Patriots To Acquire Josh Gordon
It’s a done deal. Josh Gordon is headed to the Patriots, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. The Pats will send a fifth-round pick to the Browns for the former All-Pro.
Gordon is expected to play for the Patriots on Sunday night against the Lions, Schefter reports (via Twitter). The Patriots will receive a 2019 seventh-round pick from the Browns if Gordon is unable to play 10 games with New England this season, per Schefter (on Twitter).
The Patriots will waive former Gordon Browns teammate Corey Coleman to make room, Field Yates of ESPN.com reports (on Twitter).
This trade was initially supposed to be for a sixth-round pick, but with New England not having a 2019 sixth, Schefter adds Cleveland will receive a fifth for Gordon. The Browns wanted to send Gordon to the NFC, and Schefter tweets they discussed the seventh-year wideout with the Cowboys, Redskins and 49ers before the Patriots stepped up. The Gordon market was vast but not flush with strong offers, with Albert Breer of SI.com tweeting a sixth-rounder was set to get this deal done before the Pats agreed to part with a fifth.
The 27-year-old wide receiver recently underwent a hamstring MRI, and Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets that the scan came out fine. That would put him on track to play for his new team on Sunday night.
This ends a six-plus-year saga for Gordon in Cleveland. He’s leaving a team that’s won one game since the start of the 2016 season and heading to this era’s most successful franchise. Gordon could be controlled on his 2012 rookie contract through the 2019 season. He’s set to be a restricted free agent after 2018.
“John (Dorsey) got the best he could,” Hue Jackson said Monday (via Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com).
Some in the Browns’ organization believe Gordon slipped in his recovery program, per Cabot, who adds it wasn’t Gordon’s hamstring issue but his rampant off-field issues that finally prompted the Browns to cut the cord. They first announced they were planning to cut Gordon. That understandably generated a trade market for the mercurial talent, and Dorsey will add draft capital as a result. Although if Gordon proves healthy and available for the Pats, he’ll be worth more than a fifth-round pick.
But the Patriots are comfortable enough to make a deal. They are getting a player who delivered one of the greatest receiving seasons in NFL history, albeit way back in 2013, and one of the league’s most notorious suspension risks. Gordon’s missed all but 11 games since the start of the 2014 season.
Gordon will add not only to the extensive Browns-Pats pipeline that’s formed — joining Jamie Collins, Barkevious Mingo, Jason McCourty and Danny Shelton among notable players these franchises have exchanged recently — but represent another Bill Belichick reclamation project. He’ll join Corey Dillon, Randy Moss, Chad Johnson and Albert Haynesworth in that club and represent more risk than each, given his history.
The Patriots, however, could well be facing a closing championship window — with Tom Brady now 41 — and have made 28 wide receiver transactions since the 2018 league year began. They’ve attempted for months to find weapons for Brady; they’ve now landed the most interesting possible piece.
New England is without Julian Edelman until after Week 4 and have been discussing receivers with other teams leading up to their Gordon deal. The former second-round supplemental pick joins a receiving corps headed by Chris Hogan and Phillip Dorsett.
Belichick will gamble the newest Patriot can stay on the field. Gordon missed all of the 2015 and ’16 seasons due to substance-abuse trouble, incurred a 10-game 2014 ban and did not suit up for the Browns until December 2017 post-reinstatement. Gordon also missed Browns training camp, reportedly checking himself into a rehab facility in fear of another substance-abuse relapse. He also admitted he’d played under the influence since high school, so his future with another organization will be interesting to follow.
Redskins Working Out WR Breshad Perriman
The Redskins are auditioning former Ravens receiver Breshad Perriman today, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (Twitter link).
Perriman, the 26th overall selection in the 2015 draft, has never lived up to his draft billing, as injuries and ineffectiveness have prevented him from reaching his potential. After missing his entire rookie campaign, Perriman posted 33 receptions in 2016, but managed only 10 catches last year.
Washington doesn’t have a glaring need at wide receiver, as their pass-catching group is mostly healthy. Paul Richardson was listed as questionable for Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury but ultimately played, while Maurice Harris is recovered from a concussion but has still been inactive both of the Redskins’ contests. Jamison Crowder, Josh Doctson, and the recently-added Brian Quick and Jehu Chesson round out Washington’s depth chart.
Perriman certainly isn’t wanting for free agent interest, as he’s met with the Jets, Giants, Bills, Vikings, and Eagles since getting cut by the Ravens.

Redskins Re-Sign WR Brian Quick
He wasn’t gone long. Wide receiver Brian Quick is re-signing with the Redskins according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network (Twitter link).
The veteran wideout was released by Washington at final cuts. It appears to have been partially a procedural move to ensure that Quick, a vested veteran, wouldn’t have his full contract guaranteed at the Week 1 deadline. The team clearly had him number one on their list of players to call when an injury occurred. Two of the team’s reserve receivers suffered injuries in yesterday’s game. Quick’s contract will now only be partially guaranteed since he signed after Week 1.
Quick, who spent the first five years of his career with the Rams after being taken with the 33rd overall pick in 2012, appeared in 11 games for the Redskins last season. He caught just six passes for 76 yards. The year before that in 2016, he caught 41 balls for 564 yards and three touchdowns in Los Angeles.
The Redskins have a crowded receiving depth chart with Jamison Crowder, Josh Doctson, and Paul Richardson all firmly entrenched in their roles, so it’s unlikely Quick sees too much playing time.
Redskins Not Interested In Dez Bryant?
Twenty-eight NFL teams are now heading into Week 2. Dez Bryant remains unemployed. However, the wide receiver’s made sure to keep social media followers informed on his thoughts about potential fits this offseason and continued to do so Sunday.
One of the teams Bryant name-dropped, however, doesn’t appear to have him on its radar. The Redskins are not interested in bringing in Bryant, despite having multiple depth receivers suffer recent injuries, JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington tweets.
This is not the first time Washington’s surfaced as a confirmed non-Bryant suitor, but that hasn’t changed since the offseason. Washington’s dealing with injuries to backups Trey Quinn, Cam Sims and Maurice Harris, per Finlay, who instead foresees a possible reunion with Brian Quick rather than anything transpiring on the Bryant front.
Quinn, a rookie seventh-rounder, and Sims each suffered high ankle sprains during the Redskins’ win over the Cardinals and are out for the foreseeable future. A concussion left Harris inactive Sunday. These three comprise the Redskins’ backup contingent behind Jamison Crowder, Josh Doctson and Paul Richardson. So, Washington will certainly have to make a move at receiver this week.
Bryant expressed interest in joining an NFC East team in order to exact revenge on the Cowboys, whose post-Bryant receiving passing game did not debut well on Sunday, but he’s also turned down two contracts — from the Ravens and Browns. The 29-year-old pass-catcher continues to wait, while at the same time expressing interest in certain situations.
Dez Bryant Interested In Joining Patriots, Redskins
Dez Bryant has now rejected a pair of contracts, and he’s indicated that he’s willing to wait until he receives the right offer. While it’s uncertain if that offer will ever materialize, the wideout hinted this evening that he has at least two teams on his radar.
When asked on Twitter if he’d be willing to sign back with the Cowboys, Bryant said he could instead envision a role with the Patriots or Redskins.
“Naw I’m ok,” Bryant said. “I rather go somewhere I can show case my skills for real.. if I line up next to Gronk hogan Edelman I’m for sure getting a 1 on 1 match up plus I won’t be getting criticized controlled for expressing my love for the game..Washington is cool as well.”
Later, the wideout made it clear that he wasn’t “making a pitch.” However, the tweets could be somewhat telling. We’re still not entirely sure exactly what Dez is seeking from his next destination, as he’s already turned down long-term security (via Baltimore) and a clear path to playing time (via Cleveland).
We could assume that the star receiver is looking for a proper “fit” when it comes to joining his next team. While it’s uncertain is either the Patriots or Redskins would come knocking, we at least know a contract could actually materialize should they show interest in the 29-year-old.
The Patriots depth at wide receiver is clearly lacking, although they managed to get a win today thanks to tight end Rob Gronkowski, receiver Phillip Dorsett, and running back James White. With Chris Hogan in the picture and Julian Edelman set to return, it’s uncertain if New England would be willing to take a flyer on Bryant. If they were to have interest, the team presumably would have already had him for a workout during the offseason or preseason.
The Redskins offense also looked plenty competent on Sunday. While top receiver Josh Doctson didn’t play much of a role, the team still got plenty of production out of running back Chris Thompson and tight end Jordan Reed.
