Ravens Drop RB Kenneth Dixon

Kenneth Dixon‘s time with the Ravens has come to an end. Due to a fractured knee, the Ravens have released the running back with an injury settlement, coach John Harbaugh says.

Dixon was placed on IR over the weekend to help the Ravens reach the 53-man max. However, he was long speculated to be a release candidate due to his ongoing health issues.

Its been a rocky road for Dixon, who entered the league as a fourth-round pick in 2016. He made a splash early on, averaging 4.3 yards per carry as a rookie, but lost his 2017 season to a torn meniscus. Before the surgery, Dixon was slapped with a four-game suspension for PEDs, which already hurt his standing in the organization.

Last year, Dixon was primed to serve as the Ravens’ leading rusher, but a knee injury midway through the season opener sent him to IR. When he was brought back in December, he showed serious promise in a limited sample. Dixon ran for 289 yards off of 47 carries, giving him a 5.5 yards per tote average on the year.

Without Dixon, the Ravens will forge ahead with Mark Ingram, Gus Edwards, and fourth-round rookie Justice Hill at running back.

Sunday NFL Transactions: AFC North

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four AFC North teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Ravens, Bengals, Browns, and Steelers are noted below.

Additionally, as of today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

Jets Claim Kicker Kaare Vedvik

This has been quite the weekend for the Jets. On Sunday, they piled up even more transactions by claiming four players off waivers:

  • K Kaare Vedvik (Vikings)
  • WR Braxton Berrios (Patriots)
  • DE John Franklin, (Bears)
  • DB Bennett Jackson (Ravens)

The Vikings traded a fifth-round pick to acquire kicker/punter Kaare Vedvik just a few weeks ago, but dumped him on Saturday. The Jets, meanwhile, have been looking hard for kicking solutions and they appear to have found their guy with days to go before the season opener. To make room, they cut kicker Taylor Bertolet.

The Jets, naturally, will have to release more players to conform with the 53-man maximum.

Ravens Move Down To 53

The Ravens minced their roster to 53 players, parting ways with UDFA Gerald Willis to get there. Baltimore also placed Tavon Young and Kenneth Dixon on IR.

Young suffered a neck injury recently and will miss a full season for the second time in three years. While Baltimore boasts a deep cornerback corps, losing its slot man again will not help the high-end defense’s cause. Dixon will head back to IR. The Ravens placed him on IR in September 2018 but used an IR-return slot on him. That will not be an option this year, which doubles as the running back’s contract slate.

Character concerns caused Willis, viewed as a high-Day 3-type prospect out of Miami, to go undrafted. He is now on the waiver wire.

Ravens Release Shane Ray

The Ravens have released linebacker Shane Ray, according to Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com (on Twitter). The Ravens added Ray shortly after May’s compensatory deadline and gave him a $1.2MM deal with $200K guaranteed, but he won’t fly with them in September.

The Ravens had a glut of edge rushers, even after losing Terrell Suggs and Za’Darius Smith in the offseason. The numbers crunch, ultimately, pushed Ray out.

Ray posted 12 sacks in his first two NFL seasons, but injuries have held him back ever since. In the last two years, he’s had just two sacks across 29 games.

Broncos To Release Su’a Cravens

The Broncos have released safety Su’a Cravens, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL.com (on Twitter). With a strong secondary, Cravens has been facing an uphill battle to make Denver’s 53-man cut. 

While Denver’s previous regime saw Cravens as a dime linebacker, new head coach Vic Fangio told Cravens that he would have to make the roster as a pure safety. That proved to be a huge hurdle for Cravens, who has struggled in coverage.

Cravens was traded to the Broncos last year after spending his first two years in the league with the Redskins. A second-round pick in 2016, he quickly had a falling out with the organization. After injuries, retirement, and un-retirement, he was hoping to take his coat off and stay a while with the Broncos.

Things didn’t pan out that way, and he’s now seeking new employment with days to go before kickoff.

Ravens Cut K Elliott Fry

The Ravens released kicker Elliott Fry, according to ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter). Fry sank a 48-yard field goal in preseason action on Thursday night, but it wasn’t enough to keep him in Baltimore.

Fry now becomes one of the best available kickers in the NFL and an intriguing option for teams sifting through the waiver wire. The Jets, for instance, have No. 3 priority and could be among the interested clubs.

Fry spent most of the offseason fighting for the Bears’ job, but the team dropped him in favor of Eddy Pineiro. In Baltimore, they’ll stick with Justin Tucker, as was expected.

Colts, Texans, Browns Lead NFL In Cap Space

On Tuesday morning, the NFL released a report of every team’s cap space. The total number accounts for the top-51 cap numbers on every team’s roster. Therefore, these numbers will naturally change before next week as teams set their 53-man rosters (although the 52nd- and 53rd-ranked cap numbers (and beyond) for each team will hardly change anything).

It’s also worth noting that there have been a handful of extensions, trades, signings, and cuts since this report was released. However, there weren’t any significant moves that would drastically alter these rankings.

Why are these numbers important at this time of year? Well, rosters will be trimmed on Saturday, meaning an influx of players will hit the open market. While we can’t imagine any roster casualties earning a lucrative contract from a new team, these numbers can help illustrate the monetary advantage one organization has over another. These numbers are also useful in regards to any potential trades or extensions.
