49ers Not Interested In Mike Glennon
Mike Glennon‘s stock is apparently on the rise, but you can cross one quarterback-needy team off of his list. The 49ers are not interested in him, a source tells Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com.
Glennon, 27, has attempted just eleven passes the past two seasons as Jameis Winston’s clipboard holder. Despite the possibility of rust, teams like the Bears are apparently ready to take the bidding to previously unforeseen heights. The Jets were also mentioned as a potential landing spot in January. The 49ers were previously linked to Glennon, but they won’t be among the clubs to push his market.
The former third-rounder started 13 games in 2013, completing 59.4-percent of his passes for 2,608 yards, 19 touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
The Buccaneers reportedly offered Glennon a contract worth $8MM a season, which would have made him the highest-paid backup quarterback in the NFL.
Because of his potential earning power, I have Glennon ranked as the No. 13 free agent on our updated Top 50 Free Agents list. He’s also my No. 1 rated quarterback in terms of ability, but Tyrod Taylor could unseat him from that perch if he’s released in the coming days.
49ers Release WR Torrey Smith
Steve Smith has gone from NFL wide receiver to NFL insider. Smith took to Twitter on Monday to announce that Torrey Smith is being released by the 49ers. Moments later, ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (Twitter link) confirmed the news. On Tuesday, the Niners made it official.
Smith, 28, was slated to carry a $9.475MM cap number this year. His release doesn’t come as a huge shock given his so-so play with the team after signing a five-year, $40MM contract in 2015. In 2016, he had just 20 catches for 267 yards and three touchdowns. He played in only 12 games after missing the final four contests with a concussion.
As it stands, the recently re-signed Jeremy Kerley is the team’s No. 1 WR on the depth chart. You can expect that to change this offseason, however.
Before the trade deadline last year, the Eagles were said to be in talks with the Niners about a possible swap. It stands to reason that the Eagles could be among the teams with interest in the veteran.
Smith’s best season came with the Ravens in 2013 when he had 65 catches for 1,128 yards and four touchdowns. He really went off in the end zone in the following year, notching a career-high eleven TDs.
49ers Could Look Into Tom Savage
Although some around the league reportedly believe the Texans are the best fit for quarterback Tony Romo, other front office members don’t see the fit, according to Tony Pauline of DraftAnalyst.com. If Romo does land in Houston, the Texans could end up trading fellow signal-caller Tom Savage to the 49ers, per Pauline. San Francisco is known to be in the quarterback market, and have been tied to options like Mike Glennon, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Kirk Cousins.
49ers Interested In Kenny Britt
Flush with cap space and devoid of offensive weapons, the 49ers are expected to pursue wide receiver Kenny Britt this offseason, reports Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.

Britt will be entering his ninth NFL campaign in 2017, but is still only 28 years old, a product of entering the league at an extremely young age. Coming off the best season of his career, Britt is expected to be a popular target on the free agent market, as both the Eagles and Redskins have also been mentioned as possible suitors, in addition to San Francisco.
After posting his first 1,000-yard season (an honor that’s even more impressive considering the quality of quarterback play in Los Angeles), Britt may garner an annual salary of $6-8MM per year, as Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports indicated yesterday. PFR has ranked Britt as the fourth-best available wideout, behind Alshon Jeffery, Terrelle Pryor, and Kenny Stills, while labeling him the 18th overall free agent.
The 49ers’ depth chart at wide receiver is extremely thin, and became even more so after the club released Torrey Smith earlier today. At present, San Francisco is fielding the recently re-signed Jeremy Kerley, Aaron Burbridge, Chris Harper, DeAndre Smelter, and Bruce Ellington at wideout.
Six Teams Interested In WR Andre Holmes
The 49ers, Redskins, Lions, Jets, Bears, and Raiders are all potential landing spots for pending free agent wide receiver Andre Holmes, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com (Twitter link).

Holmes, 28, has spent the past four seasons in Oakland after beginning his career with the Cowboys. The former undrafted free agent was a large part of the Raiders’ offense as recently as two years ago, as he posted 47 receptions for nearly 700 yards and four touchdowns during the 2014 campaign. In 2016, however, Holmes managed only 14 catches, but was a key cog on special teams, where he played over 65% of Oakland’s snaps.
Due to his lackluster offensive production, Holmes didn’t earn a spot among PFR’s free agent wide receiver rankings, but clearly clubs have already expressed interest in acquiring the 6’5″ pass-catcher. Holmes earned $2MM in 2016 on a one-year deal with Oakland, which was agreed to after other teams pushed to sign him.
49ers Won't Tender DuJuan Harris
- The 49ers don’t plan to tender either of their RFAs, running back DuJuan Harris or cornerback Marcus Cromartie, Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports.
Five Teams In On Terrelle Pryor
Terrelle Pryor is days away from free agency and, as expected, he’ll have a healthy market for his services. The wide receiver is drawing interest from the Giants, 49ers, Eagles, and Titans on the eve of the legal tampering period, sources tell Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. More teams could get involved and, of course, the Browns are working hard to re-sign him.
At this point, the Browns and Pryor are far apart in negotiations, Cabot hears. agent Drew Rosenhaus is looking for Pryor to get paid like one of the top receivers in the NFL. After Rosenhaus blew the ceiling off of the WR market with Antonio Brown‘s new deal, there could be a domino effect that aids the Ohio State product. Still, a deal that puts Pryor in the top five at his position in terms of compensation would be a shocker.
Pryor is firmly in the top tier of available receivers this offseason, along with Alshon Jeffery of the Bears and Kenny Stills of the Dolphins. Our most recent rankings have Pryor as the second-best WR on the market, behind Jeffery and ahead of Stills. Despite Rosenhaus’ ambitions, I still see Stills as having more earning power than Pryor.
The Giants are in the market for a receiver after parting ways with Victor Cruz and a player like Pryor would help deflect attention from star Odell Beckham Jr. Still, I’d be surprised if they were able to keep up with the bidding on him. The Eagles and Titans are logical landing spots since both clubs are also in on Jeffery and a possible Brandin Cooks deal. The 49ers, like the Browns, have lots of cap space to work with.
Mike Glennon On 49ers’ Radar
The 49ers are still eyeing Kirk Cousins despite the Redskins placing the franchise tag on the sixth-year veteran. But beyond that trade scenario, the team is expected to be among the teams interested in Mike Glennon as a UFA, Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee reports. Although, such a pursuit carries considerable risk with the price anticipated to be close to franchise-QB money.
As teams like the Bears, Jets and possibly 49ers go after Glennon, the fifth-year passer’s price tag is expected to land in the $14-$15MM-per-year range, Charles Robinson of Yahoo.com reports (on Twitter). That would be unpopulated territory within the NFL salary landscape, with the floor for veteran starters being Andy Dalton‘s $16MM-per-year accord. But Glennon represents a unique case, given that he hasn’t started for three years. Thirteen of his 18 starts came as a Buccaneers rookie in 2013.
The Bears are considered the frontrunners for the 26-year-old’s services, while the Jets have been linked to the former third-rounder for a steady stretch now as well. Chicago making this move would be interesting given Jay Cutler‘s now-flexible contract having a 2017 base salary, as the Chicago Sun-Times’ Adam Jahns points out (on Twitter), of $12.5MM. Tampa Bay offered Glennon $8MM per year to stay on as its backup, but it’s clear he’s going to have better options than this.
As for the 49ers, no quarterbacks reside on this roster after Colin Kaepernick made the decision to opt out. The team’s been connected to Cousins, Cutler, Jimmy Garoppolo, Brian Hoyer and Matt Schaub in a complex offseason. Barrows notes a Cousins trade would seemingly need to occur soon to entice free agent pass-catchers or give the 49ers some semblance of offensive identity to show UFAs. But the rebuilding team will likely monitor his situation throughout the offseason, and if the Redskins are unable to sign Cousins to a long-term deal by July 15, he stands to be a free agent come 2018. That would stand to run counter to a Glennon pursuit, the current backup not profiling as a stopgap option the way Hoyer, Cutler or Schaub would.
Whether the 49ers want to compete with a likely Bears Glennon push or not, they are expected to spend this offseason after a quiet 2016. Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com hears the 49ers and Browns are going to be the most aggressive teams in free agency. That would make sense given the teams’ near-$200MM combined cap space.
49ers Re-Sign WR Jeremy Kerley
Jeremy Kerley will not be exploring free agency next week. The 49ers and the wide receiver have agreed to a three-year, $10.5MM deal, according to Adam Schefter and Adam Caplan of ESPN.com (on Twitter).
Kerley came to the 49ers in an August trade with the Lions. He went on to have a career-high 64 receptions in his first season with San Francisco. Teams didn’t think much of Kerley at that point in his career, but the Niners traded for him with a specific role in mind. He flourished with the additional workload and he is now being rewarded for that.
The 28-year-old first made a name for himself when he had 56 catches and 827 yards for the Jets in 2012. From there, however, his role slowly diminished until he was released midway through his four-year extension.
The 49ers will hope for similar production out of Kerley while getting more from Torrey Smith. The Niners can also be expected to explore adding an impact receiver or two.
Three-Team Tony Romo Deal Drawing Skepticism
Houston’s last known stance on this matter surfaced more than a month ago, when owner Bob McNair said the team intends to draft a quarterback. Romo was not believed to be an option for the Texans at that point. Since, Romo’s been connected to the Broncos, Chiefs, Redskins, 49ers, Bears and Bills — with a scenario now involving a three-team trade between the Cowboys, 49ers and Redskins being the most unique — in what’s becoming quite the complicated race. But the Texans are an obvious fit, Brock Osweiler‘s contract notwithstanding, due to their hole at quarterback and strong defense.
