Vikings Cut 14 Players

The Vikings made their first wave of roster cuts today, announcing that the following 14 players have been cut:

13 of these 14 players were waived, with A.J. Green III representing the only player who was technically released. The defensive back spent the first four seasons of his career in Cleveland, collecting 40 tackles and a pair of interceptions. He caught on with the Vikings via a reserve/futures contract back in January.

Matt Corral will now look to continue his career elsewhere. The former third-round pick caught on with the Vikings earlier this month following J.J. McCarthy‘s season-ending injury, but the Vikings will temporarily move forward with a QB grouping of Sam Darnold, Nick Mullens, and Jaren Hall. Corral still hasn’t gotten into a regular season game in stints with the Panthers and Patriots, although he did show some promise during his brief stint in the UFL.

DeWayne McBride was a seventh-round pick by the Vikings just last year, but he ended up spending the majority of his rookie campaign on the practice squad. There’s a chance he follows a similar path in 2024, although he’ll still only be fifth on the organization’s RB depth chart. McBride had a standout career at UAB, including 2021 and 2022 campaigns where he compiled 3,084 yards and 32 touchdowns.

Today’s minor moves:

Baltimore Ravens

  • Deemed international roster exemption: LB David Ojabo

Minnesota Vikings

The Ravens carved out an extra roster spot after having been granted an international roster exemption for linebacker David Ojabo. The NFL allows teams to carry an extra international player on their roster as long as the individual “is a person whose citizenship and principal place of residence are outside the United States and Canada” and has “a maximum of two years of United States high school experience.”

Normally, this is reserved for undrafted players, with many of those players entering the league via the NFL International Pathway Program. However, the Ravens got creative with Ojabo, who is a former second-round pick. The linebacker was born in Nigeria and grew up in the United Kingdom, and he only came to the United States when he was 17. The Michigan product’s NFL career has been highlighted by injuries, with Ojabo being limited to only five appearances through two seasons in Baltimore.

The move allows the Ravens to now carry 91 players on their offseason roster.

Minor NFL Transactions: 2/28/24

Today’s only minor NFL transaction:

Jacksonville Jaguars

Formerly a basketball player with aspirations of an NBA career, Reyes chose to go the football route through the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program coming out of Chile. Having only appeared in a regular season game during his time in Washington, Reyes made an early retirement announcement after just two years with three different teams. Healthy again and with his rights now waived, Reyes is reportedly free to pursue opportunities with any interested teams.

A former basketball player with dreams of playing in the NBA, Reyes applied for and was admitted into the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program out of Chile. Despite spending time with three teams, Reyes only suited up for regular season action in Washington, where he played 11 games, starting one. As a tight end, Reyes mostly made an impact on special teams during his career. He retires at the age of 27.

A former 60-meter dash finalist at the U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships, Guidry has bounced around the league. But the Jets are bringing back the young cornerback. Guidry played 28 games for the team from 2020-21. A fellow DB, Westry started two games for the Ravens in 2021; he will relocate to Cleveland.

Jackson, Jennings and Thomas all played in the XFL this season and auditioned for the Panthers at their recent rookie minicamp. The Panthers tried Thomas at both tight end and linebacker over the weekend. Although Thomas played in the most recent XFL effort, he was in Colts camp — under current Panthers HC Frank Reich — in 2021. This is Jennings’ seventh NFL stop. The former Seahawks fourth-round pick has not played in the NFL since his 2019 rookie year in Seattle.

Romo joins a Lions team carrying Michael Badgley as its incumbent kicker. The younger specialist has not yet kicked in an NFL game, but the former Virginia Tech kicker played in the XFL this season, making 17 of 19 field goal tries. This included a 57-yarder.
