Bills LB Baylon Spector suffered a calf injury earlier this week that ultimately cost him his roster spot, but he seems destined to ultimately land on the team’s injured reserve. Buffalo was quick to add Jimmy Ciarlo as the replacement. The former West Point captain spent most of his rookie campaign with the Jets, and he garnered auditions with the Giants and Patriots after getting let go by Gang Green in May.
The Texans added some depth at wide receiver in Quintez Cephus, although it came at the expense of Johnny Johnson III. The former Lions draft pick lasted three seasons in Detroit, where he hauled in 37 receptions for 568 yards and four touchdowns. Cephus was banned for the 2023 campaign for violating the league’s gambling policy, and he’s since had stints with the Bills, Texans, Rams, and 49ers. Following his first gig in Houston, he had a brief stint playing under Nick Caley in Los Angeles.

Dial, the Patriots second-year cornerback and special teamer, will miss his second year in the NFL after suffering a torn ACL. In cheerier news, Opeta returns to a practice field for the first time in over a year. The former Eagles backup lineman was hoping to compete for a starting left guard spot last year before tearing his ACL in the first week of camp.
Campbell makes his way off the Cowboys roster after being placed on injured reserve with a knee injury. Injuries continue to be an issue for the Ohio State alum, who has missed 51 of a possible 100 regular season games over his first six years in the league and is set to miss even more this year.
Packers’ Nate Hobbs Undergoes Knee Surgery; CB Could Be Available In Week 1
Nate Hobbs will likely not participate in the remainder of the Packers’ training camp. The free agent signing underwent knee surgery over the weekend, as first reported by Sports Illustrated’s Bill Huber. 
Hobbs was dealing with a partial meniscus tear, ESPN’s Rob Demovsky adds. Playing through the issue could have been an option, but this preventative procedure has instead taken place with the aim of avoiding any missed time during the regular season. The surgery was a success, per Demovsky, who notes Hobbs is expected to miss the rest of camp.
That means the 26-year-old will be unavailable for Green Bay’s preseason contests, although he was already unlikely to take part in those. If Hobbs’ recovery goes as planned, he could still be back in time for Week 1. A clean bill of health would of course be key in this case given the investment made by the Packers on the open market.
After playing out his rookie contract with the Raiders, Hobbs was among the top cornerbacks in this year’s free agent class. He landed a four-year, $48MM pact with Green Bay. While the deal only contains $16MM guaranteed at signing, expectations are high for the former fifth-rounder as the Packers prepare for their first season since 2017 without Jaire Alexander in the fold. Hobbs could see notable time on the perimeter as well as in the slot this season while the team sorts out its best arrangement in the secondary.
News of Hobbs’ surgery and required absence helps explain the Packers’ recent decision to bring back Corey Ballentine. The veteran spent the past three years with Green Bay, making 37 appearances and seven starts. Ballentine is back in the fold as a healthy cornerback option for the time being, and he will look to earn a roster spot ahead of cutdowns later this month. Hobbs, meanwhile, will aim to recover in time for the start of the regular season.

The Lions’ additions were likely a result of a shoulder injury to second-year cornerback Ennis Rakestraw. Head coach Dan Campbell said (via team writer Tim Twentyman) that “it’s going to be a while, at best” until Rakestraw returns to the field.
Ballentine returns to Green Bay, where he spent the last three seasons, after a brief stint in Indianapolis this offseason. He started six games and played 488 snaps for the Packers in 2023, but primarily contributed on special teams in 2022 and 2024.
The Giants are dealing with a number of injuries in their running back room, per The Athletic’s Dan Duggan. Only Tyrone Tracy, Devin Singletary, and Darius Miller are healthy, and the first two may not play much in the preseason. New York worked out a number of running backs on Monday, including Myles Gaskin and Isaiah Spiller (via KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson), but Ward impressed enough to join the squad moving forward.
Finley went down with a knee injury at training camp that is believed to be serious, pending additional tests, per ESPN’s Brady Henderson. Triner, meanwhile, will fill in for Seahawks third-year long snapper Chris Stoll, who is dealing with a back issue, according to Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times.
Packers C Elgton Jenkins Does Not Anticipate Contract Adjustment Following Position Change
Free agency saw the Packers add Aaron Banks as their new left guard starter. With Josh Myers departing on the open market, Elgton Jenkins is now in position to find himself at center.

Jenkins – who has thrived in several capacities along Green Bay’s O-line during his career – was not satisfied with the move given the difference in markets for guards and centers. In the spring, it was reported the two-time Pro Bowler was seeking an adjustment to his contract to reflect the move, but no such arrangement was made. When publicly addressing his situation, Jenkins confirmed his agent discussed a restructure with the team but also noted he does not expect one to take place before the campaign.
“Right now, I’m not even thinking about that,” the 29-year-old said (via The Athletic’s Matt Schneidman) when asked about the lack of a contract adjustment. “Been playing this game for 20-some years, seven years in the league. I’m very confident in my ability and what I can do. The financial side, I know that’s going to come.”
Two years remain on Jenkins’ deal, and he is owed $32.8MM over that span. His $11.7MM salary will lock in just before the start of the season (just like every veteran around the league), but none of the former second-rounder’s base pay for 2026 is guaranteed. The Packers do not have a history of locking in money early, so it comes as little surprise no action was taken with respect to a restructure in this case.
Trey Smith moved the top of the guard market to $23.5MM this offseason, and a total of five guards are currently attached to a deal averaging $20MM or more per season. By contrast, Creed Humphrey leads the way in terms of center compensation at $18MM; only six players at the position sport an eight-figure AAV. Jenkins’ outlook on his third contract will be influenced heavily by not only his play but also this position change.
The Packers – who recently activated Jenkins from the active/NFI list – will count on strong play up front while aiming to remain contenders in the NFC North this season. Part of that effort will depend on Jenkins succeeding in his new position as he tries to play his way into an upgraded pact next spring.

Jenkins, who switched to center this offseason, was dealing with a back injury in training camp and participated in a limited capacity on Monday, per USA Today’s Ryan Wood.
Evans, a sixth-round pick by the Rams in 2023, played in 10 games as a rookie but didn’t make the 53-man roster in 2024. He joined the Jets’ practice squad in December and signed a reserve/futures contract in January, but opted to retire instead.
NFC Staff Updates: Eagles, Packers, Panthers
The Eagles recently announced a number of title changes and new hires in their personnel and operations departments, per Mike Garafalo of NFL Network.
In his 15th season in the NFL, and his ninth in Philadelphia, Matt Holland was elevated to assistant director of college scouting. After holding personnel positions in Washington and Cleveland, Holland joined the Eagles in 2017 as a pro scout, elevating to senior pro scout, northeast area scout, senior college/pro scout, and most recently, midwest area scout. His promotion goes hand-in-hand with that of Jarrod Kilburn, who’s been named assistant director of pro scouting. Kilburn worked pro scouting internships for the team back in 2012 and 2014 but didn’t join the team in an official capacity until 2022, when he was hired as a college/pro scout after a 2021 internship.
Others receiving new titles in the scouting department are new pro scout Terrence Braxton, new west coast area scout Rod Streater, and midlands area scout Duke Tobin Jr. Braxton is entering his third year with the team and earns the promotion after switching from operations to scouting last year. Streater joined the team in 2022 as a northeast area scout and has been serving as the team’s NFS scout in the two years since. Preston Tiffany has been hired to fill Streater’s vacant NFS scouting role after a lone year as the director of player personnel at LSU. Tobin, the son of the Bengals’ director of player personnel, is in his third year with the Eagles, following roles as a player personnel associate and a scouting assistant.
We also now finally have a job title for Joe Douglas, who was announced as a new hire back in May. Per Garafolo, Douglas, the former Jets general manager, will be joining Matt Russell, the former Broncos vice president of player personnel, and Dave Caldwell, the former Jaguars general manager, in the shared titles of senior personnel directors/advisors to the general manager. Howie Roseman now has two former GMs and a VP of player personnel advising him.
In operations and analytics, James Gilman has been promoted to senior director of football research and strategy, Jon Liu has been elevated to director of football analytics, and Zachary Steever has been named assistant director of football research and strategy. Gilman is in his eighth year with the team, having started as a quantitative analyst and elevating to senior quantitative analyst, assistant director of football analytics, and director of football analytics. Liu fills Gilman’s old role in his eighth year with the team. He started as a football analytics intern before elevating to football operations analyst, football analytics coordinator, and assistant director of football analytics. Steever steps into the new role after serving as a senior quantitative analyst last year.
Additionally, Grant Reiter was named football transactions coordinator after serving as football transactions intern in 2022 and football transactions associate in 2024. His 2023 season was spent with the Browns as a football administration & research/strategy assistant. New hires in the group are football operations coordinator Molly Rottinghaus and software developer Leif Thorson.
Here are a couple of other staff updates from around the NFC:
- Back in May, it was announced that Packers president and chief executive officer Mark Murphy would be passing on his titles to Ed Policy at the team’s annual shareholders meeting, per Matt Schneidman of The Athletic. That meeting occurred on Friday inside Lambeau Field. At the meeting, the team also went over the annual financial report, released the Wednesday before, per team editor Mike Spofford. Green Bay reported $83.7MM in operating profit in FY2025, a $23.6MM increase from last year. The anomalous increase was the result of an extra home game, courtesy of the 17-game schedule, showing just how impactful those extra home games are for the teams that get them.
- Lastly, the Panthers hired Benjamin Brown to serve as director of data science, according to ESPN’s analyst expert Seth Walder. Brown previously served as the NFL data science manager for PENN Entertainment and has held roles with SumerSports and Pro Football Focus, as well.
