49ers LT Joe Staley Close To Returning?

The 49ers may get Joe Staley back sooner than expected. The left tackle broke his left fibula back in week 2, though he participated in individual drills on Wednesday and he could make his return against the Panthers this week, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports relays.

“I think these next two days are big and we’ll see how he feels on Wednesday,” coach Kyle Shanahan said on Monday. “I do think there’s an outside chance, but hopefully we can get him out on the practice field a little bit this week to where if he feels good and everything then he can go.

“But if not, at least he gets a little bit of work in because it’s going to be hard to get a real practice in the following week because of the Thursday night game versus Arizona.”

San Francisco hasn’t missed a beat since Staley went down. The team is 6-0, including 4-0 in games where Staley hasn’t started.

49ers Also Pursued Mohamed Sanu

Some key wide receiver dominoes fell Tuesday, and the 49ers were involved in both. Prior to acquiring Emmanuel Sanders from the Broncos, the 49ers were “heavily” in on Mohamed Sanu, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic (subscription required).

The Patriots ended up outbidding the 49ers for the Falcon wideout, sending a second-round pick to Atlanta. San Francisco already unloaded its 2020 second-rounder, sending it to Kansas City for Dee Ford in March. Sanu is 30 and signed through 2020; Sanders is 32 and in a contract year.

While Sanders has accomplished more than Sanu, it’s understandable why the 49ers pursued the latter. Sanu’s first Atlanta season came when Kyle Shanahan was running a historically great Falcons offense, which led the team to Super Bowl LI. The third-year 49ers HC was seeking a “big-bodied” wideout in the offseason, per Barrows. Sanu would have filled that role better than Sanders, who ended up costing the 49ers 2020 third- and fourth-round picks.

San Francisco is now without second-, third- and fourth-round picks in next year’s draft. But the 49ers exited Week 7 with their leading wide receiver (Marquise Goodwin) having totaled 181 receiving yards. Sanders, who has 367, should be able to assimilate quickly after playing in ex-49er OC Rich Scangarello‘s offense.

Broncos Trade Emmanuel Sanders To 49ers

The Broncos have traded wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders to the 49ers, according to Mike Klis of 9News (on Twitter). The deal will send Sanders and a 2020 fifth-round pick to the Niners with 2020 third- and fourth-round picks going to Denver, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets

The trade talk around Sanders has been percolating for some time. The Niners, meanwhile, have been on the hunt for a game-changing wide receiver. Mohamed Sanu, one of the top available WRs leading up to the trade deadline, was snagged by the Patriots in a Tuesday morning trade. Instead, the 49ers pivoted to Sanders, who offers a lengthy playmaking resume.

Through seven games, Sanders has 30 catches for 367 yards and two touchdowns. While those aren’t bad numbers, he’ll aim to get back towards his old form. Last year, Sanders managed 71 catches for 868 yards and four touchdowns in just 12 games. In 2014, his first season with the Broncos, he set career highs of 101 grabs for 1,404 yards and nine TDs. Sanders’ best ball might be behind him, but he’s still plenty dangerous, the potential is there for him to be a difference-maker as one of Jimmy Garoppolo‘s top targets.

In this deal, the Broncos managed to acquire draft capital while giving up a 32-year-old player in the final year of his deal. It was a solid move for GM John Elway, who likely isn’t done working the phones. There’s still a week to go before the trade deadline and the Broncos are clearly willing to sell after their loss to the Patrick Mahomes-less Chiefs. At this point, all eyes are on cornerback Chris Harris Jr. Elway has implied that Harris, Von Miller, and Derek Wolfe are staying put, but he said roughly the same thing about all of the team’s big “names” just days ago, and that group certainly included Sanders.

Outside of tight end George Kittle, the Niners were lacking proven receiving talents. In fact, none of the 49ers wide receivers have eclipsed the 200-yard mark or scored more than one touchdown this season. Sanders knows a thing or two about finding the end zone, however – he’s scored 39 career touchdowns for the Steelers and Broncos across his NFL career. If Sanders can produce – and mentor Dante Pettis and Deebo Samuel – he’ll be well worth the price. The Niners will be in even better shape if Trent Taylor returns to action later this year.

Sanu and Sanders are spoken for, but A.J. Green (Bengals), Taylor Gabriel (Bears), and DeVante Parker (Dolphins) are still available for trade between now and Tuesday buzzer.

49ers To Pursue Trade For WR

The 49ers, who have raced out to a 5-0 start, are one of the league’s more surprising stories through the first six weeks of the regular season. But, with the Seahawks (5-1) also looking like a championship contender, and with the defending NFC champion Rams (3-3) still looming as a real threat, San Francisco has a long way to go to clinch its first division title since 2012.

To that end, the club is aggressively pursuing a trade for a wide receiver in advance of the October 29 deadline, as Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reports. It does not sound as though the 49ers are going to make a deal for an offensive tackle, but the front office and head coach Kyle Shanahan believe an upgrade at WR is needed.

Indeed, there are not many proven receiving threats on the roster behind tight end George Kittle, and no wide receiver has 200 yards or more than one TD as of yet. Young talents like Dante Pettis and Deebo Samuel have plenty of promise, of course, and the Niners may get Trent Taylor back later this season, but a veteran wideout would certainly be a welcome addition.

La Canfora says the 49ers are one of the many teams interested in Bengals star A.J. Green, but Green’s health concerns and Cincinnati’s reluctance to talk shop could be obstacles to a deal. The Falcons are reeling and could look to move Mohamed Sanu, and the Bears may be willing to deal Taylor Gabriel, who has not been a focal point of Chicago’s offense (his Week 3 performance notwithstanding). The Broncos’ Emmanuel Sanders is also a popular name on the trade market this year, and La Canfora’s sources say the Dolphins’ DeVante Parker could be a fallback option for San Francisco.

Sanu and Gabriel both played for Shanahan in Atlanta, so he is plenty familiar with what they have to offer. But in any event, it appears that the Niners, who have been one of the more aggressive teams in pursuing trades over the past couple of years, will do everything in their power to upgrade their wide receiver depth chart.
