Vikings Cut 14 Players
The Vikings made their first wave of roster cuts today, announcing that the following 14 players have been cut:
- G Matt Cindric
- QB Matt Corral
- OL Chuck Filiaga
- CB A.J. Green III
- WR Justin Hall
- RB Mo Ibrahim
- TE Neal Johnson
- DL Tyler Manoa
- RB DeWayne McBride
- OL Doug Nester
- OLB Owen Porter
- TE Sammis Reyes
- OL Spencer Rolland
- CB Jaylin Williams
13 of these 14 players were waived, with A.J. Green III representing the only player who was technically released. The defensive back spent the first four seasons of his career in Cleveland, collecting 40 tackles and a pair of interceptions. He caught on with the Vikings via a reserve/futures contract back in January.
Matt Corral will now look to continue his career elsewhere. The former third-round pick caught on with the Vikings earlier this month following J.J. McCarthy‘s season-ending injury, but the Vikings will temporarily move forward with a QB grouping of Sam Darnold, Nick Mullens, and Jaren Hall. Corral still hasn’t gotten into a regular season game in stints with the Panthers and Patriots, although he did show some promise during his brief stint in the UFL.
DeWayne McBride was a seventh-round pick by the Vikings just last year, but he ended up spending the majority of his rookie campaign on the practice squad. There’s a chance he follows a similar path in 2024, although he’ll still only be fifth on the organization’s RB depth chart. McBride had a standout career at UAB, including 2021 and 2022 campaigns where he compiled 3,084 yards and 32 touchdowns.

It remains to be seen if Nijman will be able to suit up in Week 1, but he has some time here. The Panthers signed the ex-Packer blocker to be their swing tackle.
Grant will be able to suit up later this season, depending on the terms of the injury settlement. This transaction moves Grant off the Falcons’ roster. The former All-Pro return man has not played since the 2021 season, stacking the odds against him. He is going into what would be an age-32 season.

Injury Updates: Lions, Garoppolo, Giants
The Lions suffered a lopsided defeat against the Ravens on Sunday, but plenty of attention after the game was paid to rookie running back Mohamed Ibrahim after he exited the contest as a result of an awkward collision.
The 25-year-old Baltimore native was injured on a kick return – his first touch of the ball in his NFL career. He was placed on a stretcher before being carted off the field. Ibrahim immediately underwent surgery to repair his dislocated hip and he will remain in hospital overnight, as detailed by Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.
Head coach Dan Campbell said Ibrahim is expected to be OK as a result of the procedure, but he obviously encountered an unfortunate situation and will now face an unwanted recovery process. The Minnesota alum’s absence could be acutely felt on the RB depth chart given the Lions are already without veteran David Montgomery for the time being.
Here are some other injury updates from around the league:
- The Raiders used both veteran Brian Hoyer and rookie Aidan O’Connell in place of the injured Jimmy Garoppolo on Sunday in a game where the offense struggled en route to a loss to the Bears. The latter has already missed a pair of games in his debut season in Vegas, but a quick turnaround from his back ailment should be forthcoming. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Garoppolo is expected to be available for the Raiders’ next game, a Monday night tilt against the Lions in Week 8. The veteran hasn’t had the start to his tenure in Sin City that he would have wanted, so pressure will be on he and the team whenever he is cleared to return.
- Still dealing with a number of injuries on offense, the Giants pulled off a win against the Commanders in Week 7, and a boost along the offensive line could be on the way. The team is eyeing a return for left tackle Andrew Thomas next week, Schefter reports. Such a development would mark an end to a six-game absence for the former first-round pick, something which has exacerbated injury and performance issues elsewhere along the O-line for the Giants. Thomas (who has been battling a hamstring issue) signed a five-year, $117.5MM extension in July, confirming his status as a franchise cornerstone for the foreseeable future, so his return will be welcomed.
- Returning to injuries from today’s action, Packers tight end Luke Musgrave was in a walking boot as he left the locker room, Matt Schneidman of The Athletic notes. The second-round rookie was wearing it on his left foot, and testing on it will be worth watching in the coming days. Musgrave is one of many first- or second-year pass-catchers in place for Green Bay, a team which has struggled recently on offense. The Oregon State alum has personally carved out a role for himself, though, receiving 16 targets in the three games leading up to Week 7 and another five in Sunday’s loss to the Broncos. Musgrave has totaled 189 scoreless yards to date in his debut season, and any absence would be felt amongst the other inexperienced options available at the TE spot.

Dulcich already had one IR stint this season due to an aggravation of last year’s hamstring injury. The 2022 third-rounder has appeared in only two contests so far this season, and in the most recent one he suffered yet another setback. As a result, he will once again be shut down for at least four weeks.
The Giants’ decision to again promote DeVito points to starter Daniel Jones missing another game. Indeed, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reports Jones is considered a “longshot” to play tomorrow against the Commanders. It will in all likelihood be Tyrod Taylor under center for New York in Week 7 while Jones continues to recover from his neck injury.

Brian Hill comes to San Francisco with 48 career games under his belt. He had a career year for the Falcons back in 2020, compiling 664 yards from scrimmage in 16 games. The RB has bounced around the NFL a bit since, spending time with the Titans, Browns, and 49ers (two stints). Following stints in the CFL and XFL, the 27-year-old will now add some depth to a San Francisco running backs room that already includes Christian McCaffrey, Elijah Mitchell, Jordan Mason, Tyrion Davis-Price, and Jeremy McNichols.
Trevon Coley started 29 games for the Browns through his first two seasons in the NFL, but he’s struggled to stay on the field since. The defensive lineman got into seven games for the Colts in 2019 and (most recently) six games for the Cardinals in 2020. In total, the 29-year-old has 100 career tackles and 3.5 sacks on his resume.
Adrian Colbert won’t play for the Bears in 2023 after being placed on IR, although there’s a chance he’s cut loose and allowed to play for another squad. The veteran safety has played in 41 career games, starting 22. He’s been limited to only 14 games since the 2020 campaign, including a two-game stint with the Bears in 2022.
Minor NFL Transactions: 8/20/23
Here are today’s minor moves:
Baltimore Ravens
- Waived from IR with injury settlement: CB Jordan Swann
Detroit Lions
- Signed: S Scott Nelson
- Waived/injured: RB Mohamed Ibrahim
Jacksonville Jaguars
- Signed: LS Tucker Addington
- Released: LS Carson Tinker
Philadelphia Eagles

Tennessee Titans
- Waived: S A.J. Moore
Washington Commanders
- Signed: DT Isaiah Mack, P Michael Palardy
- Released: K Michael Badgley (story)
- Waived: WR Jalen Sample
It appears that, like Colby Wadman before him, Palardy is just a camp body. Incumbent punter Tress Way is dealing with a back ailment, and he will only work as the holder in the Commanders’ preseason contest against the Ravens tomorrow night (Twitter link via Nicki Jhabvala of the Washington Post). So Palardy, who has appeared in 80 games in his career (including eight with the Patriots in 2022), will have a chance to audition for other clubs that may be on the lookout for a punter at some point.
Washington is also in need of another player to rotate in on the defensive line, as Jonathan Allen (plantar fasciitis) and Phidarian Mathis are both banged up (Twitter link via ESPN’s John Keim). Mack, who has 25 appearances in his pro career, will at least help the team get through camp and the rest of the preseason slate.
Lions Sign 15 UDFAs
With the Lions kicking off rookie minicamp yesterday, the team was busy adding 15 undrafted free agents to their roster:
- OL Brad Cecil (South Florida)
- WR Chase Cota (Oregon)
- LB Isaac Darkangelo (Illinois)
- DL Cory Durden (North Carolina State)
- OL Connor Galvin (Baylor)
- CB Steven Gilmore (Marshall)
- RB Mohamed Ibrahim (Minnesota)
- S Brandon Joseph (Notre Dame)
- QB Adrian Martinez (Kansas State)
- DL Zach Morton (Akron)
- LB Trevor Nowaske (Saginaw Valley State)
- DL Chris Smith (Notre Dame)
- OL Ryan Swoboda (Central Florida)
- CB Starling Thomas V (UAB)
- WR Keytaon Thompson (Virginia)
Per Tim Twentyman of the team’s website, Lions Brad Holmes expressed enthusiasm about their year’s UDFA class, with the GM noting that three unspecified players were actually on Detroit’s draft board.
One of the team’s most notable additions is Steven Gilmore, the younger brother of former NFL DPOY Stephon Gilmore. The Marshall product had nine interceptions and 34 passes defended during his five collegiate season, and his ability to play multiple positions in the secondary (plus special teams) could give him a strong opportunity to earn a roster spot.
The Lions used a third-round pick on Hendon Hooker, but that didn’t stop them from adding a QB in free agency. Adrian Martinez had a prolific showing at Nebraska before transferring to Kansas State, where he paired an underwhelming 1,261 passing yards with 627 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. His passing inconsistency led to him going undrafted, but the Lions could get creative with how they use the dynamic runner.
Speaking of, Keytaon Thompson was a backup quarterback at Mississippi State before transferring to Virginia as a wideout. He was productive in the slot during his two seasons as Virginia, hauling in 131 receptions for 1,569 yards.
