Lions, LT Taylor Decker Agree On Extension

A mostly quiet offseason between the Lions and their cornerstone left tackle ended up still producing the endgame the parties wanted. The Lions and Taylor Decker agreed on an extension Tuesday.

The sides agreed on a four-year, $60MM pact (Twitter links). The final season is voidable, per Rapoport. More details will shake out here, but the Lions have their top tackle signed long-term.

This will not put Decker in the Laremy Tunsil neighborhood, ensuring that the Texans’ $22MM-per-year tackle remains in his own financial sector, and the per-year value is somewhat interesting. While the former first-round pick has never made a Pro Bowl, he has still given the Lions somewhat of a discount. At $15MM per year in new money, Decker’s deal comes in fifth overall at his position and behind multiple left tackle contracts agreed to more than two years ago. It does, however, come in ahead of recent pacts given to Dion Dawkins and D.J. Humphries.

Decker, 27, has started 55 games for the Lions since they took him 16th overall in 2016. The team now has two tackles signed to lucrative deals, with this agreement coming after Detroit inked Halapoulivaati Vaitai in March. Decker graded as last season’s No. 20 overall tackle, per Pro Football Focus.

Lions Work Out QB DeShone Kizer

Another team is giving DeShone Kizer a look. NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero tweets that the quarterback auditioned for the Lions today.

The 2017 second-rounder started 15 games for the Browns as a rookie, completing 53.6-percent of his passes for 2,894 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also added 419 rushing yards and five scores on 77 carries. Of course, Kizer also tossed 22 interceptions and went 0-15, and Cleveland dumped in a trade to Green Bay during the 2018 offseason.

The Notre Dame product got into three games with the Packers in 2018, but he was cut by the organization at the end of the 2019 preseason. He later caught on with the Raiders, and he spent most of the season on their roster despite never getting on the field. He was waived by the organization back in May. Since that time, Kizer had a workout with the Titans, but he left Tennessee without a deal.

The Lions don’t seem like they’re necessarily in need of a backup quarterback behind Matthew Stafford. The team inked Chase Daniel to a three-year, $13.05MM deal this past offseason, and they’re still rostering David Blough, who started five games for Detroit last season.

Kizer wasn’t the only player to work out for the Lions on Thursday. The team also hosted wideouts Lee Morris and A.J. Taylor.

Lions Sign RB Jonathan Williams

The Lions have signed running back Jonathan Williams, per a club announcement. To make room, the Lions dropped fellow RB Wes Hills

[RELATED: Lions Work Out QB Trevor Siemian]

Williams made some noise as a fifth-round Bills rookie in 2016, running for 92 yards on 27 carries. Since then, he’s lived life on the fringe of the NFL. Two seasons with the Saints yielded just three appearances. Last year, he suited up nine times for the Colts, averaging 4.8 yards per carry in a small sample size. All in all, he had 235 yards off of 49 carries with one score.

The Arkansas product will join the Lions’ ~80-man roster and try to make the final cut for Week 1. As it stands, the Lions have Kerryon Johnson, promising rookie D’Andre Swift, and Bo Scarbrough atop their RB depth chart.
