King Dunlap Retires From Football

King Dunlap is calling it a career. The former Chargers offensive lineman will retire instead of pursuing an NFL gig in 2017, according to his agents (on Twitter). King Dunlap

Dunlap was released by the Chargers back in March and even though he is retiring today, he did have opportunities to play elsewhere, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link). The Broncos were said to have some level of interest in Dunlap following his release, but we haven’t heard his name much in the last three months. That’s a sign that Dunlap has been thinking about hanging ’em up for a while now.

Dunlap, an Auburn product, entered the league as a seventh-round pick of the Eagles in 2008. After going No. 230 overall, he made several teams regret passing on him as he became a quality lineman for Philly. In his final year with the Eagles, Dunlap made 12 starts and parlayed that promotion into a free agent contract with San Diego.

In four years with the Chargers, Dunlap started in all 46 of his appearances. However, Pro Football Focus rated him as just the No. 53 tackle in the NFL last season in what was his second straight injury-shortened campaign. Dunlap, who turns 32 in September, will now get to heal from all of his nagging injuries as he exits football.

Nate Gerry's Conversion To LB Going Well

  • Eagles rookie Nate Gerry‘s conversion to linebacker is going well, as Dave Zangaro of CSNPhilly.com writes. The Nebraska product has put on about 16 pounds over the past month in his effort to go from hard-hitting collegiate safety to professional linebacker, and he will have the opportunity to get significant playing time in an unsettled linebacker unit in Philadelphia.

Peters Skips OTAs, Due Back At Minicamp

Here’s the latest news on some other offensive lines, moving first to the Eagles’.

  • Jason Peters did not attend the Eagles‘ OTA sessions but will be back for minicamp, Bob Ford of Philly.com notes. Lane Johnson worked at left tackle in the 35-year-old’s stead. Peters will be back with the team despite the Eagles approaching him about a paycut in February and the sides not agreeing on one. Ford notes Johnson is expected to slide over to the left side after Peters’ Philadelphia tenure concludes.

Opinion: Eagles Aren't Interested In Maclin Because Of Mack Hollins

  • The Eagles reportedly have no interest in reuniting with old friend Jeremy Maclin, and Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Inquirer thinks he knows why. Bowen says the Eagles are willing to sign a free agent stopgap like LeGarrette Blount if they do not have young, promising options at a given position, but otherwise they do not want to stunt the growth of a talented prospect that could blossom into a quality starter by the time they are truly ready to compete for a championship in a couple of years. Maclin may not be especially productive by that time, whereas rookie wideouts Mack Hollins and Shelton Gibson would just be entering their prime. Hollins in particular is making the Philadelphia coaching staff excited, and as ESPN’s Adam Caplan tweets, Hollins is well-regarded around the league and would have been a second- or third-round draft choice this year if not for a broken collarbone that hurt his draft stock.

Eagles HC: No Interest In Jeremy Maclin

It has been reported that the Eagles have interest in a reunion with Jeremy Maclin, but head coach Doug Pederson says that isn’t the case. Pederson told reporters that the team is not pursuing Maclin “at this time,” (Twitter link via NFL.com’s James Palmer). "<strong

Maclin spent his first five NFL seasons with the Eagles, but it doesn’t sound like a reunion is in the cards if Pederson is to be believed. Earlier this week, ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter heard that the Eagles have some degree of interest in signing him, so perhaps Pederson’s words should be taken with a grain of salt.

Even if the Eagles do want to add Maclin to the fold, they’ll have some stiff competition for his services. The Bills’ meeting with Maclin stretched into a second day and the Ravens, who met with Maclin on Wednesday afternoon, are making a hard pitch to add the wide receiver. The Browns, per Schefter’s aforementioned report, are also interested in Maclin.

The Eagles’ receiver group was disappointing in 2016 but the team is banking on free agent pickup Alshon Jeffery providing a boost in that department. Philly also signed Torrey Smith and added a pair of rookies – Mack Hollins and Shelton Gibson – in the draft.

Eagles-Jeremy Maclin Reunion Unlikely

The Eagles reportedly have interest in a reunion with free agent wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, but their lack of cap space (around $5MM) is likely to stand in the way, writes David Murphy of Philly.com. Plus, with other proven pass-catching options in Alshon Jeffery, Torrey Smith, Jordan Matthews and Zach Ertz, the Eagles don’t need Maclin as much as other teams that are chasing him. Therefore, Philadelphia won’t have the motivation to get into a bidding war for Maclin and use what little spending room it has left on him, reasons Murphy.

Eagles Express Interest In Jeremy Maclin

The Eagles have expressed some level of interest in free agent Jeremy Maclin, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. A deal, of course, would mark a homecoming for the wide receiver. Jeremy Maclin

Maclin spent the first five years of his career in Philadelphia before he departed for Kansas City in 2015. Maclin did his best work with the Eagles in 2014 having caught 86 passes for 1,318 yards and ten touchdowns. He set a new career high in catches in 2015 when he hauled in 87 passes, but he has not replicated that kind of yardage total in the last two seasons with KC. His 15.5 yards per grab in 2014 also stand as a career high.

In addition to the Eagles, the Browns have also shown interest in Maclin, Schefter says. The Browns already made one major upgrade to the receiver group this spring with the Kenny Britt signing, but adding Maclin would give them a formidable 1-2 combo. The Browns are also expecting offensive production from rookie David Njoku, but no pass catcher in Cleveland offers Maclin’s combination of experience and skill.

While the Browns are flush with cap room, the same cannot be said for the Eagles. The Eagles have roughly $5MM in space to work with and they might have to find additional room if they hope to reunite with the 29-year-old.

We now have four known teams interested in Maclin. Maclin is visiting with the Bills today before potentially meeting with the Ravens on Wednesday.

Darren Sproles Reconsidering Retirement?

Darren Sproles may now be reconsidering retirement. The 13th-year passing-down back said in December that this season was likely going to be his last, but on Monday, the soon-to-be 34-year-old Eagles running back wasn’t quite ready to go that far. “We’re going to see,” Sproles said about retirement (via Zach Berman of Philly.com), adding “right after we make the playoffs, come back and ask me.” Sproles totaled the most carries of his career last year with 94, and he caught 52 passes. The 965 yards were the diminutive runner’s third-most in his career. Philadelphia drafted 2016 Division I-FBS rushing leader Donnel Pumphrey in the fourth round and signed LeGarrette Blount, but the team is likely to cut Ryan Mathews. Berman notes Sproles is still expected to play a big role for the Eagles this season, which is the last year of his contract.

Eagles Sign DT Gabe Wright

The Eagles have added some defensive line reinforcement. Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports (via Twitter) that the team has signed defensive tackle Gabe Wright to a one-year deal.

Gabe WrightWright entered the league as a 2015 fourth-round pick out of Auburn, but he hasn’t been able to establish himself in either of his two seasons. The 25-year-old compiled six tackles in seven games (one start) with the Lions during his rookie campaign, but he was waived by Detroit in 2016.

He subsequently joined the Browns practice squad and ended up appearing in five games with Cleveland, collecting four tackles and one pass defended. The 6-foot-3 lineman was waived in late May after the Browns claimed offensive lineman Chris Barker off waivers from the Patriots.

The Eagles’ defensive tackle depth chart has been a bit thin during OTAs, as Beau Allen has recovered from injury and rookie Elijah Qualls is temporarily barred from participating. Before signing Wright, Destiny Vaeao and Justin Hamilton were the lone defensive tackles behind starters Fletcher Cox and Timmy Jernigan.

McLane: DGB Long-Shot To Make Roster

Dorial Green-Beckham, whom the Eagles acquired in a mid-August trade last year, believes Philadelphia has not seen him at his best. After all, he had to learn a new offense on the fly after the trade, and then he had to adjust to a new starting quarterback a few weeks later. But as Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer writes, DGB has an uphill battle just to make the team, let alone make a major impact. The Eagles signed Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith in free agency, they spent mid-round draft choices on Mack Hollins and Shelton Gibson, and Jordan Matthews looks to remain with the club after being the subject of offseason trade rumors. All five of those players are roster locks, which means that Green-Beckham will battle former first-round selection Nelson Agholor — whom the Eagles have more of a commitment to from a salary and draft standpoint — for the final wide receiver spot. So, barring injury or a transcendent training camp, DGB’s days in Philadelphia could be numbered.
