Nichols began the year on the reserve/PUP list. The eight-year veteran has been hampered by injuries since signing with the Cardinals in 2024. After playing just six games last year, Nichols’ 2025 campaign will end after only four appearances.

Bryant makes his return to the Texans’ offense to replenish a thinned out tight ends group, while in Seattle, the Seahawks place their second-round rookie tight end, Arroyo, on injured reserve with a knee injury.

In Buffalo, this will be Jackson’s third and final standard gameday practice squad elevation. If the team wants to see him in another game this season, they’ll need to sign him to the 53-man roster. The same is true for Strong in Green Bay, Jackson and Mafi in Las Vegas, Smyth in New Orleans, Sam in Philadelphia, and Jones in Seattle.

On the flip side of that, in Denver, Turner has been signed to the 53-man roster after running out of elevations last week.

Thomas suffered a shoulder injury in Week 14 and it will end his season. The third-round rookie confirmed on social media today he is set to undergo surgery in the near future. Thomas made five starts in 2025, totaling 22 tackles and seven pass deflections.

Giants punter Jamie Gillan is dealing with an injury, so they brought in several punters to try out on Tuesday. Johnston emerged as the best of the group and will be on hand for punting duties in Week 15 if Gillan is not healthy enough to play.

Johnston’s injuries have seemingly led to him looking for a new team yet again, assuming he clears waivers. The veteran punter signed with Pittsburgh last year, following two three-year stints in Philadelphia and Houston. In his first game as a Steeler, though, Johnston suffered a season-ending knee injury on his kicking leg. He’d been given a chance to win the job back from Corliss Waitman, who had filled in during his absence, but lost the job and a spot on the team’s initial 53-man roster.

Rebounding quickly, Johnston signed with the Bills after they made a quick decision to move on from Brad Robbins following their season opener. Johnston got through three games with his new team before suffered an injury on his planting foot that would lead him to injured reserve. Now, the veteran heads to the waiver wire before he’ll have the ability to shop himself out for new opportunities.

Bills Sign P Mitch Wishnowsky, Place P Cameron Johnston On IR

The Bills finished their Week 4 game without their usual kicker and punter. Cameron Johnston joined Tyler Bass as injured specialists in Buffalo, with NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport indicating the punter would miss time with a leg injury.

As a result, the Bills will add former 49ers staple Mitch Wishnowsky, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Wishnowsky is joining Buffalo’s 53-man roster. Rather than carry two punters on the active roster, Buffalo is placing Johnston on IR, per Schefter. The 33-year-old will now miss at least four games after suffering an injury on a roughing the punter penalty in a win over the Saints last Sunday.

Wishnowsky, also 33, is already the third punter the Bills have employed this season. Interestingly, he joins Johnston as the second Australian the Bills have used at the position this year.

The Bills began 2025 with Brad Robbins as their punter, but they cut him loose after he averaged 39.5 yards per boot (38.0 net) in a win over the Ravens in Week 1. Johnston, a former Eagle, Texan, and Steeler, averaged 44.0 yards with a nearly identical 37.9 net in two games before landing on IR.

A 49er from 2019-24, Wishnowsky carries a career average of 45.6 yards per punt and 40.7 net. He played in just nine games last year before going on IR with a season-ending back injury in mid-November. Wishnowsky began this season on the Commanders’ practice squad, but they released him on Sept. 13. He’ll now get an opportunity to give the undefeated Bills something they haven’t found in 2025 — a solution at punter.

Bills Sign P Cameron Johnston

The Bills are quickly pivoting to a new punter. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the team is signing veteran punter Cameron Johnston. In a corresponding move, the team has waived Brad Robbins.

Johnston, who shouldn’t be confused with Bill Burr, has found a job with his fourth NFL squad for his ninth NFL season. He had separate three-year stints punting for the Eagles and Texans, averaging 47.3 yards per punt and 42.2 net yards per punt. The veteran inked a three-year deal with the Steelers last offseason but suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 1. He had an opportunity to reclaim his role during this year’s preseason, but he was cut after losing out on the gig to Corliss Waitman.

Now, he’ll look to revive his career in Buffalo. With Sam Martin departing for the Panthers, the Bills initially landed on Robbins as their new punter. The 26-year-old got four looks during the season opener, averaging 39.5 yards and 38 net yards on his punts. The Bills apparently had no interest in seeing if he could improve on those averages, as the team is already turning to their second punter of the 2025 campaign.

According to Howard Balzer, Johnston was one of three punters to get a look from Buffalo. Matthew Hayball and Ryan Stonehouse also auditioned for the team today.

In other special teams news, the Bills have signed kicker Matt Prater to the active roster. The veteran was a standard practice squad elevation for the season opener, a game in which he converted a dramatic game-winning field goal. With Tyler Bass landing on IR last week and being forced off the field for at least four games, Prater will have a secure spot on the 53-man roster for the time being.

Steelers Cut P Cameron Johnston, 12 Others

The Steelers started moving on from some players late last week, and they continued the process this afternoon. The team announced the following transactions:

Cameron Johnston inked a three-year deal with the Steelers last offseason and was expected to lead the depth chart for the foreseeable future. However, the veteran suffered a knee injury in Week 1 that knocked him out for the rest of the season, allowing Corliss Waitman to secure the punting gig. It appears that Waitman won the competition between the two this preseason, and Johnston will now look to revive his career elsewhere. The team also moved on from kicker Ben Sauls, who always seemed destined to be cut considering Chris Boswell is still kicking around.

Among the team’s other notable cuts are Max Hurleman, who caught a touchdown in Pittsburgh’s preseason opener and was a standout during training camp, and linebackerMark Robinson, who was believed to be competing for a spot on the Steelers defense.

Not long after being a 49ers cut as the NFC champions pared set their initial 53-man roster, Parker secured another opportunity. The 49ers carried Parker on their roster this offseason and brought him back shortly after releasing him. A 33-game starter with the Raiders, Parker joins a Falcons roster housing Storm Norton as the swingman behind Jake Matthews and Kaleb McGary.

Isaac went to camp with the Bucs but caught on with the Panthers, via their barrage of waiver claims, after being waived. The Panthers waived Isaac before their Week 1 game. Isaac initially signed with the Bucs as a 2023 UDFA and played in two games last season.

Hatten incurred a five-game suspension today. A Seahawks UDFA this year, Hatten did not make the team’s 53-man roster. At the same time, the NFL lifted the suspensions of the other three free agents, Jackson, Muhammad, and Thomas.

Steelers P Cameron Johnston Suffers Season-Ending Knee Injury

SEPTEMBER 9: Johnston is indeed out for the year, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports. The Steelers will spend the coming days searching out replacement options for the remainder of the campaign as a result. Pittsburgh currently has roughly $16.3MM in cap space.

SEPTEMBER 8: After three years with punter Pressley Harvin III, the Steelers made the decision to move on with a new punter in 2024, signing former Texans leg Cameron Johnston. Unfortunately, it looks like they will be forced to find another solution to their punting game as Johnston has suffered what head coach Mike Tomlin called a “serious injury,” per ESPN’s Brooke Pryor.

On a punt in the fourth quarter of today’s win over the Falcons, Johnston’s kicking leg was hurt when a Falcons defender fell into it after Johnston landed following the kick. When the defender made contact, the knee appeared to pop, and Johnston collapsed to the turf in what looked to be a significant amount of pain. Johnston limped off the field after the trainers took a look, inspiring some hope, but he was later carted off the sideline into the locker room before the end of the contest.

Needing one more punt before the game came to a close, the Steelers turned to kicker Chris Boswell, who delivered a 43-yard punt. The responsibility isn’t a completely unfamiliar one to Boswell, who kicked field goals and punts during his time at Rice in college. He punted 15 times for the Owls with an average of 40.3 yards per punt. It doesn’t seem to be sustainable to rely on Boswell to perform both roles on special teams moving forward, though, so expect Pittsburgh to seek another solution while Johnston is out.

One such solution, though perhaps an unpopular one in Pittsburgh, could be to bring Harvin back. After being released by the Steelers, Harvin signed with the 49ers but was waived before the season began. Now, Harvin would be available to return for another stint, if invited. Over the past two seasons, Harvin averaged 43.83 yards per punt, placing the Steelers at 32nd in the league in that statistic, but with today’s injury, Pittsburgh may not have much of a choice. Johnston will undergo an MRI soon to determine his prognosis and the Steelers course of action.

Texans Activate T Tytus Howard, P Cameron Johnston

After designating the two players to return from injured reserve this week, the Texans have announced that they have officially activated offensive tackle Tytus Howard and punter Cameron Johnston from IR. After starting the regular season on the injured list, both players are reportedly ready to make their 2023 debut.

Howard missed the first four games of the season due to a training camp hand injury that required surgery to fix breaks in two places. He’s been a full-time starter for Houston since getting drafted in the first round in 2019, missing games here and there due to various injuries. To date, he’s started in 54 of a possible 70 games. He’ll look to step in for George Fant across from Laremy Tunsil this week.

Johnston likewise has missed time due to a preseason injury after pulling a calf muscle in late-August. Ty Zentner, an undrafted rookie out of Kansas State, had been fulfilling the punting duties in Johnston’s absence before being waived early in the week.

Additionally, the Texans announced that they have released defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth from their practice squad. The move was necessary after the team released defensive end Derek Rivers from the active roster yesterday and signed him to the practice squad.

Finally, with this weekend’s contest in Atlanta coming up, the team announced that they will be calling up cornerback D’Angelo Ross and linebacker Garret Wallow as standard gameday elevations from the practice squad for tomorrow. Ross will be seeing his first action since making an appearance in the 2021-22 playoffs for the Patriots. This will also be Wallow’s first game of the season, as well, after starting five games over his first two years in the league.
