Pats Notes: Lomu, Montgomery, Brown
Patriots first-round pick Caleb Lomu is expected to operate as their swing tackle during his rookie season, but he may also see time along the interior of the offensive line. In addition to playing both tackle positions, Lomu lined up at guard during spring workouts, per ESPN’s Mike Reiss.
Lomu has impressed head coach Mike Vrabel, who said: “I love the versatility. He learns quickly [and] usually doesn’t make the same mistake twice.”
Lomu, the 28th overall pick, joined the Patriots after a two-year run as the starting left tackle at Utah. He played over 1,600 snaps with the Utes, but none came at guard. However, with the Patriots in the market for guard depth to join backups Ben Brown and Caedan Wallace, they are in position to give Lomu a look there.
The Patriots handed former Jet Alijah Vera-Tucker a three-year, $42MM deal in free agency to take over at left guard, but injuries have undermined him throughout his career. He played just 43 of a possible 85 games from 2021-25. In the event he goes down again, Lomu could be an option if he looks capable of handling the role. Unlike Vera-Tucker, durability has not been a problem for right guard Michael Onwenu, who has missed a mere three games in his six-year career. He notched his second straight 17-start season in 2025.
While the 6-foot-6, 313-pound Lomu has gotten some work on the inside, he will initially back up left tackle Will Campbell and RT Morgan Moses. Lomu will be in line to take over for Moses by 2027 if the Patriots part with the soon-to-be 36-year-old next offseason. Moses is under contract through ’27 on a three-year, $24MM pact, but the deal has no guaranteed money left after this season. Releasing or trading Moses then would save $9MM in cap room against just $1.4MM in dead money.
Turning to the backfield, the Patriots added former UCF running back Myles Montgomery as part of their 12-player undrafted class in May. There were no financial details at the time, but it turns out Montgomery signed for the most guarantees ($272,500) of any of the team’s UDFAs, Reiss reports. Rhamondre Stevenson and TreVeyon Henderson are locked in as the Pats’ one-two punch, but Montgomery believes he has a chance to beat out Terrell Jennings, 2025 UDFA Lan Larison and rookie seventh-rounder Jam Miller for the No. 3 job. Montgomery, who clocked in at 4.44 seconds in the 40-yard dash, ran for 1,546 yards and 11 touchdowns on 274 attempts (5.6 YPC) during a 41-game college career divided between UCF and Cincinnati.
In another note on New England’s depth, Mike Brown is the favorite for the No. 3 safety spot behind Kevin Byard and Craig Woodson, Reiss relays. A former Brown and Titan, Brown signed a minimum deal with the Patriots in free agency. The move reunited Brown with Vrabel, who was his coach in Tennessee in 2023. Brown has not factored in much defensively during his four-year career, but he has posted special teams snap shares ranging from 63 percent to 80% in each season.

Titans Place Safeties Kevin Winston, Xavier Woods, Mike Brown On IR
The Titans placed safeties Kevin Winston, Xavier Woods, and Mike Brown on injured reserve on Tuesday, per team writer Jim Wyatt.
All three went down in the Titans’ loss to the 49ers on Sunday and will be out for the rest of the season. Winston and Woods suffered hamstring injuries, while Brown hurt his ankle.
Winston and Woods combined for 16 starts and 839 snaps on defense this year and are the team’s sixth- and eighth-leading tacklers. Winston, a third-round rookie, had emerged as a full-time starter in the second half of the season, while Woods’ role has varied. Their absences will force Tennessee to start a different safety alongside Amani Hooker.
Brown could have fit the bill had he not been injured on Sunday, too. He played special teams almost exclusively this season, but last year, he occupied a 37% defensive snap share with 250 snaps at free safety, per Pro Football Focus (subscription required). This is Brown’s second stint on IR this year; he previously suffered a knee injury in October and missed five games.
Kendell Brooks finished Sunday’s game at safety for the first significant defensive workload of his career. He could be tapped to start with Hooker in the next few weeks. Another option is former Seahawk Jerrick Reed, who has played a handful of defensive snaps in the last three years, but has primarily featured on special teams.
The Titans also added two safeties to their 53-man roster after placing Winston, Woods, and Brown on IR. 2023 sixth-rounder Erick Hallett, who started two games for the Lions amid their safety injuries this year, was signed off Detroit’s practice squad and could see playing time immediately. Tennesee also signed Sanoussi Kane off the Ravens’ practice squad; the 2024 seventh-rounder spent his rookie season as a core special teams contributor in Baltimore but was waived earlier this season in favor of undrafted rookie standout Keondre Jackson.

With the 49ers set to see their starting quarterback return, Martinez’s presence on the 53-man roster is no longer necessary. He’ll likely find his way back to the team’s practice squad.
The Panthers’ two elevations, Barnes and Mukuamu, are direct reflections of injury absences for tomorrow’s game. With Trevin Wallace and Lathan Ransom ruled out for Sunday, Carolina made the decision to call up another player at each position.
Mevis will once again be called upon for kicking duties in Los Angeles. In his NFL debut last week, he was untested in terms of field goal attempts, but he converted all six extra point attempts in a blowout win in San Francisco.
Kamara in Tampa Bay is being called up for the third time this season. If the Buccaneers intend to play him in another game this year, they’ll need to sign him to the 53-man roster, much as the Ravens did after Bryan exhausted all three of his standard gameday practice squad elevations.

Anger is a 13-year veteran who has spent the last four years in Dallas, which included Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors in 2021 and 2023. He will stay with the Cowboys on a two-year deal, per ESPN’s Todd Archer.
Tonyan had a few strong seasons in Green Bay earlier in his career, but he has struggled to produce over the last two years. He spent 2024 in Minnesota, but only played 15 snaps on offense with zero targets. He will add tight end depth in Kansas City.
Stoops received a two-game suspension for violating the NFL’s Performance-Enhancing Substances Policy, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. He will be eligible to participate in training camp and preseason games, but will be sidelined for the first two games of the regular season.
McNichols is staying in Washington on a one-year deal, according to Pelissero. The seven-year veteran appeared in 17 games for the Commanders in 2024 and rushed for 261 yards and four touchdowns on 55 attempts. McNichols will likely continue as Washington’s RB3 behind Brian Robinson and Austin Ekeler.

Evans had been called up from the practice squad three times by the Cowboys, meaning he needed to be added to the 53-man roster this week to continue suiting up. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports “several teams” attempted to poach the veteran off the taxi squad, but his decision to remain with Dallas has culminated in today’s move. Evans has logged 74 combined defensive and special teams snaps with the Cowboys so far, recording three tackles.
James was out of the lineup for one game after being designated for return, but he will be eligible to suit up for the upcoming Super Bowl rematch against the Eagles. Mentioned as a trade candidate earlier this year, he will be able to add depth to a WR corps which has underperformed to date, and add to his single catch recorded in his two Kansas City games at the start of the campaign.

After getting cut by the Steelers earlier this month, Gunner Olszewski quickly caught on with New York’s practice squad. They Giants signed the receiver/returner to the active roster ahead of yesterday’s game against the Jets, and their decision to release him today was merely procedural. As NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero points out, all vested vets who are released following tomorrow’s trade deadline are subject to waivers. The Giants are apparently getting ahead of that deadline with this roster machination. Per Pelissero, Olszewski is expected to re-sign with the Giants and will play in Week 9.

The Chargers officially placed Mike Williams on injured reserve today, opening a roster spot. The front office didn’t take long filling his spot on the depth chart, snagging receiver Simi Fehoko from Pittsburgh’s practice squad. The former fifth-round pick spent the first two seasons of his career with the Cowboys, where he hauled in three catches in 10 games. The Stanford product also had a significant role on special teams during his time in Dallas.
Roy Lopez looked to be entrenched in Houston’s defense for the foreseeable future, with the former sixth-round pick starting 29 of his 33 appearances between 2021 and 2022. However, after collecting only 67 tackles and two sacks across those two seasons, he was waived/injured by the Texans at the end of the preseason. The defensive lineman caught on with Arizona’s practice squad late last week.
