Eagles Cut Down To 53

The Eagles’ receiving corps became a bit younger on Saturday. Two veterans brought in as possible depth pieces — Markus Wheaton and Kamar Aiken — were informed they will be released.

So was potential secondary cog De’Vante Bausby and rookie UDFA running back Josh Adams, given one of this year’s largest guarantees among the undrafted contingent. Philadelphia also placed safety Chris Maragos on its Reserve/PUP list, shelving him for at least six weeks.

Here are the players the Eagles will not be including on their initial 2018 53-man roster:

Workout Notes: Patriots, Jets, Bills

The Patriots auditioned some players of note this week, including linebacker Akeem Ayers, quarterback Thad Lewis, and wide receiver Jeremy Ross (Twitter link via Mike Reiss of ESPN.com).

Ayers has some history with New England after playing on their 2014 Super Bowl championship team. Last year, Ayers appeared in all 16 games for Indianapolis and recorded two sacks.

Linebackers Nicholas Grigsby and Antwione Williams also showed their stuff for the Pats.

Here’s a look at Wednesday’s other workouts from around the NFL:

Cardinals Down To 53

The Cardinals announced their full slate of cuts to get to 53:

Wright was a standout at the University of Arizona. As a sophomore for the Wildcats, Wright was an absolute monster as he tallied 163 tackles, 29 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, and six forced fumbles. Unfortunately, he was slowed by injuries in 2015 and he wound up as a seventh-round pick of the Browns. The Cardinals were happy to scoop him up in December, but he has been pushed out in favor of veteran Josh Bynes and others.

Also of note – fourth-round guard Dorian Johnson has been cut. Johnson struggled in camp and the Cardinals were not willing to use a roster spot on him. I would speculate that he could be a taxi squad candidate.

Cardinals Sign 17 Undrafted Players

The Cardinals announced that they have signed 17 undrafted free agents. Here’s the complete list:

  • WR Carlton Agudosi (Rutgers)
  • DT Collin Bevins (NW Missouri State)
  • C Lucas Crowley (North Carolina)
  • S Ironhead Gallon (Georgia Southern)
  • S Gump Hayes (Arizona State)
  • WR Krishawn Hogan (Marian)
  • S Drico Johnson (Central Florida)
  • OLB TreVon Johnson (Weber State)
  • QB Trevor Knight (Texas A&M)
  • CB Ryan Lewis (Pittsburgh)
  • T Jonathan McLaughlin (Virginia Tech)
  • S Cyril Noland-Lewis (Louisiana Tech)
  • TE Ricky Seals-Jones (Texas A&M)
  • CB Sojourn Shelton (Wisconsin)
  • RB James Summers (East Carolina)
  • DT Pasoni Tasini (Utah)
  • TE Steven Wroblewski (Southern Utah)

The Cardinals apparently had some competition to sign Shelton as they gave him $25K to sign (Twitter link via Tom Pelissero of USA Today). Coming out of Florida, Shelton was a four-star recruit and he went on to be a four-year starter for the Badgers. However, his lack of size probably prevented him from being drafted. The 5’9″, 177-pound corner will now look to make it from the Cardinals 90-man roster to the 53-man version.
