Sunday NFL Transactions: AFC East

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four AFC East teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Bills, Dolphins, Patriots, and Jets are noted below.

Additionally, as of 12:00pm CT today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

Bills Release LB Sam Barrington From IR

The Bills reached an injury settlement with veteran linebacker Sam Barrington and released him from IR, a source tells Tom Pelissero of USA Today (on Twitter). Barrington should be healthy in a couple weeks and at that point he’ll be free to sign with another club. Sam Barrington (vertical)

Barrington was one of ~30 players left off the roster by the Bills on Saturday as they trimmed down to a 53-man squad. The linebacker spent the first years of his career with the Packers before bouncing around the league last year. He appeared in 22 games (eight starts) while with Green Bay, but it’s fair to wonder if he’ll get another chance to see legitimate playing time after such a forgettable season.

Before signing with Buffalo, the only mention we heard of his name was a May workout for the Jaguars.

Bills Sign Sam Barrington, Baccari Rambo

The Bills have signed linebacker Sam Barrington, safety Bacarri Rambo, and offensive lineman Karim Barton, according to a team announcement. To make room, linebacker Anthony Harrell has been cut and center Patrick Lewis has been waived/injured. Sam Barrington (vertical)

Barrington spent the first three years of his career with the Packers but was waived before last year’s 53-man cut. The Chiefs claimed him off waivers, but he did not record an official statistic in his two games there and was quickly discarded. In November, he signed with the Saints and finished out the year there. It has been a quiet offseason for Barrington. Before today, the only mention we heard of his name was a May workout for the Jaguars.

Rambo, 27, hooked on with the Dolphins midway through the 2016 season. In nine games (five starts), he recorded 39 total tackles, one interceptions, and three passes defensed.

Barton has bounced around for a few years, being signed to reserve/futures deals by the Browns (2015), Texans (’16) and Titans (’17). The 25-year-old has never played in a game.

The Bills claimed Lewis off waivers from the Seahawks in late August and, in an unorthodox move, signed him to a one-year extension less than two weeks later. Per the terms of that deal, Lewis was slated to earn $1.2MM in 2017.

Jaguars Work Out LB Sam Barrington

The Jaguars worked out linebacker Sam Barrington last Friday, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link). Barrington went to high school at nearby Terry Parker High, so this would mark a homecoming for the veteran. Sam Barrington

Barrington spent the first three years of his career with the Packers but was waived before last year’s 53-man cut, leading him to the Packers. The Chiefs claimed him off waivers, but he did not record an official statistic in his two games there and was quickly cut. In November, he signed with the Saints and finished out the year there.

The Jaguars have been kicking the tires on veteran LB help by meeting with Gerald Hodges as well as Mike Morgan. Jacksonville also worked out a notable name in cornerback Alterraun Verner. This week, they’ll host wide receiver Victor Cruz on a visit.

Saints To Sign LB Sam Barrington

The Saints are signing linebacker Sam Barrington, according to Alex Marvez of The Sporting News (on Twitter). Barrington has been looking for work since being cut by Kansas City last week. Sam Barrington (vertical)

Barrington will help to provide depth after the Saints placed linebacker James Laurinaitis on injured reserve. The Laurinaitis shutdown allowed New Orleans to activate rookie Sheldon Rankins, but they were left thin when it comes to true linebackers. Before Barrington, the Saints had Craig Robertson, Michael Mauti, Dannell Ellerbe, Nathan Stupar, and Stephone Anthony in the LB group. Now, they once again have one reserve for each starter.

Barrington spent the first three seasons of his career with the Packers but he was waived earlier this year, leading him to the Chiefs. In Kansas City, Barrington made only two appearances on the year. He’s hoping to again see the kind of burn he got in 2014 with Green Bay when he suited up for 14 games and made seven starts in 2014.

Lions Work Out Sam Barrington, Sio Moore

The Lions tried out free agent linebackers Sam Barrington and Sio Moore, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk (Twitter link). Those two have been on the market since the Chiefs cut them Monday.

Before joining the Chiefs via waivers prior to Week 1, Barrington spent the first three seasons of his career with the Packers – one of the Lions’ NFC North rivals. Barrington suited up for 14 games and made seven starts in 2014, but he combined for just eight appearances in his other two seasons in Green Bay. Only one of those appearances came last year for Barrington, who suffered a major foot injury in Week 1. He ended up logging two appearances with the Chiefs before they parted with him.

Moore lasted less than a month in Kansas City, which signed him shortly after the Colts waived him Oct. 4. Moore only saw action in one of the Chiefs’ games, and he didn’t record a statistic in KC after beginning the year with 30 tackles in Indianapolis. The 26-year-old’s best seasons were his first two in the NFL – 2013 and ’14 – as he combined for 26 appearances (22 starts), 140 tackles, 7.5 sacks and two forced fumbles with the Raiders. Oakland, which used a third-round pick on Moore, then traded him to Indy for a sixth-rounder prior to last season and the Liberia-born defender hasn’t had much success since.

It’s currently unclear if the Lions are interested in signing either Barrington or Moore. The DeAndre Levy-less club made other changes to its linebacker group late last month in re-signing Josh Bynes and trading Kyle Van Noy to the Patriots.

Minor NFL Transactions: 11/1/16

Here are today’s minor moves.

  • The Cardinals re-signed guard Taylor Boggs and promoted safety Christian Bryant from the practice squad. Boggs, who also has the ability to play center, has seven career games under his belt. Meanwhile, Bryant has yet to take the field this season after playing in nine games in 2015.
  • The Titans have promoted wide receiver Tre McBride from the practice squad, according to Jim Wyatt of TitansOnline.com. The former seventh-round pick had a pair of catches in 2015, but he found himself on the team’s practice squad to begin the season.
  • The Colts have elevated cornerback Frankie Williams to the 53-man roster from the practice squad and released tight end Chase Coffman, as ESPN.com’s Mike Wells tweets. Williams will provide depth as Vontae Davis goes through the league’s concussion protocol. The release of Coffman, meanwhile, could be a sign that tight end Dwayne Allen is getting close to returning from his ankle injury.
  • The Seahawks have swapped one defensive end for another. The team announced (via Twitter) that they’ve signed Damontre Moore to the 53-man roster, releasing Malliciah Goodman to make the necessary room. Moore, 24, has 9.5 career sacks, but he was previously cut by the Giants for violating team rules. Goodman appeared in one game for the Seahawks this season.
  • The Chiefs have promoted linebacker Terrance Smith from the practice squad to the active roster, according to his agent (on Twitter). Smith originally joined the organization as an undrafted free agent out of Florida State. Meanwhile, to make room on the roster, the team has released linebacker Sam Barrington (via Greg Auman on Twitter). Barrington has only been active for two games this season.
  • More bad news for the Chiefs on the injury front. ESPN’s Adam Caplan tweets that starting left guard Parker Ehinger will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL. A fourth-round pick in this past year’s draft, Ehinger started four of his five games this season.

Chiefs To Release LB Sam Barrington

Barrington was dropped by the Packers prior to the 53-man deadline this year. The Chiefs moved quickly to pick him up but he did not have much of an impact for them this year, appearing in two games without an official statistic.

In 2015, Barrington’s season ended during Week 1 when he suffered a major foot injury. In 2014, his last real season, Barrington appeared in 14 games for the Packers with seven starts. The former seventh-round pick racked up 66 total tackles, two pass deflections, and one sack in that season.
