B.J. Daniels

Giants Sign B.J. Daniels, Three Others

The Giants announced the signing of a quartet of players, including quarterback/wide receiver B.J. Daniels. In addition to the versatile Daniels, the Giants confirmed the addition of wide receivers Kadron Boone and Donte Foster as well as defensive end Ishaq Williams (previously reported). To make room, wide receiver Ben Edwards was waived/injured while linebacker James Morris, quarterback Josh Woodrum, and tight end Cedrick Lang were waived. B.J. Daniels (vertical)

Daniels has been with the 49ers, Texans, and Seahawks in the last three years. A former seventh-round draft pick of the Niners, Daniels did not appear in a game until last season, when he played in six for the Seahawks and two for the Texans. His final stat line for the year was one completion off of two passes, six rushing attempts for six yards, two receptions for 18 yards, and five punt returns for 25 yards.

Williams has not seen live football action since 2013 when he was punished at Notre Dame for alleged academic fraud. In his three seasons for the Fighting Irish, Williams played in 35 games and totaled 45 tackles, six tackles for losses, one sack and one forced fumble.

NFC Notes: Ansah, Stafford, Bradford, Giants

Defensive end Ziggy Ansah, who is now under contract through 2017 after the Lions picked up his fifth-year option for 2017, won’t say whether he’s interested in signing a multiyear extension to remain in Detroit long term.

“As of right now, I think you’ve got to take it step by step,” said the standout Lions defender, according to Carlos Monarrez of the Detroit Free Press. “You’ve got to see how this season goes, and I’m just looking forward as far as having a great season for the team.”

In 2016, Ansah will earn a modest $2.94MM salary, but that 2017 option will pay him $12.734MM, so he’s in line for a nice raise eventually, whether or not he inks a long-term deal with the Lions. The former first-round pick, who recorded 14.5 sacks in 2015 on his way to his first Pro Bowl nod, was the league’s 27th-best edge defender out of 110 qualified players, according to Pro Football Focus’ metrics (subscription required).

Minor NFL Transactions: 4/18/16

We’ve rounded up today’s RFA and ERFA tender signings in another post, so we’ll focus on the rest of the minor NFL transactions here…

  • The Rams have agreed to terms with running back Chase Reynolds on a one-year deal, reports Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (Twitter link). Reynolds has never received a carry, but as Thomas notes, he’s a core special-teamer, having played on more than 46% of the Rams’ ST snaps.
  • Another special teams ace, linebacker Lerentee McCray, has signed with the Packers, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com. The 25-year-old McCray had appeared in 24 games over the past two seasons with the Broncos.
  • Washington announced that it has signed offensive lineman Cody Booth, a former undrafted free agent who has spent time with both the Jaguars and Bears. Booth has yet to appear in a regular season NFL game.
  • The Bills announced (via Twitter) that they’ve released defensive back Cam Thomas (not to be confused with the defensive tackle of the same name). This Cam Thomas — a Western Kentucky product — has never appeared in an NFL contest.
  • The Texans released quarterback B.J. Daniels, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle (Twitter link). Daniels, a quarterback at South Florida, made the switch to receiver with the Seahawks before moving back to QB with Houston.

Extra Points: Texans, Browns, Prospects

Some assorted notes from around the NFL and NCAA…

  • B.J. Danielscontract with the Texans is worth $660K over two seasons, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (via Twitter). The quarterback will earn $60K this season and $600K in 2016.
  • Terry Pluto of the Cleveland Plain Dealer expects Browns center Alex Mack to explore free agency this offseason, and the writer believes the veteran will receive some interest from other clubs. Due to the disappointment of first-round pick Cameron Erving, Pluto still thinks Cleveland could spend to keep their Pro Bowl lineman.
  • The Florida Gators will have a number of talented players to replace heading into 2016. Coach Jim McElwain confirmed underclassmen running back Kelvin Taylor, receiver Demarcus Robinson, and defensive end Alex McCalister will all enter the NFL Draft. All this is in addition to cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III, who is expected to be a top-10 pick this offseason.
  • Maryland defensive end Quinton Jefferson has also declared his intentions to enter the NFL Draft, according to the Baltimore Sun. He made the announcement via his Twitter account. He joins his opposite bookend Yannick Ngakoue in leaving the Terrapins early for the pros.

Texans Place T.J. Yates On IR

MONDAY, 5:28pm: The team officially placed Yates on IR and signed quarterback B.J. Daniels off the Seahawks’ practice squad to fill Yates’ roster spot, the Texans website reports. The 26-year-old Daniels has bounced between positions, and between the active roster and practice squad, in Seattle, playing both quarterback and wide receiver. A former seventh-round 49ers draft pick in 2013, Daniels caught two passes for the Seahawks this season.

MONDAY, 12:47pm: Today’s tests confirmed that Yates tore his ACL, ending his season, tweets Adam Schefter of ESPN.com. Houston figures to place him on the injured reserve list this week.

SUNDAY, 2:40pm: The Texans believe that quarterback T.J. Yates suffered a torn ACL during today’s game against the Colts, reports Mark Berman of FOX 26 (Twitter link). If confirmed, Yates would obviously be lost for the remainder of the season.

Yates was starting today in the absence of Brian Hoyer, who suffered a concussion near the end of last week’s game against the Patriots and was inactive today. Houston has now turned to the only other quarterback on its roster, Brandon Weeden, whom the club recently claimed off waivers from the Cowboys. With Hoyer’s status for next week still uncertain, it’s likely that the Texans will look to add a quarterback in the next week.

It’s almost inconceivable given their turnover at quarterback this season (Hoyer, Yates, Weeden, and Ryan Mallett have all seen time this year), but the Texans are still very much in the running for a postseason berth. If they beat the Colts today, Houston will take over first place in the AFC South with just two games to play. Depending on the nature and severity of Hoyer’s concussion, it’s entirely possible we’ll witness a sight few would have predicted at any point in recent history — Weeden starting a playoff game.

Entering today’s contest, Yates had played in three games in relief of Hoyer since being signed in late October — his only start (against the Jets in Week 13) resulted in a 24-17 Houston victory. The 28-year-old Yates, who also spent 2011-12 with the Texans, is a free agent at season’s end. Given his projected recovery timetable, he might find it difficult to land a job next summer.

Minor NFL Transactions: 12/15/15

Tuesday’s minor moves from around the NFL:

  • The Dolphins announced (Twitter link) that they have claimed defensive end Damontre Moore off waivers from the Giants. To make room, center/guard Jacques McClendon has been waived.
  • The Bengals are expected to promote practice squad quarterback Keith Wenning to the 53-man roster as a backup to A.J. McCarron, per Paul Dehner Jr. of the Cincinnati Enquirer (on Twitter).
  • The Bears announced (via Twitter) that they have promoted rookie linebacker John Timu from the taxi squad while waiving veteran defensive lineman Ziggy Hood.
  • The Seahawks waived receiver B.J. Daniels and safety Akeem Davis while activating linebacker Brock Coyle from IR, Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times writes.
  • Adrian Phillips will be promoted off of the Chargers‘ practice squad and on to the 53-man roster, Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego writes.
  • The Saints waived veteran defensive end Phillip Hunt on Tuesday, as Evan Woodbery of the Times-Picayune writes.
  • The Raiders have signed long snapper Thomas Gafford, according to Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle (on Twitter). In a related move, long snapper Jon Condo has been placed on IR.
  • The Bengals (on Twitter) announced that they have waived linebacker Chris Carter.
  • Tight end Chase Coffman has re-signed with the Seahawks, a source tells Rand Getlin of NFL.com (on Twitter).
  • Washington announced the signing of veteran tight end Alex Smith (not to be confused with the quarterback of the same name). Smith, 33, is an 11-year veteran who has had previous stints in the NFL with the Bucs, Pats, Eagles, Browns, and Saints. In other roster moves Tuesday, the team waived safety Trenton Robinson from IR with an injury settlement.
  • The Cowboys have released cornerback Tyler Patmon, according to a source who spoke with Charean Williams of The Star-Telegram (on Twitter). Terrance Mitchell will now be called up from the taxi squad and given an opportunity to play at nickel.
  • The Rams waived kicker Zach Hocker and signed defensive tackle Louis Trinca-Pasat from the taxi squad, Howard Balzer of USA Today tweets.

Minor NFL Transactions: 11/24/15

Tuesday’s minor signings and cuts from around the NFL:

  • The Seahawks are bringing back running back Bryce Brown, a source tells Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports (Twitter links). Brown will give Seattle additional depth at the position given Marshawn Lynch‘s uncertain status. Head coach Pete Carroll indicated that Lynch was unlikely to go this week, so Brown’s return is not an indication of whether Lynch will undergo surgery.
  • The Seahawks also signed wide receiver B.J. Daniels to the active roster, as Brady Henderson of ESPN Seattle tweets.
  • The Raiders cut linebacker Ray-Ray Armstrong, a source tells Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). Armstrong got in hot water earlier this month for taunting a police dog in Pittsburgh.
  • The Eagles signed wide receiver Jonathan Krause from the practice squad and released linebacker Emmanuel Acho, as Geoff Mosher of CSNPhilly.com tweets.
  • The Jets announced that they have signed outside linebacker Josh Martin off the Colts‘ practice squad to their active roster. Martin got his start as a UDFA with Kansas City in 2013 before moving on to the Bucs this season. After he was waived/injured by Tampa Bay, the Colts scooped him up soon after. For his career Martin has played in 21 games (one start) with a half-sack, a forced fumble and 28 tackles, all with the Chiefs.
  • The Dolphins have waived cornerback Zackary Bowman, as Omar Kelly of the Sun-Sentinel tweets.
  • The Seahawks have waived defensive lineman A.J. Francis, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times tweets.

Seahawks Sign Bryce Brown

The Seahawks have signed running back Bryce Brown, as Adam Caplan of ESPN.com tweets. To make room, Seattle has waived quarterback/wide receiver B.J. Daniels.

Brown, 24, has showed flashes of promise in the past, but he was bounced by the Bills late in the offseason and it took him until today to find a new home. The Bills traded a 2015 fourth-round pick to the Eagles to acquire Brown before the start of last season and that’s a deal that GM Doug Whaley probably wouldn’t make again. In 2014, Brown ran for a whopping 126 yards off of 36 carries. Since getting cut loose by Buffalo, Brown has worked out for the Titans, Chiefs, Lions, Colts, Jets, and Patriots. However, he’ll be making his home with Seattle.

Brown, a seventh-round pick out of Kansas State in 2012, rushed for a career-best 564 yards and 4 touchdowns as a rookie with the Eagles, averaging 4.9 yards per attempt. He’ll be expected to provide the Seahawks with depth while Thomas Rawls deals with a calf contusion.
