Chiefs Sign Seantavius Jones, Akeem Davis

Chiefs Notes: Berry, Tryouts

  • Another franchise player from the AFC West, Chiefs four-time Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry, is also disenchanted with his contract situation. Unsurprisingly, Berry is absent from the Chiefs’ mandatory minicamp as he tries to sort out his future, writes Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star. Berry could sign his one-year, $10.8MM tender and play this season under that, or he could continue to wait for a long-term deal from the Chiefs or another team. As is the case with Miller, Berry has until July 15 to work out a multiyear accord. Otherwise, he’ll either have to play this season as a franchise player or sit out.
  • The Chiefs have invited four free agents – cornerbacks Trenton Cole and Chris Greenwood, and receivers Seantavius Jones and Devonte Robinson – to try out at mandatory camp, reports Paylor (Twitter link).

Chiefs Sign Bryce Cheek

  • The Chiefs have signed former Akron defensive back Bryce Cheek (Akron) while the Rams have inked former San Diego State long snapper Jeff Overbaugh (San Diego State), Howard Balzer of USA Today Sports tweets.

Ben Grubbs To Retire

Former Pro Bowl guard Ben Grubbs is likely going to retire this offseason, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). Grubbs, who was with the Chiefs in 2015, has been plagued by a neck injury that ended his season last year and will probably end his career. Ben Grubbs

Grubbs was released by KC a failed physical designation around the start of this year’s free agency. The veteran’s contract, which he reworked upon his arrival in Kansas City, ran through the 2018 season and included $6.6MM in guaranteed money. The Chiefs were left with a sizable portion of dead money on their 2016 cap by cutting Grubbs, but they obviously felt that the move was necessary. By cutting the 32-year-old, the Chiefs agreed to be on the hook for $5.2MM in dead money while saving only $1.1MM against the cap.

Grubbs entered the league as a first-round draft choice of the Ravens in 2007. Since then, Grubbs has been something of an ironman, appearing in all 16 regular season games of every NFL season with the exception of 2011 (ten games) and 2015 (seven games). Grubbs earned Pro Bowl nods in 2011 with the Ravens and again in 2013. Despite his down year, we recently rated Grubbs as one of the 20 best offensive free agents still on the board based on his successful history.

We here at Pro Football Rumors wish Grubbs nothing but the best in retirement.

Chiefs Sign Dezman Moses, Peni Vea; Waive Keith Lewis, Efe Obada

  • The Chiefs announced that they have signed outside linebacker Dezman Moses and safety Peni Vea. To make room, Kansas City has waived defensive back Keith Lewis and linebacker Efe Obada. Moses, a key special-teamer, has appeared in 29 games over the past two seasons for the Chiefs.

Chiefs Sign Entire Draft Class

The Chiefs have now signed their entire 2016 draft class, as Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports (Twitter link) that the club has inked the lone holdout, third-round defensive back KeiVarae Russell. Russell was chosen with the 74th overall pick, which Kansas City picked up in a draft day trade with the Buccaneers.KeiVarae Russell (Vertical)

Kansas City didn’t make a selection in the first round of the draft, trading down with the 49ers in order to a acquire a second-, fourth-, and sixth-round pick. The Chiefs were reportedly interested in quarterback Paxton Lynch, but after the Broncos traded up to select him at pick No. 26, KC decided to move back and pick up more draft capital. The club also didn’t originally have a third-round pick, as that selection was forfeited as a result of a tampering incident (though, as noted, the Chiefs did eventually pick up a third-rounder).

Knile Davis Wants To Remain With Chiefs

This offseason, the Chiefs doled out multi-year extensions to Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware, the two running backs who serve as Jamaal Charles‘ primary backups. Those deals left Knile Davis in limbo, but the 24-year-old says that he wants to stay in KC. Knile Davis

I hope so, but that’s not up to me,” Davis said about the possibility of remaining with the Chiefs (link via Adam Teicher of ESPN.com). “This is my team. I’m under contract. I’m here until I’m not.”

There were rumblings that the Chiefs were trying to shop Davis this spring, but the tailback claims that he never asked for a trade. Davis, meanwhile, reportedly requested a trade prior to the new extensions for West and Ware. The Dolphins also called the Chiefs about acquiring a running back in March and asked about all four tailbacks on KC’s depth chart, including Davis.

Last season, Davis’ main contribution came in the Wild Card playoffs when he opened up the contest against the Texans with a 106-yard kick return touchdown. Unfortunately, Davis faltered one week later against when his third quarter fumble allowed the Patriots to put the game away. In the regular season, Davis had just 28 total carries for 72 yards and one score. Over three seasons for the Chiefs, the former third-round pick has carried the ball 232 times for 777 yards, good for a 3.3 yards-per-carry average.
