Washington To Sign Nate Orchard

The Washington Football Team will sign linebacker Nate Orchard, according to agent Kenny Zuckerman (Twitter link). Plucked from the Packers’ practice squad, Orchard will have a chance to see his first live action of 2021.

The veteran will provide depth after defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, defensive lineman James Smith-Williams, and defensive ends Montez Sweat and Casey Toohill were placed on the COVID-19 list. It remains to be seen whether they’ll be cleared in time for Washington’s Week 15 matchup against the Eagles.

Orchard, a 2015 second-round pick of the Browns, lived up to his draft stock as a rookie, finishing with three sacks and four QB hits. Unfortunately, he spent most of his sophomore campaign on IR and fell to a backup role in 2017 before being released prior to the 2018 season. Since then, he’s made the rounds, spending time with the Bills, Chiefs, Seahawks, Dolphins, Texans, and Washington.

Orchard appeared in eight games for WFT over the last two years, collecting 16 stops and one sack.

Jaguars Owner Shad Khan On Urban Meyer

Jaguars owner Shad Khan isn’t happy with the current state of the team. Still, he says that he won’t rush to make any decisions on the future of head coach Urban Meyer

I want to do the right thing for the team. I want to do the right thing for the city,” Khan said (via ESPN.com). “That, to me, is way more important than just acting helter-skelter on emotion. I think we have a history of really looking at the facts and then really doing the right thing.

Gus Bradley was here four years. Doug Marrone was here four years. It was wins and losses and this is a little bit different but, you know, I’m going to reflect on all of that and do what’s the right thing for the team and the right thing for the city.”

The Jaguars are 2-11 after getting shut out by the Titans for their fifth straight loss. Earlier this week, Khan met with coaches to reaffirm his confidence in them while imploring them to get the locker room in order. This comes after a string of reports citing discord between Meyer, his assistants, and several veterans on the roster.

I’m not impulsive,” Khan told reporters. “I learned that a long time ago with anything that’s this important. You don’t want to be impulsive. You want to look at exactly what I know firsthand or people are telling me and then collect that and do the right thing.

The Jaguars will look to get back in the win column on Sunday against the Texans. They last met in the season opener, a 37-21 win for Houston.

Lions’ Jerry Jacobs Done For Year

It’s officially official. Lions rookie cornerback Jerry Jacobs has been formally diagnosed with a torn ACL, ending his season after 13 games. The Lions will place Jacobs on the injured reserve list this week as he gets set for knee surgery.

You feel awful,” head coach Dan Campbell said (via James Hawkins of The Detroit News). “He’s improved so much, particularly from spring just to where he’s been playing lately. Before he got hurt, he had already been doing some good things.”

You don’t want any of your guys to get hurt, particularly one of these long-term injuries. The other thing is I hate that it happened now in December. That’s probably a nine-month injury, somewhere in there. The good news is it’s reparable. He’ll work at it, he’ll come back, and he’ll be better than he was. But you hate it for him and for our team.

Jacobs, an undrafted free agent, managed to start in nine games this season, a touching story in an otherwise trying season for the Lions. He began his unusual path to the pros at Hutchinson Community College before transferring to Arkansas State. Unfortunately, a torn ACL wiped out his 2019 season. He then switched to Arkansas, but mental health issues prompted him to opt out after four games.

This marks yet another challenge for Jacobs, but he has a track record of overcoming whatever life throws at him. For now, he’ll be watching the Lions from home, starting with Sunday’s game against the Cardinals.

Torn ACL For WFT’s Logan Thomas

Despite some early optimism, additional testing confirmed that Washington Football Team tight end Logan Thomas has in fact torn his ACL (Twitter link via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com). Thomas, already ruled out for the year after his second trip to the injured reserve list, will undergo surgery this week and begin his march back to the field for 2022.

Thomas suffered the injury back on December 5th against the Raiders. The early word was a torn ACL, but, the following day, head coach Ron Rivera told reporters that the damage might not have been as extensive. Unfortunately, Washington had no choice but to shelve Thomas for the rest of the year.

The WFT came up short against the Cowboys on Sunday, dropping them to 6-7 on the year. On the plus side, they still have a path to the playoffs in the NFC. Two of their next three games are against the Eagles (with a Cowboys rematch in between), giving them a prime opportunity to gain ground in the Wild Card chase.

Thomas, meanwhile, will focus on rehab and a return to his old form. Last year, he broke out in a big way with 72 catches for 670 yards and six touchdowns. This year, thanks to multiple injuries, he was held to just 18 grabs, 196 yards, and three touchdowns.

Rams Place Jalen Ramsey, Tyler Higbee On COVID-19 List

The Rams have placed cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey and Dont’e Deayon , along with tight end Tyler Higbee on the COVID-19 reserve list, per a club announcement. As well, Robert Rochell has been placed on Injured Reserve. With that, all four players will be ineligible for tonight’s marquee matchup against the Cardinals.

The Cardinals can effectively lock up the NFC West crown with a win tonight, leaving the Rams to jockey for Wild Card placement. If Arizona was to complete the season sweep of L.A., they would remain atop the NFC at 11-2, while the loss would drop the Rams to 8-5.

Ramsey’s absence is a huge loss for a secondary that will be facing a Cardinals attack which has recently gotten back to full strength with a healthy Kyler Murray and DeAndre Hopkins. Ramsey has 59 tackles and three interception in 2021. Without him, Darious Williams will be forced into an even heavier workload, as will David Long Jr., as the Rams’ cornerback room is suddenly dangerously thin.

Offensively, the loss of Higbee will be felt in the Rams’ passing attack. He had produced 44 receptions for 395 yards and three touchdowns so far this year. Already without wide receiver Robert Woods for the remainder of 2021, even more snaps and targets will likely be coming the way of recently-acquired Odell Beckham Jr. along with sophomore Van Jefferson.

The Cardinals won the first matchup of the season, 37-20, in Week 4. Even more than initially thought, Beckham along with Von Miller – both of whom were acquired after that game – will be counted on for the Rams.

Falcons’ Erik Harris Done For Year

Falcons safety Erik Harris will miss the rest of the year with a torn pectoral muscle (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport). The Falcons will place Harris on the injured reserve list today or tomorrow in order to open up a spot on their 53-man roster.

The chest injury forced Harris out in the first quarter of Sunday’s game against the Panthers. That left the Falcons extra thin at safety, since they were already without rookie Richie Grant. Despite that, the Falcons managed to beat the Panthers 29-21, thanks in part to the offensive contributions of Cordarrelle Patterson and Mike Davis.

Harris hasn’t been stellar this year, but he has posted 64 tackles and eight passes defended through 12 games. And, of course, the timing is terrible with the Falcons’ playoff hopes largely hinging on this week’s game against the Niners.

Harris, 32 in April, is scheduled for free agency in March after the expiration of his one-year, $1.35MM deal.

Bucs’ Giovani Bernard Suffers MCL Injury

Giovani Bernard will be out for at least a little while. The Buccaneers running back has been diagnosed with an MCL injury, according to NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero (Twitter link). Between that and his hip strain, Bernard will need some time to heal up.

Bernard joined the Bucs this offseason after being released by the Bengals. Since then, he’s been used as the team’s RB3 behind Ronald Jones II and Leonard Fournette. To date, Bernard’s got just eight carries for 58 yards, though he’s put his soft hands to work as a pass-catching receiver with 23 grabs for 123 yards and three scores.

The Buccaneers also have Ke’Shawn Vaughn on the roster, so they don’t necessarily have to add another RB. But, if they need a fourth rusher, Darwin Thompson could be promoted from the practice squad.

The Buccaneers advanced to 10-3 yesterday by topping the Bills 33-27. Next up, a Sunday night showdown with the Saints. A win would formally seal the NFC South title and bring them one step closer to clinching a first round bye.
