Texans Practice Without Deshaun Watson
Deshaun Watson was not present at the Texans’ Tuesday practice, their first padded scrimmage of training camp. When asked by reporters, Texans head coach David Culley didn’t offer up much of an explanation.

“We make decisions every day based on what’s best for our football team,” Culley said (Twitter link via Field Yates of ESPN.com). “Nothing new today on that.”
Watson still wants out of Houston, even in the midst of 20+ lawsuits. The Texans are willing to make that happen, though they’re asking for a lot in return. Texans GM Nick Caserio reportedly wants a combination of five high draft picks plus quality players in exchange for the embattled quarterback.
For his part, Caserio doesn’t seem to be in any rush. The Texans would have to pay Watson to not play if he’s placed on team or the Commissioner’s Exempt list. Still, his $10.54MM salary isn’t necessarily a backbreaker, and Caserio would prefer to wait it out. This way, he’ll have a chance at a better haul next year rather than accepting pennies on the dollar.
Up until today, Watson was at training camp and successfully avoiding $50K in daily fines. Even then, his participation was light with no team drills.

Texans Setting High Price On Deshaun Watson
Deshaun Watson wants out of Houston, and the Texans are said to have moved on from their embattled quarterback. However, GM Nick Caserio has put a very high price on Watson. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Caserio is asking for a combination of five high draft picks and quality players in any Watson deal (via Ben Volin of the Boston Globe).
Although no team will pony up that kind of offer while Watson’s status remains so uncertain, Caserio can afford to wait out the process. Watson’s $10.54MM salary for 2021 is not untenable, especially for a club that will not be competing for a playoff spot. If Watson ends up on the Commissioner’s Exempt list until his legal situation is resolved, Houston would be paying him that salary to sit on the sidelines, but even that wouldn’t be a big deal for Caserio. As Volin observes, the rookie GM would happily pay out that money this year in order to maximize his return in a Watson trade in 2022.
Volin also notes that the team is taking efforts to protect its biggest trade chip. Watson reported to training camp to avoid the $50K daily fines mandated by the CBA, but his participation in practices has been light. He has been held out of team drills, and he worked as a scout team safety at one point.
Meanwhile, Tony Buzbee, the lawyer representing the 22 women who have filed sexual assault/sexual misconduct suit against Watson, issued a definitive denial of reports suggesting that the NFL has not been given access to speak to many of his clients.
“To suggest the NFL hasn’t got enough information or has not been provided access, that’s just demonstrably false. I think if you ask the NFL directly they would have to admit that,” Buzbee said (via Mark Berman of Fox 26). “I don’t know who the sources are or what they’re saying, but I do know my staff has spent many, many, many hours voluntarily, because the NFL asked us to, and these women have went out of their way to provide information.”

Hundley is the biggest signing on this list. The Colts adding him is a pretty good sign they expect Carson Wentz to miss some significant time. Assuming Wentz misses games, Hundley will battle it out with second-year pro Jacob Eason.
A couple of kickers who have started a bunch of games both found themselves sent packing in Ficken and Rosas. Mannion latched on with the Seahawks. He’s familiar with new Seattle OC Shane Waldron from their time together with the Rams, explaining why the Seahawks added him as an option behind Russell Wilson.

C Austin Reiter On Texans’ Radar
Austin Reiter booked another workout, with the Texans, and the former Super Bowl starter may be on the verge of securing a landing spot.
Reiter and the Texans are expected to continue discussing a deal that would end his months-long free agency stay, per Sports Talk 790’s Aaron Wilson (on Twitter).
This comes after the Bengals worked out Reiter. While the Texans are in the early stages of a rebuild, this status has not deterred them from making numerous short-term additions in free agency. Reiter, whom the Chiefs have since replaced, would be in position to succeed since-departed center Nick Martin or at least represent strong competition to do so.
A former Washington seventh-round pick, Reiter settled into a role as Patrick Mahomes‘ snapper over the past two seasons. Reiter started 32 games for the Chiefs from 2018-20, taking over for Mitch Morse as Kansas City’s full-time starter in 2019. The Chiefs operated aggressively up front this offseason, signing Austin Blythe and drafting center Creed Humphrey in the second round. This left the 29-year-old Reiter needing to find a new team.
Houston added longtime Seattle center starter Justin Britt this offseason, but Britt has not played since the 2019 season. The Texans also signed interior O-lineman Lane Taylor, who joins a brigade of veterans to latch on with the retooling franchise this year.
Texans Trade Randall Cobb To Packers
He’s back. On Wednesday, the Texans agreed to send veteran wide receiver Randall Cobb back to Green Bay (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero). The deal will see the Packers send a 2022 sixth-round pick to the Texans, who will also pick up $3MM of Cobb’s salary in 2021.
The trade came at the request/demand of MVP Aaron Rodgers, who agreed to return to the Packers earlier this week. Without Rodgers’ insistence, it’s unlikely that this trade would have ever materialized. Cobb never played for Matt LaFleur and third-round wide receiver Amari Rodgers was already ticketed for much of the team’s slot work. Still, Rodgers wanted his old pal back and the Packers weren’t about to say no to him, or Cobb’s wealth of experience. Now, Cobb will join Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Allen Lazard, Devin Funchess, and the other A. Rodgers on the WR depth chart.
Cobb played eight seasons with the Packers, totaling 41 receiving touchdowns and more than 5,500 yards. He secured a $10MM-per-year extension in 2015 — a decent sum at the time — but the Packers let him walk in 2019. Cobb signed with the Cowboys and performed better than anyone else left in Wisconsin.
The 5’10” receiver parlayed that success into a three-year, $27MM contract with the Texans, but that deal was authorized by since-fired HC/GM Bill O’Brien. Cobb was also limited to just ten games. Now that they have slot receiver Anthony Miller, the new administration was willing to part with him.
Cobb, 31 in August, is scheduled to earn a base salary of $8.25MM in 2021 — partially paid by Houston.
Deshaun Watson Reports To Texans’ Practice
Deshaun Watson joined the Texans for practice on Wednesday morning (Twitter link via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com). However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that Watson will be able to participate in training camp the rest of the way. The NFL issued a statement this week suggesting that Watson could still be placed on paid leave, pending the outcome of their investigation.
“The NFL’s review of the serious allegations against Deshaun Watson remains ongoing and active,” the NFL said. “We are working cooperatively with the Houston Police Department and ensuring that the NFL’s inquiry does not interfere with their investigation. As we continue to gather additional information and monitor law enforcement developments, we will make appropriate decisions consistent with the Collective Bargaining Agreement and the Personal Conduct Policy. At this time there are no restrictions on Watson’s participation in club activities.”
Off the field, Watson is embroiled in civil litigation with lawsuits from 22 different women. Even without criminal charges, Watson could still face league discipline.
Meanwhile, Watson still wants to be traded. But, by reporting to work, he’ll avoid $50K in daily fines. For now, new head coach David Culley will try to navigate things as best he can. Even with Watson on the field, the Texans are probably more focused on getting newcomer Tyrod Taylor and rookie Davis Mills up to speed.
Texans Release WR Donte Moncrief
With the Texans set to begin camp tomorrow, the team is already making some roster changes. The team released wideout Donte Moncrief with a non-football injury designation, according to NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero (via Twitter).
Moncrief spent the first four seasons of his career with the Colts, including a 2015 campaign where he hauled in a career-high 733 yards. Since leaving for the Jaguars in 2018, the veteran has spent time with five different organizations (including Houston).
He joined the Jets right before the start of the 2020 season, but he was released in October without having appeared in a game with the team. He ended up getting picked up by the Patriots, and he proceeded to appear in six games for New England, compiling 19 yards from scrimmage.
Moncrief was signed by the Texans back in March, and it was believed he’d add another veteran presence to the receivers room. However, even with the impending trade of Randall Cobb, Moncrief may have found himself squeezed off the roster by recent acquisition Anthony Miller. The team is also rostering the likes of Brandin Cooks, Keke Coutee, Isaiah Coulter, Andre Roberts, and rookie Nico Collins.
Packers, Texans Discussing Randall Cobb Trade
The Packers and Texans are discussing a trade that would bring Randall Cobb back to the Packers (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero). This comes at the request of Aaron Rodgers, who returned to the team on Tuesday morning.

The Texans signed Cobb to a three-year, $27MM contract in 2020 under the Bill O’Brien administration. So, after picking up slot receiving Anthony Miller over the weekend, they’re probably open to dealing the veteran.
Cobb, 31 in August, is set to carry a $8.25MM cap hit this year. The Packers can probably make it work now that Rodgers has agreed to a reworked deal.
