Redskins Rumors: Peterson, Galette, Cap

Neither Daniel Snyder nor Redskins president Bruce Allen knew about the team’s decision to bring Adrian Peterson in for a workout. Instead, VP of player personnel Doug Williams and football operations president Eric Shaffer moved forward with the audition that quickly led to Peterson signing and then reclaiming an NFL starting gig.

(Shaffer) looked and me and said, ‘Well, what do you think, what do we got to lose?’” Williams said during a radio interview with the Team 980’s Doc Walker (via the Washington Post). “I’m a little hesitant to pull the plug, and then before I went out to practice I looked at Eric and said, ‘Hey Eric, what the heck? Let’s do it.’

The thing about that, I came to practice, I was so hyped about it that I forgot to tell Bruce that we was bringing him in. I’m sitting there that evening and Bruce came in my office and he just stood there looking at me. I’m thinking, ‘What’d I do?’ Well, Dan had called him and let him know he didn’t know. And Bruce let me know that he didn’t know because Dan didn’t know. I said, ‘Well look, that’s on me.’ I took it. Sometimes you have to have big shoulders, you take it and you move on.”

Williams arranged the workout for Monday, at a time when the Redskins were searching for available backs, and Peterson signed for the veteran minimum later that day. Peterson is thriving with Washington, his fourth NFL team; his 236 yards are fourth among players who’ve played just three games. He scored twice and rushed for a season-high 120 yards (6.3 per carry) in the Redskins’ 31-17 Week 3 win over the Packers.

Here’s the latest out of the nation’s capital:

  • Unless the Redskins see a member of their edge-rushing contingent suffer a setback, don’t look for them to bring back Junior Galette. Redskins brass is comfortable with its quartet of Ryan Kerrigan, Pernell McPhee, Preston Smith and Ryan AndersonRich Tandler of NBC Sports Washington notes. Galette’s expressed regret he turned down a Washington offer, for what the veteran pass rusher says was for two years and $10MM, this offseason. The Redskins informed him during free agency they were moving in a different direction. A Rams visit also did not produce a deal. After two season-nullifying injuries, Galette played in 16 Washington games last season and recorded three sacks. Of the aforementioned incumbents, only Anderson has a sack this season.
  • Washington would like this season to be a redshirt campaign for third-round pick Geron Christian. Jay Gruden said this week (per Tandler) he would like the rookie offensive linemen to learn this season. Christian has not been active on a game day yet, and the Redskins’ offensive line hasn’t encountered the injury trouble it did in 2017.
  • Although Washington has not made Caleb Brantley part of any of its 46-man Sunday rosters, the team views the young defensive lineman as a rotational piece down the line, Tandler adds. The Browns waived Brantley after one season. He played in 12 games as a rookie, starting one, and registered two sacks and a fumble recovery. Washington’s receiving strong play from its defensive line thus far, making opportunities for the second-year newcomer scarce.
  • One of the ways Washington can increase its cap space next year (projected total of $25MM) would be by cutting Josh Norman. While that line of thinking surfaced over the summer, Tandler writes it may behoove the team to keep its top corner in the fold for another season. A Norman release would save Washington $8.5MM but also stick the franchise with $6MM in dead money. Washington ranks second in total defense thus far and moved on from Kendall Fuller and Bashaud Breeland this offseason. Norman’s working with Quinton Dunbar and Fabian Moreau now.

Redskins Cut WR Breshad Perriman

Breshad Perriman‘s stint in Washington has already come to an end. ProFootballTalk.com reports (via Twitter) that the Redskins have released the wide receiver. According to PFT, the organization “indicated it could bring him back in the future.” Meanwhile, ESPN’s John Keim tweets that the team will be promoting running back Kapri Bibbs from the practice squad to take the open roster spot.

The Ravens finally bailed on the 2015 first-rounder out of Central Florida in early September. After sitting out his entire rookie campaign due to injury, Perriman went on to have a pair of underwhelming seasons in Baltimore. He showed a bit of promise in 2016, hauling in 33 catches for 499 yards and three scores. However, he seemingly took a step back in 2017, catching only 10 passes for 77 yards.

The Redskins ended up signing the 25-year-old earlier this week, but they also added fellow wideout Michael Floyd on the same day. Following today’s move, the team has five healthy receivers on their active roster: Floyd, Josh Doctson, Jamison CrowderPaul Richardson, and Brian Quick (Maurice Harris missed last week due to a concussion).

Bibbs joined the Redskins practice squad last November, and he ended up compiling 79 rushing yards on 21 carries in three games (he also added another 14 receptions for 128 yards). He was cut at the end of the preseason but once again caught on with the practice squad. With Rob Kelley joining Derrius Guice and Byron Marshall on the team’s injured reserve list, the Redskins were only rostering three running backs in Adrian Peterson, Chris Thompson, and Samaje Perine. Bibbs will likely slide behind that trio on the depth chart, and he could play a role on special teams (seven career kick returns).

Redskins Place Rob Kelley On IR

Another Redskins running back will head to IR. Rob Kelley will join Derrius Guice and Byron Marshall on the team’s injured reserve list, with a toe injury set to shelve the third-year back for at least two months, John Keim of ESPN.com tweets.

Kelley was set to miss around a month of action because of this malady, per Jay Gruden (via Keim, on Twitter), and the Redskins decided to save a roster spot. Kelley, whom Gruden said might need surgery, will not be eligible to return to action for eight weeks.

Samaje Perine will now be Washington’s third active running back on game day, Keim adds, joining Chris Thompson and the resurgent Adrian Peterson. Kelley and Perine were set to be Washington’s top two backs, but Peterson’s August workout changed those plans. Kelley has received just four carries this season, gaining eight yards.

As a rookie, Kelley broke out and became the leading rusher for the playoff-contending Redskins. He amassed 704 rushing yards and six touchdowns. He was not as prominent of a backfield fixture last season, though, and saw the late-arriving Peterson usurp his potential 2018 role.

Redskins To Add Michael Floyd

The Monday workout that led to Breshad Perriman earning a Redskins contract also produced another offer, and Michael Floyd will be another new wideout coming to Washington full-time.

Floyd will sign with the Redskins, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport (on Twitter), and join Perriman in adding to the team’s fluid receiving corps.

Perriman, Floyd and Kendall Wright were among the notable receivers to audition for Washington on Monday morning. Floyd, who has three 800-plus-yard receiving seasons on his resume, will follow Perriman as a likely depth piece for the reeling Redskins.

Washington placed rookies Cam Sims and Trey Quinn on IR, along with second-year man Robert Davis. And Paul Richardson entered Week 2 with a questionable designation because of a shoulder injury.

Floyd was most recently with the Saints, who signed him late in the offseason and cut him after the preseason slate. He has not played a regular role on a team since the Cardinals cut him in 2016 after an off-field incident. The former first-round pick did post three 800-plus-yard seasons, but those came from 2013-15. He caught 10 passes for 78 yards with the Vikings last season.

Redskins Work Out Paxton Lynch, WRs

While Breshad Perriman‘s Monday workout was enough to land him a Redskins contract, the team brought in several notable free agents for visits as it begins Week 3 preparations.

Paxton Lynch‘s workout tour continued with a trip to Washington, and Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets Kendall Wright and Michael Floyd were also part of the contingent to audition for the Redskins.

The Redskins mark the fourth team Lynch has auditioned for, following the Bills, Lions and Eagles. Washington is carrying just two quarterbacks — Alex Smith and Colt McCoy — on its active roster and doesn’t have any on its practice squad. Lynch still has P-squad eligibility. The 24-year-old quarterback could not come close to justifying his draft status in Denver, but other teams continue to kick the tires on the once-highly regarded prospect.

Wright and Floyd saw the Vikings and Saints, respectively, deem them preseason cuts. While it’s been a bit since Floyd had a steady gig, Wright led the Bears in receiving last season. Washington signed Perriman on Monday afternoon, making him its latest wideout addition this season.

Redskins To Sign Breshad Perriman

One of the teams that contacted the Browns about Josh Gordon will sign another former AFC North pass-catcher.

The Redskins will sign Breshad Perriman after working him out earlier Monday, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets.

The former Ravens first-round pick has not made much of an impression in three NFL seasons, years largely marred by injuries. Maladies to current Washington receivers prompted this deal, however. Trey Quinn, Cam Sims and Robert Davis are all on IR. Perriman joins Brian Quick and Jehu Chesson in being in-season Redskins additions, although Quick spent last season in Washington as well.

Perriman caught 33 passes for 499 yards and three touchdowns in 2016. He missed all of his rookie season and part of his sophomore campaign due to injuries. He caught 10 passes for 77 yards in 2017 and was a Ravens cut prior to this regular season’s outset.

The Central Florida product just turned 25 last week, however, and the Redskins will see if they can salvage some of the potential he carried into the NFL as a prospect.
