Packers To Re-Sign Brett Goode

The Packers technically do not have a long snapper on the roster, but that won’t be the case for long. Green Bay will re-sign Brett Goode today, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com.

Goode worked out for the Packers on Saturday and passed his physical, according to a source who spoke with Demovsky. Goode snapped in every game for the Packers from 2008 until he suffered a season-ending ACL tear in December. His contract expired after the 2015 season, but the Packers continued to stay in touch.

The Packers must make a roster move today in order to bring Goode back on the roster.

Packers Work Out Brett Goode

  • Long snapper Brett Goode worked out for the Packers today, reports Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com. Goode, who had been with Green Bay since 2008, is expected to sign tomorrow if he checks out medically. The Packers don’t currently have a long snapper on their roster.

Packers Release Josh Sitton

3:30pm: The Packers have announced the move.

3:13pm: The Packers will release Sitton, according to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.

1:34pm: The Packers plan to release guard Josh Sitton today if they cannot trade him, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com. Green Bay has informed other clubs in recent days that Sitton is available, tweets Mike Garfolo of NFL.com.Josh Sitton (Vertical)

Sitton, 30, is a three-time Pro Bowler who has long been considered one of the best — if not the best — guards in the NFL, so the Packers’ willingness to move on from him certainly comes as a surprise. In eight seasons in Green Bay, Sitton has appeared in 121 games, starting 112, while delivering dominant results on the interior of the offensive line.

Entering the final year of his contract, Sitton is scheduled to earn $6.15MM in base salary and count $6.85MM against the cap. The Packers would be able to clear nearly all that space, save for the $300K workout bonus that they’ve likely already paid.

Link Between Mike Neal, Guyer Institute?

This afternoon, the NFL cleared three of the four linebackers mentioned in the now infamous Al-Jazeera America documentary. The one player who has yet to be OK’d by the league is Mike Neal. That could be because Neal’s interview took place later than the talks with James Harrison, Julius Peppers, and Clay Matthews. It’s also possible that the NFL is still investigating the link between Neal and the Guyer Institute. Mike Neal (vertical)

For what it’s worth Neal did have a relationship with people at Guyer Institute, according to Jason Cole of Bleacher Report (on Twitter). The quick resolution for the other three, meanwhile, supports the claim that they did not know anyone at the Indiana-based company (link).

Neal, 29, started a career-high 15 games last season and has posted at least four sacks in each of the past four years. However, he has drawn very little in the way of free agent interest this offseason. A suspension from the NFL would further hurt his chances of continuing his career.

NFL Clears Harrison, Matthews, Peppers

The NFL has cleared James Harrison, Clay Matthews, and Julius Peppers in the PED probe, a source tells Tom Pelissero of USA Today (on Twitter). There was “no credible evidence” found in the league’s investigation or interviews. Al Jazeera (vertical)

Late last year, a documentary from Al- Jazeera America linked Harrison, Matthews, Peppers, Peyton Manning, and Mike Neal to a pharmaceutical company in Indiana where Charles Sly claimed that he supplied athletes with performance enhancing drugs. Since then, the NFL has been investigating the five players named and recently began the process of interviewing them.

Manning immediately consented, but the other players were opposed to the interviews and fought back per the advise of the NFLPA. Eventually, Harrison, Matthews, Peppers, and Neal (after some additional deliberation) agreed to do the interviews. Roughly one week later, the first three have been cleared by the league office while there is no word just yet on Neal.

Packers Claim Schum, Cut Masthay

  • The Packers have released punter Tim Masthay to make room for fellow punter Jacob Schum, whom they claimed on waivers from the Buccaneers, Tom Silverstein of the Journal-Sentinel tweets.

Packers Trade Lerentee McCray To Bills

The Bills are set to acquire linebacker Lerentee McCray from the Packers in exchange for draft pick compensation, tweets Adam Schefter of ESPN.com. The Packers will receive a conditional 2018 seventh-round draft choice, per an announcement from the Bills. The Packers have also made a handful of roster moves, bringing them down to 75 in advance of the deadline.

Released:

  • WR Harvey Binford

Placed on IR:

McCray appeared in 24 regular season games for the Broncos over the last two years. This offseason, he was a restricted free agent but he was not tendered an offer. In April, he hooked on with the Packers.

Colt Lyerla Arrested For Heroin Possession

The story of Colt Lyerla took a sad turn today as the former Oregon standout was arrested for heroin possession, as Tim Brown of The Oregonian writes. Colt Lyerla (vertical)

As a true freshman for Chip Kelly‘s Oregon Ducks in 2011, the tight end caught seven passes for 147 yards and 5 touchdowns. In 2013, Lyerla was getting into trouble off the field and ultimately quit the program. Soon after, he was arrested and later pleaded guilty to cocaine possession. After going undrafted, Lyerla signed on with the Packers but suffered a season-ending knee injury prior to the 2014 season. Lyerla’s agent said that the Packers indicated he would still be in the team’s plans, but they never circled back to him for one reason or another.
