Chiefs Place C Jordan Devey On IR
The Chiefs placed center Jordan Devey and linebacker Terrance Smith on injured reserve. In related moves, the club promoted center Jimmy Murray and tight end Deon Yelder from the practice squad to the active roster.

Devey has been starting at center for the last two weeks in place of the injured Mitch Morse, so his loss is no small matter for Kansas City. If Morse is unable to play on Sunday, the Chiefs may have to shift Cameron Erving to the middle and move the recently-signed Jeff Allen into the starting left guard spot. Murray gives the Chiefs another option at center, but the UDFA has yet to play his first NFL down.
The Chiefs and their banged up offensive line will face the Broncos in Week 8.
Jaguars To Release Jamaal Charles
Jamaal Charles‘ stay with a third NFL team did not last long. The Jaguars are releasing the two-time All-Pro running back, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.
The Carlos Hyde acquisition will lead to Charles losing his job. He received just six carries with his latest team. The Jags signed linebacker Nick DeLuca to take Charles’ roster spot.
Jacksonville added Charles to help a backfield missing starter Leonard Fournette. But the team clearly didn’t feel its sans-Fournette running back situation was strong enough, deciding to unload a fifth-round pick for Hyde, who will be set to debut for his new team on Sunday in London.
The Chiefs’ all-time rushing leader and one of the best yards-per-carry runners in NFL history, Charles will return to free agency. He’d resided there since the Broncos let him walk in the offseason. The 31-year-old back gained seven yards on those six carries and appears to be near the end of a decorated NFL career.
DeLuca will join a Jags team that saw reserve linebacker Donald Payne suffer a knee injury in Sunday’s loss to the Texans.
Chiefs Not Considering Derrick Johnson
Derrick Johnson is back on the free agent pile after securing his release from the Raiders. However, the Chiefs’ all-time leading tackler will not be returning to Kansas City.
“We haven’t talked about that…That’s not the direction we’re going,” coach Andy Reid said when asked about the possibility of re-signing the veteran linebacker (Twitter link via ESPN.com’s Adam Teicher).
Jon Gruden loves his veterans, and he appeared to be over the moon after signing Johnson in the spring. Things didn’t work out as planned, however, as Johnson played just 152 total snaps through six games. With all due respect to Marquel Lee and Tahir Whitehead, that’s not a strong endorsement of the 35-year-old’s skills.
The Chiefs certainly have their weaknesses on defense, but they allowed Johnson to walk for a reason. Barring a change in thinking, Johnson will not get an opportunity to contribute to his 938 solo tackles or his 27.5 sacks in a Chiefs uniform.

Chiefs Sign G Jeff Allen
Shorthanded at guard, the Chiefs will bring back a familiar face in Jeff Allen. The seventh-year lineman reached an agreement to return to Kansas City, the Chiefs announced.
Allen played four seasons with the Chiefs, from 2012-15, the last of which being strong enough to entice the Texans to give him a $7MM-per-year deal. That contract did not end up working out, and Houston cut Allen after two seasons. He’s been in free agency since July.
To make room on their roster, the Chiefs waived defensive back Leon McQuay.
A former second-round pick during the Scott Pioli regime, Allen started for most of his first two seasons but missed most of the 2014 campaign. His 2015 contract year featured work at guard and tackle, and Allen’s return midway through the season partially coincided with a Chiefs 10-game win streak that helped them go from 1-5 to the playoffs.
He started 26 games in Houston but didn’t generate strong reviews, with concussion issues and other injuries intervening. The Texans placed Allen on their PUP list in May and reached an injury settlement with the 28-year-old blocker two months later. The Texans added former Allen Kansas City teammate Zach Fulton on a similar free agent deal in March.
The Chiefs are without Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, who suffered a broken leg that has him on IR. Jordan Devey is filling in as the team’s starting right guard. Allen played three of his four K.C. seasons under Andy Reid, so it shouldn’t take him long to readjust to the Chiefs’ system.
No Timetable For Berry
- Chiefs All-Pro safety Eric Berry has mysteriously missed every game this season without much of an update from the team, and he is still without a timetable for a return, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. Sources told La Canfora that the team is “extremely confident that he will play this season”, but no one seems to know when and the team will continue to “exude extreme caution” handling him. The Chiefs defense has been a liability this season, and would get a massive boost from Berry’s return.
Chiefs Place WR De’Anthony Thomas On IR
De’Anthony Thomas is heading to the injured reserve. James Palmer of NFL Network reports (via Twitter) that the Chiefs have placed the wideout on the IR. They’ve promoted safety Leon McQuay from the practice squad to take the open roster spot.
This isn’t unexpected, as we learned yesterday that Thomas had broken his leg in a “freak accident.” Another player reportedly stepped on Thomas’ leg, causing a fracture close to the one he suffered in the last game of the 2017 season. The team doesn’t believe the 25-year-old will need to have surgery, and he’ll be eligible to be activated from the IR after he sits out eight games.
The 2014 fourth-round pick has spent his entire career with Kansas City. He hadn’t played the biggest role on offense this season, hauling in only three catches for 29 yards and a touchdown. He also had a single six-yard carry. The Oregon product also contributed on special teams, returning three kicks and one punt while compiling four tackles. With Thomas out of the picture, Demarcus Robinson and Marcus Kemp will have more opportunities to contribute on offense.
McQuay, a 2017 sixth-round pick by the Chiefs, was waived by the team following the preseason. He quickly caught on with Kansas City’s practice squad, where he’s spent the entire season. The USC product appeared in one game last season, compiling four tackles and one pass defended.
Chiefs’ De’Anthony Thomas Suffers Injury
The Chiefs’ injury report continues to grow in advance of their Sunday night game against the Patriots. Wide receiver De’Anthony Thomas broke his leg in a “freak accident,” according to trainer Rick Burkholder.
Another player stepped on Thomas’ leg, causing a fracture close to the one he suffered in the last game of the 2017 season. Fortunately, the team does not believe that Thomas will need to have surgery, but his status for this season is murky.
Through five weeks, Thomas has three catches for 29 yards and a receiving touchdown, plus one carry for six yards. Thomas has also been involved in the return game, including a punt return for 48 yards against the Steelers.
The Chiefs have five other receivers on the roster, so they won’t necessarily have to sign anyone to fill in for Thomas. Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Chris Conley, Demarcus Robinson, and Marcus Kemp make up the rest of KC’s receiving corps.
