Minor NFL Transactions: 5/30/24
Today’s minor moves:
Kansas City Chiefs
- Signed: DE Malik Herring
New York Giants
- Signed: DB Elijah Riley
- Waived/injured: RB Gary Brightwell
Malik Herring was an exclusive rights free agent, meaning he was all but destined to return to Kansas City. The former UDFA has spent the past two seasons with the organization, compiling 16 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 14 games. Herring also got into all four playoff games this past season.
Elijah Riley joins the Giants after having appeared in 30 games with the Eagles, Jets, and Steelers. He got into a career-high 13 games with Pittsburgh this past season, finishing with 12 tackles while earning the majority of his snaps on special teams. Gary Brightwell was a sixth-round pick by the Giants in 2021, but he struggled to carve out a role behind Saquon Barkley. Brightwell’s tenure in New York will end with the RB having collected 256 yards from scrimmage.

Placed on reserve/NFI list:
Placed on reserve/PUP list:
Long will miss the Chiefs’ first six games. The recently unretired offensive lineman suffered a knee injury in June. While Long was part of the Chiefs’ extensive offseason offensive line puzzle, the team made several moves to create O-line depth after its Super Bowl LV blocking debacle. Kansas City traded for left tackle Orlando Brown Jr., signed guard Joe Thuney and center Austin Blythe, and drafted center Creed Humphrey and guard Trey Smith. Long and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, who opted out last year and came up in trade calls this week, are not expected to start but would stand to provide high-end depth on Kansas City’s retooled line.
The Chiefs took Powell in the fifth round. The Clemson alum would make sense as a practice squad candidate, but the Chiefs will run the risk of anther team claiming the rookie wideout and preventing such a scenario. Kansas City lost Sammy Watkins but returns the likes of Mecole Hardman, Byron Pringle and Demarcus Robinson as supporting-cast receivers.

Chiefs Sign Second-Round C Creed Humphrey
After completing a deal with their No. 58 pick earlier today, the Chiefs have now signed No. 63. The team announced that they’ve signed center Creed Humphrey to his rookie pact.

The six-foot-five, 312-pound lineman was a standout during his time at Oklahoma, earning a pair of Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year awards. After playing three years (not including a redshirt season) with the Sooners, Humphrey gave up his final year of eligibility and entered the draft. He was selected with Kansas City’s own second-round selection.
The Chiefs have been focused on revamping their offensive line this offseason, but Humphrey should have a good opportunity to start at center as a rookie. He’ll face competition from free agent addition Austin Blythe and 2020 undrafted free agent Darryl Williams.
The Chiefs have been active today, signing all of their draft picks and acquiring Mike Hughes from the Vikings. The team also announced that they’ve added eight undrafted free agents:
- DB Zayne Anderson
- DB Dicaprio Bootle
- QB Shane Buechele
- DB Marlon Character
- LB Riley Cole
- DE Malik Herring
- DB Devon Key
- DB Jaylon McClain-Sapp
