Patriots To Waive K Justin Rohrwasser

The Patriots will end Justin Rohrwasser‘s tenure after one year. New England is waiving the 2020 fifth-round pick, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com tweets.

A standout college kicker, Rohrwasser did not kick in a game for the Patriots. The team used Nick Folk as its kicker last season, its first without Stephen Gostkowski since 2005, and re-signed Folk last week.

Ex-second-round pick Roberto Aguayo also resides on the Patriots’ roster, leaving little room for Rohrwasser. New England initially added Folk just before Week 1 last year, cutting Rohrwasser. However, the team brought him back via practice squad deal and retained the younger specialist on a reserve/futures contract. As of Tuesday afternoon, he is back on the waiver wire.

Folk, 36, made 93% of his field goal tries last season — a career-best mark — and received some guaranteed money to stay on as the Pats’ kicker.

Patriots Meet With Nick Folk

The Patriots met with Nick Folk this weekend, according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic (on Twitter). Folk could be considered as an alternative to rookie Justin Rohrwasser, who has reportedly been a bit shaky in camp.

Folk, 35, briefly put a stop to the Patriots’ revolving door of kickers last year before taking a break of his own for an appendectomy. All in all, he appeared in seven games for the Pats while connecting on all 14 of his 17 field goal tries. The Browns also met with Folk recently, plus a host of other kickers including Kai Forbath, Cody Parkey and Matthew McCrane. The Browns have a young kicker of their own in Austin Seibert, but the former Oklahoma Sooner missed five extra point tries in 2019.

In other Pats news, the club has given a slight salary bump to durable defensive lineman Lawrence Guy. They’re also exploring additional depth for that unit, including a recent workout with former Chiefs and Cardinals DL Xavier Williams.

Patriots Draft Kicker In Fifth Round; Still Haven’t Selected QB

The Patriots found a new kicker in the fifth round, selecting Marshall’s Justin Rohrwasser with the No. 159 overall pick. Rohrwasser is the first kicker to be selected in the 2020 draft. Meanwhile, they’ve yet to draft a new quarterback.

No one’s exactly sure what the Patriots are going to do under center as they get set for life without Tom Brady. Even though it would have been a very un-Bill Belichick move, some speculated that the Patriots could consider a bold trade up the board for the likes of Tua Tagovailoa or, more realistically, tapped a mid-round QB like Washington’s Jacob Eason. Instead, they’re holding off.

Even if the Patriots select a QB in the late stages of the draft, they’ll finish the weekend with Brian Hoyer penciled in as their QB1. That doesn’t mean their out of other options, of course. Former MVP Cam Newton and former No. 1 overall pick Jameis Winston are still available. There are also some notable arms available via trade, including longtime Bengals starter Andy Dalton.
