Steelers Begin To Trim Roster By Cutting 8

After finishing up the preseason this past Thursday, the Steelers are wasting little time in beginning to form their initial 53-man roster. The team still has a few days before they need to get all the way down to 53 players, but here are the eight the team has already decided won’t be onhand to start the season:

Chisena was a longshot to make the 53-man roster at a position that should have plenty of serviceable options in the two-deep. With Diontae Johnson, George Pickens, and Allen Robinson II locking down the starting three positions, Pittsburgh really only has to determine which three or four guys to keep out of Calvin Austin III, Miles Boykin, Gunner Olszewski, Dez Fitzpatrick, Jordan Byrd, and Aron Cruickshank.

On defense, a new-look cornerbacks group will not include Clarke or Harper. Harper is the more experienced of the two and should find a practice squad spot somewhere or even an opportunity to make an active roster elsewhere. The same applies to Rhyne, a former FCS first-team All-American out of Villanova. Rhyne had some NFL snaps as a rookie in Indianapolis and should find more NFL opportunities in the future.

Lastly, neither undrafted special teamer will end up unseating the incumbents. Potter will look for his next destination as Chris Boswell remains the guy in Pittsburgh, and Sunahara will move on after failing to surpass Christian Kuntz.

Baltimore Ravens

Reyes retires from the sport of football after only two years in the league. A former basketball player with dreams of playing in the NBA, Reyes applied for and was admitted into the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program out of Chile. Despite spending time with three teams, Reyes only suited up for regular season action in Washington, where he played 11 games, starting one. As a tight end, Reyes mostly made an impact on special teams during his career. He retires at the age of 27.

Minor NFL Transactions: 5/4/23

Today’s minor moves:

Atlanta Falcons

Houston Texans

Indianapolis Colts

Minnesota Vikings

  • Claimed off waivers (from Falcons): CB John Reid

Hart got into 39 games for the Seahawks over the past three years. The majority of his work came on special teams, but he did manage to haul in 11 receptions during his limited snaps on offense. More notably, Hart had 17 special teams tackles over the past two years, including 11 last season.

Meanwhile, the Vikings made a move on a Falcons castoff. Reid got into 24 games for the Texans and Seahawks between 2020 and 2021, but he bounced around the league a bit in 2022. He appeared in three games (one start) with the Titans before catching on with Atlanta’s practice squad late in the season.

Carter spent last season as a full-time Panthers starting linebacker, but after signing a one-year deal with the Chiefs, the vested veteran could not make his new team’s 53-man roster. The former fifth-round pick has 30 career starts. The Browns just lost linebacker starter Anthony Walker for the season.

An NFLer since 2017, Hollister signed with the Raiders this offseason. But the team released him from IR via settlement earlier this month. Hollister, who caught six touchdown passes with the Seahawks from 2019-20, spent last season with the Jaguars.

Smith, 29, spent five years with the Buccaneers, ending that run as a backup cornerback and special-teamer for Tampa Bay’s Super Bowl LV-winning team. A starter for the 2017 and ’18 Bucs, Smith played in four Chargers games last season.
