Titans Release QB Austin Davis, WR Nick Williams
The Titans shuffled their offensive depth chart today. The team announced that they’ve released wide receiver Nick Williams and quarterback Austin Davis. Linebacker Robert Spillane has been promoted from the practice squad to take the open roster spot.
After being released by the Titans in early September, Williams rejoined the organization later that month. The 27-year-old proceeded to appear in a pair of games for Tennessee, returning four punts for 47 yards. He got some action on offense during Sunday’s loss to the Bills, dropping a pass that likely would have resulted in a touchdown.
The former undrafted free agent out of Connecticut has managed to stick around the NFL since 2013, and he hauled in 17 receptions for 159 yards and two touchdowns with the Falcons in 2015. The move leaves the Titans with only four wideouts on the active roster, and cornerback Adoree’ Jackson will likely resume his role as the primary punt returner.
Davis was brought in last month after backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert was placed into the concussion protocol. The 29-year-old didn’t end up seeing the field during his brief tenure in Tennessee. Davis’ only extended run as a starting quarterback came with the Rams in 2014, when he completed 63.4-percent of his passes for 2,001 yards, 12 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. The move leaves the Titans with only a pair of quarterbacks in Gabbert and starter Marcus Mariota.
Spillane, an undrafted free agent out of Western Michigan, had spent the first five weeks on the Titans practice squad. He led the team with 25 tackles during the preseason.

Rishard Matthews Hires Drew Rosenhaus
Free agent wide receiver Rishard Matthews hired Drew Rosenhaus to help him find a new team, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. Until now, the former Titan was serving as his own representative.
After Matthews requested his release from the Titans, there may be a perception that he quit on his team, so it behooves him to partner with a power agent such as Rosenhaus. Rosenhaus claims that multiple teams are showing interest in his client and he says a deal could be just around the corner.
“I’ve been the leading receiver for two years,” Matthews said of the Titans. “Then all of a sudden I’m barely playing and not even starting. Using my injury as the scapegoat. Look at number of snaps and targets.”
It has been speculated that receiver-needy teams like the Cowboys, Patriots, Bills, Seahawks, and Cardinals would be logical destinations for Matthews. The Bills may be his most likely landing spot due to his relationship with Bills wide receivers coach Terry Robiskie, but it’s not clear whether they’re in the mix at this time.
Matthews recorded 945 receiving yards in his first year with Tennessee and had nearly 800 yards last season. In three games this year, however, Matthews had just three catches off of six targets.

Raiders To Place Donald Penn On IR
Donald Penn suffered a groin injury in the Raiders’ overtime win over the Browns and will head to IR as a result, Ian Rapoport and MJ Acosta of NFL.com report (on Twitter).
The team does not view this as a season-ending malady, Rapoport adds, and Jon Gruden confirmed as such. Penn would be able to return in eight weeks.
The Raiders are turning to another team’s practice squad to replace Penn on the roster. They’re signing tackle Ian Silberman off the Titans’ practice squad, Paul Gutierrez of ESPN.com reports. Silberman went to the past two Raiders training camps and started at right tackle during part of the preseason. He made the team out of camp but was waived before Week 1.
Second-round pick Brandon Parker will start at right tackle on Sunday, according to The Athletic’s Vic Tafur (on Twitter), giving Oakland two rookie tackle starters flanking three proven veterans inside. Parker’s played 57 snaps this season. Penn has logged 188 at his new position, but, at least in the view of Pro Football Focus, the transition from left to right tackle has not gone well. Penn’s graded as the league’s worst full-time tackle, per PFF.
Nevertheless, the Raiders hope he can be an IR-return candidate. Penn’s profile would suggest as much. This has been another interesting year for the veteran blocker. He was the subject of trade rumors coming into the season, and the 35-year-old tackle was moved off the left side — where Kolton Miller now resides — for the first time in his 11-year NFL career. This occurred despite Penn making the past two Pro Bowls.
This injury will represent the most time Penn has missed as an NFLer as well. Prior to last season, when he played 14 games, Penn had suited up for every game of his career.
