Jaguars, Ravens Complete Trade
The Jaguars have traded center Luke Bowanko to the Ravens, a source tells Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). It’s not immediately known what the Jaguars are getting in the swap, but it’s likely a late round draft pick.
Bowanko has an opportunity to get playing time right off the bat given the injuries on the Ravens’ offensive line. Baltimore brought Jeremy Zuttah back into the fold in August to fill the gap at center, but he was released on Friday along with a host of other notable veterans.
Bowanko, a sixth round pick in the 2016 draft, has spent time on the Jaguars’ 53-man roster and practice squad over the last three years. In December, he was called back up to the 53-man roster when Julius Thomas and Jared Odrick were placed on injured reserve.
Bowanko is the second offensive lineman to come to the Ravens via trade this week. On Friday, Baltimore acquired veteran interior lineman Tony Bergstrom from the Cardinals.

Ravens Cut Jeremy Zuttah
The Ravens have released offensive lineman Jeremy Zuttah and quarterback Thaddeus Lewis, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Running back Lorenzo Taliaferro has also that he’s been waived (Twitter link).
Zuttah, 31, has had an eventful offseason, as Baltimore originally dealt him to the 49ers earlier this year. Unable to stick on the roster in San Francisco, Zuttah re-signed with the Ravens last month after the club suffered a multitude of injuries along the offensive line. The Colts were previously interested in Zuttah, who started all 16 games a season ago, so Indianapolis could potentially circle back to Zuttah now that’s available again.
Lewis and Dixon, meanwhile, were never expected to play large parts for the Ravens in 2016. With Joe Flacco on the mend, Baltimore will roll with Ryan Mallett as their No. 2 quarterback. Taliaferro wasn’t able to crack the roster despite the Ravens having lost fellow back Kenneth Dixon for the year.
Cardinals, Ravens Complete Trade
The Cardinals have traded offensive lineman Tony Bergstrom to the Ravens for a seventh-round pick, a source tells ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter (on Twitter). Bergstrom signed with the Cardinals back in May.
Bergstrom appeared in 15 games as a backup for the Texans last year, but he did not see a lot of burn. The 31-year-old offers experience at both tackle and guard, so he could be a worthwhile piece for Baltimore. He’s not a world beater, but his versatility could come in handy for a Ravens offensive line that has been decimated by injuries.
Already, the Ravens have lost offensive linemen Alex Lewis and Nico Siragusa for the entire season.
Ravens Cut Bobby Rainey, Larry Donnell
The Ravens are getting a head start on their roster cuts. On Friday, they released both running back Bobby Rainey and tight end Larry Donnell.
Rainey was signed in late July and it was believed that he had a chance to make the team following Kenneth Dixon‘s season ending injury. Despite getting positive reviews from coaches this summer and performing well in preseason action against the Saints on Thursday night, the veteran is being shown the door. Rainey’s most notable pro seasons came with the Buccaneers in 2013 and 2014, as he rushed for more than 400 yards in each year. Despite his age (he’ll turn 30 in October), Rainey could still hold appeal for other clubs thanks to his experience and pass catching acumen.
Donnell was also signed to fill a major gap for the Ravens, but he did not earn a spot despite the losses of Dennis Pitta and Crockett Gillmore. Ben Watson, Maxx Williams, and Nick Boyle are now set to serve as the team’s top three tight ends heading into Week 1.
Zach Orr To Intern With Ravens
- Zach Orr is rejoining the Ravens, this time as a coach. He’ll be “interning” with the Ravens’ coaching and personnel staffs, according to a team announcement. “It’s a great opportunity,” Orr said. “I’m thankful because, like I always said, I love football. I still want to be around the game. Even though I can’t play anymore, I still love everything about it.”
Latest On Joe Flacco, Breshad Perriman
Although Broncos head coach Vance Joseph told reporters Tuesday that he “would be surprised” if they traded safety T.J. Ward, his time on their roster is running out, Mike Klis of 9News suggests. Whether the Broncos trade or release Ward, their safety depth makes him expendable, Klis argues. Moving on from Ward would mean jettisoning someone whose reckless style has led to injury issues, as Klis points out that he missed seven games over the previous three years and hasn’t played any preseason games this summer on account of a hamstring strain. While Klis notes that Ward remains a quality player, he nonetheless expects the Broncos to make the difficult decision of parting with a defender who has made two Pro Bowls and started in all 41 of his games during his three-year tenure with the club. Despite Ward’s accomplished resume, both his age (30) and salary ($4.5MM) torpedo his trade value, Klis contends. If the Broncos end up having to cut Ward, they’d avoid paying him any of the $4.5MM he’s owed.
More from the AFC:
- Dolphins coach Adam Gase assured Jarvis Landry this week that he’s not on the trade block – a gesture the wide receiver appreciated. “Coach Gase did an amazing job,” Landry told Steven Wine of the Associated Press. “He called me in and he just talked to me, explained to me the situation and everything that’s going on, and that that’s false (speculation). That’s all I really needed to hear from him.” Regardless of whether the Dolphins have shopped Landry, the contract-year player’s time in Miami could be winding down. Landry informed Wine that he still has no interest in negotiating an extension once the season starts, giving the Dolphins under two weeks to re-sign the prolific pass catcher. They’ve been in no hurry to re-up Landry, though, so it continues to look as if an answer on his future won’t come until next offseason.
- Ravens head coach John Harbaugh updated the statuses of two of his key offensive players – quarterback Joe Flacco and wide receiver Breshad Perriman – on Tuesday, per Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun. Flacco, who has been out for over a month with a back injury, is throwing again and “moving toward practice,” according to Harbaugh. Flacco still needs medical clearance to return to the field, but Harbaugh expects him under center for the Ravens’ season opener against Cincinnati on Sept. 10. And the coach is “very optimistic” Perriman will suit up for Week 1. The oft-injured 2015 first-round pick has been unavailable since Aug. 1 because of a hamstring issue.
- Bengals tight end Mason Schreck suffered an MCL injury Sunday that will lead to a lengthy absence and impact the team’s roster decisions, Jim Owczarski of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports (on Twitter). As a seventh-round pick stuck behind Tyler Eifert, Tyler Kroft and C.J. Uzomah on Cincy’s depth chart, Schreck was already facing an uphill battle to make the club before the injury.
Ravens LB Albert McClellan Done For Season
Ravens linebacker Albert McClellan has suffered a torn ACL and will miss the entirety of the 2017 campaign, according to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun (Twitter link).
To say Baltimore has been hit hard by injuries this offseason would be a massive understatement. A number of key Ravens have already been lost for the season, including running back Kenneth Dixon, tight end Crockett Gillmore, cornerback Tavon Young, and offensive linemen Alex Lewis and Nico Siragusa. Quarterback Joe Flacco, meanwhile, is also dealing with back issues, although he’s expected to return in time for Week 1.
While he’s primarily served as a backup during his six-year NFL career, the 31-year-old McClellan started 11 games in 2016 (the second time he’s done so). On 603 defensive snaps, McClellan posted 52 tackles and one sack but earned negative grades from Pro Football Focus, which ranked him as the league’s fourth-worst edge defender.
McClellan has two years left on a three-year, $3.75MM pact he signed prior to the 2016 campaign. He’s scheduled to count for $1.2MM and $1.45MM on Baltimore’s salary cap in 2017 and 2018, respectively.

Ravens Extend Coach John Harbaugh
The Ravens and coach John Harbaugh have reached agreement on a contract extension, as Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Harbaugh’s previous deal went through the 2018 season and the new deal gives him an additional year at the helm, taking him through the 2019 season.
Harbaugh has enjoyed tremendous success as the Ravens’ head coach ever since taking on the role in 2008. Baltimore has made the playoffs in six of its nine Harbaugh-led seasons, including the Super Bowl title following the 2012 campaign. Despite a 13-19 mark in 2015 and 2016, Harbaugh still boasts an 85-59 record.
Harbaugh’s tenth year as the Ravens’ head coach figures to be one of the most challenging yet. Already, a number of players have suffered major injuries including tight end Dennis Pitta, running back Kenneth Dixon, tight end Crockett Gillmore, cornerback Maurice Canady, offensive lineman Alex Lewis, linebacker Albert McClellan, offensive lineman Nico Siragusa, cornerback Tavon Young, and wide receiver Tim White. The team hopes that Canady can return from IR, but the other injuries were season-enders. There’s also Joe Flacco‘s lingering back troubles to worry about.
