Rams Still Haven't Signed Draft Picks

The majority of the 2018 NFL Draft class is now signed, but that’s not the case in Los Angeles. The Rams have yet to sign a single pick.

This isn’t new to the team, as Michael David Smith of PFT writes, as it likes to address financial planning with its players before giving them a large signing bonus. Like in years past, the Rams rookies will all generally sign at once sometime in the next few weeks.

So no need to panic Rams fans. This is par for the course.

Rams Work Out Cody Keith

  • Free agent quarterback Cody Keith is working out for the Colts on Wednesday, and previously auditioned for the Chargers and Rams, per Rapoport (Twitter link). A former four-star recruit, Keith was limited by injuries during his collegiate career at East Carolina, and was only attempted just 11 passes before moving to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Since that time, Keith has spent time in the Canadian Football League and in the Spring League, working on Johnny Manziel‘s team in the latter venture.

Rams Optimistic On Aaron Donald Extension

The Rams are remaining optimistic in regard to a potential extension for All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald, but there is “still a ways to go” before an agreement is reached, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (Twitter link). Los Angeles head coach Sean McVay has been texting with Donald, and the results have been positive, as he relayed to Andrew Siciliano of NFL.com (Twitter link). “He’s responding more than he was at this time last year, so that’s what I feel good about,” said McVay.

Donald, 26, is heading into the final year of his contract, during which he will earn just $6.892MM under the terms of his fifth-year option. After staging a holdout in 2017, Donald has not indicated whether he’ll employ the same strategy this season. But talks between Donald and the Rams don’t seem to be tinged by any sort of acrimony, as evidenced both by McVay’s recent comments and Los Angeles’ admission that Donald will likely become the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL.

At present, the highest-paid defender in the league is Broncos edge rusher Von Miller, who collects $19.083MM annually. Among interior defenders, the Eagles’ Fletcher Cox leads the way at $17.1MM per season, but Donald figures to blow by that mark and instead target Miller’s annual value. Indeed, it’s entirely possible — and perhaps even likely — that Donald will become the first defensive player to cross the $20MM/year threshold.

Donald, of course, has made a strong argument for his next contract by playing as the league’s best defender for some time. Donald, the 2017 Defensive Player of the Year, has earned Pro Bowl nods in each of his four pro campaigns, and was named a first-team All-Pro from 2015-17. Last season, Donald not only led the league in total pressures, but also tied for the best rate of pressure on a per-rate basis, tweets Sam Monson of Pro Football Focus, indicating Donald’s incredible level of efficiency.

Rams Waive 2017 Draft Pick

The Rams released 2017 draft pick Sam Rogers on Tuesday morning, per a team announcement. Running back Lenard Tillery was also waived and the team signed undrafted defensive tackle Dalton Keene and UDFA safety Charles Williams to take their places on the roster.

The fullback made a name for himself at Virginia Tech with his aggressive playing style. The Rams saw him as a tough, versatile player who could contribute on special teams. Last year, he missed the final cut but spent the year on the practice squad. This year, he apparently couldn’t cut it in camp.

The addition of Keene and Williams gives the Rams 16 undrafted rookies on their 90-man roster, plus eleven draft picks. With Rogers out of the picture, the Rams do not have any fullbacks under contract. At running back, the Rams have Todd Gurley, Malcolm Brown, Justin Davis, sixth-round rookie John Kelly, and Kent State UDFA Nick Holley.

Kurt Warner Considered NFL Comeback

Plenty of NFL players have retired and un-retired, but Kurt Warner considered doing something unprecedented. The Hall of Fame quarterback pondered a return for this season as he nears his 47th birthday (video link via Patrick Daugherty of NBC Sports).

I was actually ready to, for this coming season, I actually talked to a coach and my wife said, ‘Go for it, I think it would be great,‘” Warner said during a St. Louis Cardinals telecast. “So I actually talked to a coach about possibly doing it if they needed someone, but then they went out and signed somebody. I don’t think they thought I was serious. So I think we’re completely done now.”

Warner, a former Super Bowl champion and MVP, last took the field in the 2009 season with the Cardinals. He left the game on a high note after leading Arizona to a victory in the opening round of the playoffs, but he has also been out of action for nearly a decade. It’s not clear if any team would have given real consideration to signing Warner, but it sounds like he was fairly serious about the idea on his end.

Running back Herschel Walker famously claimed that he could still play in the NFL when he was in his 50s. He never did make his way back to the gridiron, but he did compete as a professional mixed martial artist in the now defunct Strikeforce promotion.

It’s unlikely that Warner would have garnered real consideration for his planned return, but it’s a fun what-if scenario to ponder.
