Steelers Sign Practice Squad K Nick Sciba; Chris Boswell Ruled Out
The Steelers included kicker Chris Boswell on their injury report yesterday as he deals with a groin injury, and it appears that injury will hold him out of tomorrow’s contest in Philadelphia, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN. Without Boswell, Pittsburgh did not have a healthy kicker on its roster, forcing the team to make some last second roster adjustments.
The emergency situation resulted in the signing of former Wake Forest kicker Nick Sciba to the team’s practice squad. Sciba spent the offseason in Pittsburgh, after going undrafted, knowing that his performance evaluations would likely be most useful to other teams around the league in need of a kicker, as the Steelers had just rewarded Boswell with a shiny new contract. Still, Sciba composed himself well enough throughout camp to warrant a phone call from the team when they needed him most.
Sciba was extremely reliable through four years in college, missing only 9 of 89 attempted field goals and setting the NCAA record for career field goal percentage with 89.9%. He also set a college football record with 34 made field goals in a row. He never missed a single extra point, converting all 193 attempts. The question for Sciba comes from his leg strength. Through his first three years at Wake Forest, Sciba never hit a field goal over 46 yards, and over his whole career with the Demon Deacons, he never hit a field goal of 50 yards or longer. He did make a 52-yard kick in the Hula Bowl all-star game, but teams still had questions about his leg strength coming into the NFL.
Boswell is missing time for the first time since he sat out of three games in 2020. The last-second nature of the ruling seems to indicate that he shouldn’t be expected to be out long, but the Steelers will have Sciba to lean on either way.
Sciba will be one of the Steelers’ gameday elevations along with defensive lineman Carlos Davis, according to Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network. In order to make room for Sciba on the practice squad, the Steelers released practice squad wide receiver Josh Malone.

Titans Claim DB Lonnie Johnson Jr.
The Titans claimed a player off waivers and acquired a player via trade today. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero (on Twitter), the Titans have claimed defensive back Lonnie Johnson Jr. off waivers from the Chiefs. Meanwhile, Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com reports (on Twitter) that the Titans have acquired safety Tyree Gillespie from the Raiders.
The Chiefs traded a 2024 conditional seventh-round pick to acquire Johnson back in May, but they ended up dumping the defensive back yesterday (while also, presumably, retaining their draft pick). The former second-round pick had spent the first three seasons of his career in Houston, but he found himself in and out of the starting lineup. He started only 19 of his 44 games during his time with the Texans, collecting 172 tackles.
This past season, Johnson started seven of his 14 games while collecting 55 tackles and three interceptions. While he played mostly cornerback to begin his career, Pro Football Focus graded him as a safety in 2021…and they graded him as the worst player at the position. However, he did show some promise in his rush defense score.
Meanwhile, Gillespie was acquired from Las Vegas for a late-round conditional draft pick, according to Wilson (on Twitter). The safety was selected in the fourth round of last year’s draft but barely saw the field as a rookie. He ended up getting into 11 games, collecting eight tackles while primarily appearing on special teams.
The Titans weren’t finished making moves today. As they trimmed their roster down to the 85-man limit, the Titans waived receiver Josh Malone, running back Jordan Wilkins, defensive back Deante Burton, defensive lineman Haskell Garrett, offensive lineman Carson Green, and defensive back Elijah Benton.

Jets Place Vinny Curry On Reserve/NFI List
More bad news for the Jets’ pass rush. They placed defensive end Vinny Curry on their reserve/non-football injury list Tuesday. This will sideline Curry for the entire 2021 season.
The veteran edge rusher underwent an undisclosed offseason surgery and did not participate during the Jets’ training camp, residing on the team’s active/NFI list. Gang Green moving the ex-Eagle to the reserve/NFI list marks more unavailability for its thinning pass rush, with the move coming after the team lost Carl Lawson for the season due to an Achilles tear.
The Jets signed Curry in late March, giving him a one-year, $1.3MM deal that includes $1.1MM fully guaranteed. Curry has 32.5 career sacks in nine NFL seasons. The 33-year-old defensive end has spent all but one season with the Eagles but signed with the Jets to be a role player in Robert Saleh‘s new scheme. The Jets’ edge-rushing group is now even lighter on experience, and the team is looking into trades.
Beyond ex-49er Ronald Blair, who has not played since midway through the 2019 season due to injury, New York is down to the likes of John Franklin-Myers (two career starts; five career sacks) and struggling third-round pick Jabari Zuniga (zero, zero) on the edge. Kyle Phillips (seven, 1.5) is on the team’s active/PUP list. The team will almost certainly add an edge rusher or two in the coming days.
Just ahead of the deadline for teams to pare their rosters from 85 to 80 players, the Jets also waived four — wide receivers Josh Malone and Manasseh Bailey, tackle Tristen Hoge and linebacker Edmond Robinson.
