Detroit Lions News & Rumors

Lions Place Frank Ragnow On IR

The Lions have placed Frank Ragnow on injured reserve, per a club announcement. The center will miss at least three games as he works his way back from a toe injury.

It’s another bad blow for the winless Lions, who also have left tackle Taylor Decker on the injured reserve list. Meanwhile, on the other side of the ball, they’ve lost edge rusher Romeo Okwara for the year with a torn Achilles. They’ve since added offensive lineman Ryan McCollum and promoted linebacker Jessie Lemonier, but the Lions are hurting as a whole.

Up until now, Ragnow has been mostly healthy, save for three missed contests due to injury. He’s been first-string for Detroit ever since he was taken with the No. 20 overall pick in 2018. At first, the Lions used the Arkansas product at left guard. In 2019, they shifted him to the middle. And, in May, they made him the highest-paid center in the NFL with a $70MM re-up.

The 0-4 Lions — sans Ragnow — will face the Vikings on Sunday.

Lions’ Romeo Okwara Done For Year

The Lions’ fear has been confirmed. Edge rusher Romeo Okwara has been diagnosed with a torn Achilles that will rule him out for the remainder of the season (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport).

The Lions will place Okwara on the injured reserve list, opening up a new spot on the 53-man roster. Replacing his production will be a different matter. Now at 0-4, the Lions’ odds of righting the ship have gone down drastically. They’ve already lost cornerback Jeff Okudah — also an Achilles tear — and they’re still awaiting Trey Flowers‘ return from shoulder and knee issues. Plus, Lions center Frank Ragnow was also forced out this week with a toe injury, though that seems to be a short-term matter.

Doctors — and non-medical professionals — could immediately tell that Okwara was in bad shape. The pass rusher was in obvious pain on Sunday and couldn’t put weight on his left leg as he hobbled off the field.

Okwara registered a career-high ten sacks last year with 44 stops, three forced fumbles, and 18 total quarterback hits. And, through the first three games this year, he was Detroit’s most productive defender. The Lions will be counting on Flowers (if healthy), Charles Harris, Julian Okwara, and Austin Bryant for support as they search for win No. 1.

Torn Achilles For Lions’ Romeo Okwara?

On Sunday, Lions head coach Dan Campbell told reporters that Romeo Okwara‘s lower leg injury “doesn’t look good.” More specifically, sources believe that the edge rusher has torn his Achilles (Twitter link via NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport).

Tomorrow’s tests will confirm Okwara’s condition, but it doesn’t sound promising. A torn Achilles would instantly end the 26-year-old’s season and leave Detroit without one of its best defenders.

Okwara re-upped with the Lions on three-year, $39MM deal in March with $25MM guaranteed. He registered a career-high ten sacks last year, setting himself up for another impactful season.

Similar to Shaquil Barrett — who scored a $72MM deal from the Bucs — Okwara was hardly known just a few years ago. He missed the Giants’ 53-man cut in ’18, but he developed into something of a sack machine. The Lions didn’t get to see much of that in 2021, unfortunately. In his four games, Okwara has notched just one sack with six stops.

The Lions are now 0-4 after losing 24-14 to the Bears in Chicago. Already on the cusp of playoff irrelevance, they’ll try for their first win next week against the Vikings.

Lions OC Anthony Lynn: No Word From USC

USC reportedly has Anthony Lynn on the radar. However, the Lions’ offensive coordinator says he hasn’t been contacted by anyone with the Trojans (Twitter link via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press).

Lynn says he remains completely focused on the Lions, who are still in search of their first win this year. At the same time, he declined to say whether he would consider the opportunity at USC after the season. While the athletic department has yet to reach out, it’s been reported that boosters have made contact.

Lynn, 52, spent four years as the Chargers’ head coach up until he was canned in January. Weeks later, he agreed to join Dan Campbell as the Lions’ OC, but Lynn initially planned to take the year off.

I’ve been on the sideline since I was six years old. I have not had a break since I was six years old, literally, every single fall,” Lynn said over the summer. “I really had my mind made up that I was going to take a gap year travel a little bit, go see some other teams, visit some of the coaches that I know, and see how they’re doing things. I had made my mind up to sit out this year, but then when Dan called, you know, that changed everything.

Eric Bieniemy has also been linked to the USC vacancy and some have wondered whether Urban Meyer could get in the mix. For his part, Meyer says he’s committed to the Jaguars.

Lions OC Anthony Lynn On USC Radar?

Anthony Lynn relocated to Detroit this offseason, doing so after a four-year Los Angeles stay. The longtime NFL coach would be interested in moving back to L.A., should a rather notable opportunity emerge.

USC boosters have reached out to Lynn about the school’s head coaching vacancy, Jim Trotter of NFL.com tweets. While no official contact between the parties has taken place, Trotter adds Lynn would be interested in the high-profile college position.

Lynn, 52, has been an NFL lifer, playing eight seasons as a running back before breaking into coaching the year he retired (2000). He has not skipped an NFL season since, though he planned to this year after the Chargers fired him in January. The Lions hired Lynn as their OC soon after his Bolts ouster, and he has returned to a play-calling role.

Eric Bieniemy joined Lynn on the USC radar, while speculation has linked Urban Meyer to the job — to the point the Jaguars HC has needed to deny rumors about him returning to the college ranks. Bieniemy would join Lynn in being interested, though he obviously did not indicate this publicly. It is also unclear if either would take the job if it meant leaving their current post before season’s end. That would almost certainly be necessary.

Lions Release LB Jamie Collins

No Jamie Collins trade ended up materializing, and the Lions are moving on. They officially released Collins on Tuesday afternoon.

Detroit deactivated the veteran linebacker for its Week 3 game, doing so after Dan Campbell indicated the team was shopping him. Collins will become an interesting in-season free agent, being just two years removed from a standout season in his second Patriots stint — one that led the Lions to sign him to a three-year, $30MM deal in free agency.

The Lions’ previous regime authorized that pact, and Collins quickly fell out of favor with the Campbell-Brad Holmes power structure. The Lions stand to take on more than $11MM in dead money as a result of this transaction. Since the trade deadline has not yet passed, Collins, 32 in October, is free to sign with any team. Although Collins restructuring his contract seemingly made him a more attractive trade piece, as his 2021 base salary dropped to $3.8MM, he will likely end up with a less lucrative deal elsewhere.

This marks the second time a team has cut Collins, with the Browns doing so in 2019. The Lions went down a similar path with the longtime starter, signing him to an eight-figure-per-year contract — though, Collins’ Detroit pact did not quite match his then-linebacker-record Cleveland deal from 2017 (four years, $50MM) — before cutting bait. The Patriots, who drafted Collins in the 2012 second round, signed him to a one-year, incentive-laden deal in 2019.

Used as a hybrid player in New England, Collins made the Pro Bowl in 2015 — when he registered 5.5 sacks and forced an NFL-high five fumbles — and the Southern Miss product delivered a seven-sack season in 2019. He made 101 tackles with the Lions last year. Through two games this season, Pro Football Focus rated Collins as a top-25 off-ball ‘backer.

With Collins a healthy scratch, the Lions used fourth-round rookie Derrick Barnes alongside offseason pickup Alex Anzalone against the Ravens.
