes the Friday after Thanksgiving a logical target for this news dump. Shaw cannot apply for reinstatement until Feb. 15, 2021.

“The continued success of the NFL depends directly on each of us doing everything possible to safeguard the integrity of the game and the reputations of all who participate in the league,” Roger Goodell said in a statement. “At the core of this responsibility is the longstanding principle that betting on NFL games, or on any element of a game, puts at risk the integrity of the game, damages public confidence in the NFL, and is forbidden under all circumstances. If you work in the NFL in any capacity, you may not bet on NFL football.”

While this will not register on the same level as Paul Hornung and Alex Karras‘ season-long gambling bans in 1963, with Shaw being a journeyman, it’s still quite the late-season development. It is not known if Shaw bet on Cardinals games, though Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic tweets Shaw is not believed to have been around the team since going on IR in August.

Shaw, 27, was a 12-game Bengals starter in 2016. The 2015 fourth-round pick played at Florida and USC and has spent most of his career as a backup with the Bengals, Chiefs and Buccaneers. The Cardinals signed Shaw to a one-year, $895K deal in March. This ban certainly puts the veteran defender’s career in jeopardy.

Patrick Peterson Seeking Cards Extension

Still attached to a contract he signed in 2014, Patrick Peterson has not enjoyed a strong 2019. The All-Pro cornerback will head into the offseason after a season marred by a six-game PED suspension, but he will be ready to discuss another Cardinals extension.

The Cardinals, though, have not approached the 29-year-old defender about a third deal, per Bob McManamon of the Arizona Republic. Peterson has not set a deadline for those potential talks. Arizona has resisted other teams’ interest in acquiring Peterson via trade, and Steve Keim has said he wants the three-time All-Pro to retire as a Cardinal.

After requesting a trade last year, Peterson has backtracked and hopes to play his entire career in Arizona. This points to extension talks commencing at some point next year.

“When that time presents itself, I’ll be ready,” Peterson said of an extension. “But at the end of the day, I have to make sure I’m playing the best football that I can so those talks can happen and I can get what I deserve.”

While Peterson signed his five-year, $70MM deal more than five years ago, the cornerback market has not changed much since. Peterson remains the NFL’s fifth-highest-paid corner, with his $14MM-AAV price trailing Xavien Howard‘s top-market deal by barely $1MM.

With Peterson finishing out a suspension-shortened season, and rating as Pro Football Focus’ No. 88 corner entering Week 13, negotiations between he and the Cards will be a bit different next year. Jalen Ramsey‘s Rams talks figure to overshadow other corners’ discussions as well, with the recently traded standout poised to change the stagnant market at this position.

Practice Notes: Eagles, Jets, Cardinals

The Eagles got positive news on the injury front regarding three of their biggest weapons Wednesday, according to Ian Rapoport. Wide receivers Alshon Jeffery (ankle) and Nelson Agholor (knee) are full participants in practice today and running back Jordan Howard (shoulder), while not yet back to practice, is “trending the right way.”

All three players missed Sunday’s game against the Seahawks, Jeffery and Howard have not played since November 3rd. Philadelphia’s offense has struggled mightily in recent weeks. Most of the blame has fallen on the shoulders of quarterback Carson Wentz, but it would surely help their signalcaller to have some more weapons.

Here’s some more notes on practice status around the league:

  • Jets head coach Adam Gase told reporters he expects cornerback Darryl Roberts is expected to return after missing two games with a calf injury, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN. Right tackle Chuma Edoga will not practice today and left tackle Kelvin Beachum will be limited as well. The Jets are in the midst of a three-game win streak in hopes to rebound from what looked like a lost season.
  • While Cardinals offensive tackle Jordan Mills was designated for return from the injured reserve earlier today, cornerback Robert Alford, though, will not be joining his teammate, according to Darren Urban of AZCardinals.com. Alford, a six-year veteran, fractured his tibia prior to the season and was placed on injured reserve with the possibility to return. However, per Urban, that possibility is no longer an option.

Cardinals Designate Jordan Mills To Return From IR

The Cardinals designated offensive tackle Jordan Mills to return from the injured reserve on Tuesday, according to Curtis Crabtree of Pro Football Talk. Arizona has been without their starting right tackle since Week 4.

Mills was signed in Week 2 after the team’s starting right tackle Marcus Gilbert suffered a season-ending ACL injury. Justin Murray got the first crack at Gilbert’s spot along the offensive line, but Arizona shifted to Mills after a week. However, in Week 4, Mills was touch-and-go with a knee injury and was only able to play sparingly. After the game the team placed him on injured reserve, returning Murray to the starting lineup.

A seven-year veteran, Mills is one of the most experienced blockers along the Cardinals offensive line. Since entering the league in 2013, Mills has started 84 games at right tackle, including all of the Bills 48 regular-season games from 2016-2018. While he has never been considered an elite player, he has been a consistent option.

The young Cardinals have had a productive first season under head coach Kliff Kingsbury. Rookie quarterback Kyler Murray has led a top-ten offense without much help along the offensive line. Mills, who is eligible to return in Week 14, could help improve the unit. Now that Mills has been designated for return, he will get to practice for up to 21 days before the team must place him back on the 53-man roster or return him to IR for the rest of the season.

Mychal Kendricks‘ sentencing date keeps getting postponed, and the Seahawks keep reaping the rewards. Per Brady Henderson of ESPN.com, Kendricks is now due to be sentenced for insider trading — which he pleaded guilty to in September 2018 — in February 2020 (Twitter link). The date has been pushed back five times now, and instead of losing Kendricks on November 21 (the most recent date), Seattle will have their starting weakside ‘backer for its playoff run.

Now for more from the NFC West:

  • The Cardinals signed tight end Maxx Williams to a modest one-year, $805K pact this offseason, but they have been impressed enough with his performance — especially as a pass blocker — to sign him to an extension several days ago. And he will get a sizable raise, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com says the two-year pact, which keeps Williams in the desert through 2021, is worth $7MM (Twitter link).
  • 49ers CB Jason Verrett and DL Kentavius Street are both getting healthier and are candidates to come off of IR at some point this season, as Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area (citing head coach Kyle Shanahan) tweets. Both players have had difficult injury luck in their careers, so this is encouraging news, and San Francisco would surely love to have Verrett and Street as depth for the stretch run.
  • The news is not as good for 49ers rookie WR Jalen Hurd, as Shanahan says it’s unlikely Hurd will be ready to come off of IR this year (Twitter link via Maiocco).
  • The 49ers are also planning on being without DE Dee Ford for a couple of weeks, per Maiocco (via Twitter). Injuries have limited Ford during his first year in San Francisco, though he has managed to post 6.5 sacks. Ford is currently dealing with a hamstring injury.

Cardinals Sign Maxx Williams To Extension

Kliff Kingsbury‘s offense does not feature too much from the tight end position, statistically speaking, but the Cardinals have been pleased with Maxx Williams‘ contributions. The parties agreed on a new contract Saturday.

The team announced Williams signed a two-year extension that will tie him to the Cardinals through the 2021 season. Williams signed a one-year, $805K deal this offseason.

Williams has made 11 receptions for 139 yards. While the 12.6 yards per catch represents a career-high figure, the fifth-year player has not been targeted more than three times in a game this season. The former Ravens second-round pick has caught more than one pass in a game just once all year. He leads Cards tight ends with 277 snaps, edging fellow first-year Cardinal Charles Clay‘s 248.

Pro Football Focus has given Williams a middle-of-the-road run-blocking assessment but views him as one of the best pass-blocking tight ends this season. While Arizona has used its tight ends sparingly in an offense that features plenty of four-wideout, one-running back looks, the team will keep one of its role players around for at least another year.

Cardinals Place LB Brooks Reed On IR

The Cardinals signed Brooks Reed this offseason and used him in a reserve capacity. But the pass rusher’s time with the team could be over.

Arizona placed Reed on IR Friday, doing so because of a hamstring injury the 32-year-old linebacker sustained. Reed played in all nine Cardinals games this season after signing a one-year, $1.63MM contract.

Reed played four years with both the Texans and Falcons but saw his Atlanta run end this year when the team made him a cap casualty. After a one-sack 2018, Reed added one sack and five tackles this season. Reed’s sack totals have declined since his 2011 rookie season, when he recorded six. He has 22.5 for his career.

To replace Reed on the 53-man roster, the Cardinals promoted linebacker Pete Robertson. They also elevated cornerback Chris Jones from their taxi squad.
