Kenny Pickett To Visit Lions

The Lions will be using one of their final pre-draft visits on one of this year’s top quarterback prospects. Detroit is scheduled to meet with former Pitt passer Kenny Pickett next week (Twitter link via NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero).

As Pelissero notes, this will be the first known sit-down the Lions have with a signal-caller. Much of their pre-draft homework has been done on the class’ top defensive prospects, though some of speculated that a quarterback could be the team’s ultimate target. Head coach Dan Campbell and his staff were able to work closely with Malik Willis and Sam Howell at the Senior Bowl, so they presumably have a good deal of familiarity with those two already.

Pickett, meanwhile, has drawn plenty of interest from a number of teams expected to be eyeing a QB later this month. Over the course of five years with the Panthers, he threw 81 touchdowns and 32 interceptions, adding just over 800 rushing yards in the process. The 2021 campaign was by far his most productive, as he set new career-highs in completion percentage (67.2), passing yards (4,319) and touchdowns (47 in total). As a result, he was a finalist for the Heisman trophy.

The six-foot-three, 220-pound passer – like all other top QB options this year – is not seen as being worth a top-two pick, though the Lions have have said they would be willing to trade down; the team also owns the 32nd and 34th selections. That, coupled with general manager Brad Holmes recently stating an openness to draft a quarterback (despite supporting Jared Goff, who has three more years on his contract), leaves the door open to the Lions adding a developmental passer.

There is still a great deal of uncertainty at the very top of the board with less than two weeks to go until the first round. If Detroit were to use their top selection on a quarterback, it would add even more intrigue to the rest of the first round, and have a sizeable impact on the rest of the QB board.

Lions, S DeShon Elliott Agree To Deal

DeShon Elliott visited the Lions on Wednesday; the meeting produced an agreement. The former Ravens safety will join the Lions on a one-year contract, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Elliott’s deal could max out at $3.65MM, USA Today’s Josina Anderson tweets.

A sixth-round 2018 draftee, Elliott became a full-time starter after the Ravens’ Earl Thomas experiment went south before the 2020 season. Elliott started 22 games with Baltimore beginning with that 2020 slate, a 16-start year for the ex-Texas Longhorn. Elliott will join a Lions team that recently re-signed Tracy Walker.

Elliott made 80 tackles, recorded 2.5 sacks and forced two fumbles during the 2020 season. He is coming off an injury-marred 2021 slate. The soon-to-be 25-year-old defender suffered pectoral and bicep tears midway through last season, shutting him down for the year. This continued an injury-riddled slate for a Ravens secondary that also lost Marcus Peters and Marlon Humphrey. Elliott also spent his entire rookie season on IR.

Baltimore signaled it was moving on from Elliott with its latest big-ticket safety signing — a five-year deal with Marcus Williams. Not typically a big-spending team in free agency, the Ravens have made exceptions at safety. Williams follows Thomas, Tony Jefferson and Eric Weddle as Raven signings at the position since 2016. The Elliott-Chuck Clark pairing represented a deviation from the organization’s big-name strategy at safety.

This Elliott agreement may also mean the Lions’ visit with Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton will not lead to a rare top-two safety investment in the draft. The Lions scheduled a visit with Hamilton for this week, though the former Fighting Irish defender is not viewed as likely to be chosen second overall. Detroit now has Elliott, Walker and 17-game 2021 starter Will Harris under contract at safety.

Lions To Meet With DE Aidan Hutchinson, S Kyle Hamilton

If Aidan Hutchinson is still on the board when the Lions pick at No. 2 overall, it would seemingly represent a perfect fit between the Michigan product and a rebuilding team in need of young cornerstones. The Lions will do more homework on the Heisman finalist, with SI.com’s Albert Breer noting (via Twitter) they will meet with Hutchinson next week.

The Lions will also meet with another top prospect ahead of the Hutchinson visit. Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton is set to visit this week, Tom Pelissero of NFL.com tweets. It would be a surprise if the Lions went with Hamilton, considering his position, but the former Fighting Irish standout has secured meetings with five of the eight teams holding top-10 picks.

Hutchinson is also meeting with the Giants and Jets this week. It would be a surprise if the former Michigan pass-rushing dynamo made it past the Lions at 2. The Jaguars are favored to select the defensive end first overall. That would put the Lions to a decision. Both ESPN.com’s Todd McShay and NFL.com’s Daniel Jeremiah have Jacksonville taking Hutchinson and Detroit going with Georgia D-lineman Travon Walker. Hutchinson’s college production laps Walker’s, but the latter showcased elite athleticism at the Combine. A defensive end often used inside as well, Walker made a Detroit visit recently. Hutchinson is a Michigan native who played high school football in a Detroit suburb.

The Lions have also been connected to Oregon defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux at 2 but are keeping their options open. The pick is for sale, and GM Brad Holmes would be OK parting with it before the draft.

No team has used a top-two pick on a safety since the first Browns iteration selected Eric Turner second in 1991. The Lions have the Okwara brothers at defensive end, but after cutting Trey Flowers and not making a notable addition in free agency, the team certainly needs edge-rushing help. Detroit re-signed safety Tracy Walker this offseason, giving the 2018 draftee a three-year deal worth $25MM, and used Will Harris as a 17-game starter last season. Pro Football Focus graded Harris poorly in 2021, however.

Kayvon Thibodeaux Still In The Mix For Lions’ No. 2 Pick

Oregon edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux, once considered a surefire top-5 pick in this month’s draft, is reportedly in danger of falling out of the top-10. That is largely due to concerns not about his physical abilities, but about his effort and coachability. As Justin Rogers of the Detroit News writes, Thibodeaux said at this year’s scouting combine, “I tell a coach that there’s nothing he can tell me that I don’t already know, right? It’s because I’m honest with myself and I watch the tape. So if you’re a student of the game you know what you can get better at.”

However, the Lions could save Thibodeaux from his rumored tumble down draft boards. According to Rogers, Thibodeaux is still “very much in the conversation” for Detroit’s No. 2 overall pick.

The Lions have a clear need for a pass rusher, which is why they have been connected to Thibodeaux and Michigan edge defender Aidan Hutchinson throughout the predraft process. Thibodeaux’s collegiate production — which includes three sacks in seven games in 2020 and seven sacks in 10 games in 2021 — has not been enough to offset the questions about his intangibles, but it should be noted that, last season, he posted those seven sacks and 12 total tackles for loss while playing through an ankle injury.

His size (6-5, 250), and impressive combine performance are further evidence of his high ceiling, and the Lions have thoroughly evaluated him. The club met with him at the combine, had GM Brad Holmes and others in attendance at his pro day, and will bring him in for a top-30 visit this week. Head coach Dan Campbell said of Thibodeaux, “[h]ey, listen, he’s an explosive athlete. He’s a playmaker. He’s got a good, quick first step. I mean, he’s something else. He’s pretty special on tape.”

The Lions are willing to trade down from the No. 2 pick, but if they keep it, Campbell is looking for a player who can contribute from Day 1 (in other words, probably not a QB prospect from a 2022 class whose shortcomings have been one of this year’s most-discussed draft topics). “That’s really what you’re trying to acquire, a guy that you can feel like can come in and he’s going to be able to have solid production for you,” Campbell recently said (via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press). “I mean, that’s kind of the idea. We need to feel like, all right, this guy comes in, it may take just a little bit, but you’d like to believe by the time you hit your first game that this player’s starting for you and is going to be able to produce.”

Though Campbell did not rule out the possibility of selecting a quarterback with the No. 2 pick if the team falls in love with a passer, he also suggested that having an elite QB is not necessarily a prerequisite for long-term success. When combined with his desire to nab an immediate contributor with his top draft choice, Campbell’s sentiments leave the door open for a Thibodeaux selection, though there are plenty of other non-quarterback prospects who figure to make an impact right away.

Lions Meet With Sauce Gardner

  • Another candidate to join the Giants, Ahmad Gardner will pay them a visit and meet with several other teams ahead of the draft. The Cincinnati standout has emerged as the favorite to be the first cornerback taken, and ProFootballNetwork.com’s Aaron Wilson notes the Jets, Eagles, Lions and Seahawks join the Giants in scheduling “30” visits. The Giants and Jets are believed to have strong interest in Gardner, who seems unlikely to make it out of the top 10. The Jets hold the Nos. 4 and 10 picks.

Lions Meeting With Walker, Thibodeaux

  • After a strong Combine showing, Walker is being projected as a top-five pick. He will visit with each of the teams holding those selections, with Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com noting the Jags, Lions, Texans, Jets and Giants are meeting with the pass rusher. Despite weighing 272 pounds and frequently playing inside with the national championship-winning team, Walker clocked a 4.51-second 40-yard dash at the Combine. Viewed as a D-lineman with fewer red flags than Oregon’s Kayvon Thibodeaux, it is unlikely Walker will wait long to hear his name called.
  • Teams will do their due diligence on Thibodeaux, who is set to meet with the non-Jaguars contingent of the top five (Lions, Texans, Jets, Giants). The Eagles (Nos. 15 and 18) and Falcons (No. 9) are also planning “30” visits with Thibodeaux, Wilson notes. Questions about Thibodeaux’s motor and attitude have injected uncertainty into the defensive end’s status. A fall to Philly at 15 might not shock at this point.

Lions Discussing Amani Oruwariye Extension

There were few bright spots in the 2021 season for the Lions. One of the them was the breakout campaign enjoyed by cornerback Amani Oruwariye, which may have earned him a new deal. According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the team is considering offering him a contract extension.

General manager Brad Holmes confirmed that the Lions “have had internal discussions” regarding Oruwariye. The 26-year-old was a fifth-round pick of Detroit in 2019. He took on starting role in his second season, and progressed a step further this past year, becoming one of the team’s most important defenders. In 14 contests, he made a team-leading six interceptions, doubling his previous career total. He also showed statistical improvement in terms of pass coverage.

“Obviously, with Amani, with the ball production that he had, and just being a good teammate – he’s really developed as a leader”, Holmes said. “He’s still a young guy, as often said sometimes, still has meat left on the bone. There’s still upside in him.”

The Lions had the second-worst scoring defense in the league in 2021, but the play of Oruwariye himself stood out relative to the unit’s overall performance. While Holmes didn’t specify how far along contract talks are at the moment, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if an extension is in his future down the road.
