Former Dolphins offensive lineman Sam Young will work out for the Bills on Monday, a source tells Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). With offensive tackle LaAdrian Waddle likely done for the season, Young could be a great fit for Buffalo.
The Bills – or at least, the remaining people that were around from 2011-2013 – are already familiar with Young, who made 20 appearances for the team. Since then, he’s spent time with the Jaguars and Dolphins.
The Jets met with free agent tackle Sam Young, according to Mike Florio of PFT. Young could be a depth option for the Jets after the Brent Qvale was carted off the field on Sunday. 
Young, 32, spent three years with the Dolphins under coach Adam Gase. His history with the new Jets head coach could lead to a deal and an easy-in for making the 53-man roster.
Over ten years, Young has 88 career regular season appearances, including 21 starts. Before his three-year stretch with the Fins, he appeared in games for the Cowboys, Bills, and Jaguars.
Although the Saints only had one pick in the first three rounds of last week’s draft, they used it on an offensive lineman, Erik McCoy. The team is still exploring veteran front-five depth, however.
The Saints will audition both Sam Young and Ulrick John, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle and Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk report (Twitter links). John’s workout is slated for May 10, when New Orleans will hold its rookie minicamp.
While Derek Newton is the most experienced Saints backup offensive lineman, he has played in one game since October 2016 due to the two patellar tendon tears he suffered in his Texans finale. Michael Ola also resides on New Orleans’ roster.
Young, 31, served as a swing option for the Dolphins the past three years. The 6-foot-8 tackle started eight games in that span and was a nine-game starter in Jacksonville between the 2014 and ’15 seasons. Also a tackle, John has not played since the 2017 season and has not seen action with the same franchise in consecutive years. His most relevant NFL work came in three starts for the 2016 Cardinals.
Additionally, the Saints will work out former Lions and Bears fullback Michael Burton, Herbie Teope of NFL.com tweets. That audition will also take place at next weekend’s rookie camp. Like Young and John, Burton is a former Day 3 pick. He played four seasons combined with the NFC North franchises. Burton played just 49 snaps last season in Chicago but graded out well, per Pro Football Focus.
Shortly after his release, Sam Young is back with the Dolphins. Miami made the decision to re-sign the veteran tackle on Monday, Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com tweets.
Miami waived safety Maurice Smith to make room on the roster, per Wolfe. Young was in Smith’s shoes on Saturday but has a roster spot again.
Young serves as offensive line depth for the Dolphins behind Laremy Tunsil and Ja’Wuan James. The Dolphins only had seven healthy linemen available Sunday, with center Wesley Johnson and tackle Zach Sterup in place behind the starters. Young adds a proven swing man to that contingent.
The 31-year-old blocker saw a more prominent role with the 2017 Dolphins, who deployed him as a starter in six games. He played in 10 last season and eight in 2016. Prior to being a free agent Sunday, Young had suited up in the previous five Dolphins games this season.
Sam Young struggled last weekend, and it sounds like his performance has cost him his job. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports (via Twitter) that the Dolphins have released the offensive tackle. The team has promoted defensive tackle Jamiyus Pittman from the practice squad to take the open roster spot (via Jackson).
Following stints with the Cowboys, Bills, and Jaguars, Young joined the Dolphins back in 2016. The 31-year-old started seven of his 23 games over the span, including a 2017 campaign where he started a career-high six games. His role had been reduced this season, but he was inserted into last weekend’s game after Laremy Tunsil suffered a concussion. The Dolphins were beating the Bengals 17-0 when Young entered the game, but they ended up surrendering 27 unanswered points to lose the game. After Young was inserted into the lineup, quarterback Ryan Tannehill had a pair of turnovers that turned into touchdowns.
Tunsil has passed the league’s concussion protocol and is expected to play against the Bears tomorrow. Today’s move means Zach Sterup is now the lone backup offensive tackle behind Tunsil and Ja’Wuan James. The team also has lineman Wesley Johnson sitting on the bench, although the veteran has primarily played center and guard throughout his career.
Pittman joined the Dolphins after going undrafted out of UCF. The 6-foot-2 defensive lineman had a standout senior campaign, compiling 47 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Pittman will slide behind defensive tackles Davon Godchaux, Akeem Spence, and Vincent Taylor on the depth chart.

The Dolphins have re-signed offensive tackle Sam Young to a one-year deal, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk (Twitter link).
Young, 30, has been in the NFL since 2010 and has spent time with the Cowboys, Bills, and Jaguars in addition to the Dolphins. In 2017, Young tied a career-high with six starts and played on nearly 70% of Miami’s offensive snaps. The results were middling, as Pro Football Focus graded Young as the league’s No. 48 tackle among 81 qualifiers.
The Dolphins are already set at tackle with Laremy Tunsil and Ja’Wuan James on the left and right sides, respectively, so Young will return as a clear reserve. Other backup tackles on the Miami roster include Zach Sterup, Eric Smith, and Sean Hickey.
Free agent cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie says he’s in no rush to make a decision in free agency. Right now, he’s hoping to make a decision “in April sometime” (Twitter link via ESPN.com’s Josina Anderson).
Rodgers-Cromartie visited with the Redskins and had a meeting scheduled with the Saints, but it seems that New Orleans lost interest after signing fellow corner Patrick Robinson. The Redskins could still use an addition to their cornerback group, but it’s possible that their offer was not to DRC’s liking. Or, perhaps no offer was made.
Before he was released by the Giants, DRC reportedly agreed to play safety in 2018. That could be a solution for him if his market continues to stall.

The Dolphins may be trying to see if they can unload Ja’Wuan James prior to his fifth-year option becoming guaranteed. A cut candidate, James is set to make $9.34MM on an as-of-now guaranteed-against-injury fifth-year option — which becomes fully guaranteed at 3pm CT Wednesday. Omar Kelly of the Orlando Sentinel reports the Dolphins are shopping the fifth-year right tackle, with the goal appearing to be moving him before free agency and the option vesting. While that is a high salary for a player who hasn’t been especially consistent, and has been injury-prone, plenty of teams are in need of tackle help. Additionally, the Dolphins are planning to re-sign swing tackle Sam Young, Kelly reports. Young, who will turn 31 in June, started six games for Miami last season. He’s a much cheaper option than James, albeit one with a lower ceiling.
