49ers Sign DT Jay Bromley
The 49ers made a handful of roster moves this morning (via ESPN’s Nick Wagoner on Twitter). The team has signed wideout Chris Thompson and cut receiver Max McCaffrey. The 49ers have also added veteran defensive tackle Jay Bromley while placing lineman Kapron Lewis-Moore on the injured reserve.
Thompson, 25, went undrafted out of Florida in 2017, but he proceeded to appear in 13 games for the Texans as a rookie. He ultimately finished that campaign with five receptions for 84 yards, and he also had 23 combined kick/punt returns. After being waived by Houston last August, Thompson proceeded to play for the Orlando Apollos of the AAF.
McCaffrey has bounced around the NFL since going undrafted out of Duke in 2015. The 25-year-old appeared in one game for the 49ers last season, and he’s collected one reception and one punt return during his brief career.
Bromley is the most experienced player of the bunch. The former third-rounder spent the first four seasons of his career with the Giants, compiling 76 tackles and a pair of sacks in 55 games. He signed with the Saints last offseason, but he was limited to only two games after suffering a torn biceps.
Kapron Lewis-Moore, 29, is a bit of a journeyman, appearing in five games during his six-year career. He signed a reserve/future contract with the 49ers back in January, and the team seems to be stashing him on their IR as he recovers from a groin injury.

Saints Sign Goodson, Cut Bromley
The Saints have signed free agent cornerback Demetri Goodson and released defensive tackle Jay Bromley, according to Adam Caplan of SiriusXM (Twitter link) and Josh Katzenstein of the Times-Picayune (Twitter link).
Bromley, a former third-round pick, served as a Giants depth cog for four seasons, playing in 55 games from 2014-17. He joined the Saints in May and released in September, but was brought back on Sept. 17. He’s out of work for now, but he could be back before long since the Saints have made a habit of add/dropping the same player throughout the season.
Goodson now joins the mix after a successful workout on Sept. 26. The cornerback has been on the workout circuit since missing the Packers’ final cut and will finally have an opportunity to showcase his skills this season. The 29-year-old hasn’t seen live action since November of 2016, but his next opportunity could come soon as the Saints are working with a banged up secondary.
The Saints also fortified their cornerback group this week by adding cornerback Josh Robinson.
Saints To Bring Back DT Jay Bromley
Jay Bromley‘s spent a couple of weeks on the NFL in-season workout circuit, but the defensive tackle will rejoin the Saints.
With Tyeler Davison battling a foot injury, the Saints will bring back Bromley after cutting him prior to the regular season, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets.
The former third-round pick served as a Giants depth cog for four seasons, playing in 55 games from 2014-17. He joined the Saints in May before being released in September. Bromley’s since worked out for the Bills and Lions.
Bromley will join David Onyemata and rookie UDFA Taylor Stallworth as Saints defensive tackles, presumably set to play as a backup behind Onyemata in the event Davison must miss time. Davison started in Week 1 but missed the Saints’ Week 2 game. Onyemata started alongside Sheldon Rankins against the Browns.
Lions Work Out DT Chris Baker
The Lions worked out defensive tackles Chris Baker, Jay Bromley, and Kendall Reyes on Wednesday, according to Adam Caplan of SiriusXM (Twitter link).
Cincinnati inked Baker to a one-year, $2.45MM deal in March in the hopes that he’d become its starting nose tackle opposite All-Pro three-technique Geno Atkins. However, Baker struggled during the preseason, often getting defeated in both the run and pass game, and was severely outplayed by third-year pro Andrew Billings. The Bengals released Baker just prior to final cutdowns, and he hasn’t drawn any other known interest thus far.
Baker, 30, spent the 2017 campaign with the Buccaneers after signing a three-year pact last March. Although he’d played like of the league’s better interior defenders from 2015-16, Baker struggled in 2017, grading as just the No. 96 defensive tackle among 122 qualifiers, per Pro Football Focus, and was subsequently released after only a single season in Tampa Bay.
Detroit attempted to fortify its interior defensive line this offseason after losing veteran Haloti Ngata by adding several free agents of their own. Defensive tackles Ricky Jean-Francois and Sylvester Williams were each inked to contracts, while versatile lineman Da’Shawn Hand was brought in via the draft.
