Giants, Eli Manning Making Progress On Deal

The Giants and quarterback Eli Manning were believed to be far apart in extension talks for most of the summer, but with the season right around the corner, there’s still a chance that the two sides could reach an agreement, writes Jordan Raanan of NJ.com. A source with knowledge of the negotiations recently told Raanan that he expects a deal to happen before Week 1, and Manning has acknowledged that progress has been made in contract discussions.

For his part, Manning has mostly avoided discussing his contract, which expires at season’s end, suggesting that his focus is on football. But according to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News (Twitter links), the two-time Super Bowl MVP addressed the issue on WFAN today.

“I’m not a big fan of negotiations going on during the season,” Manning said. “I’m hoping if this thing is going to get done, it’s going to get done very quickly … and not have these talks continue on.”

As Manning and the Giants potentially move toward a new agreement, the team also has to figure out what to do with veteran pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul, who reported to New York yesterday and took a physical with the team.

A source tells ESPN’s Dan Graziano (Twitter link) that the Giants were encouraged by Monday’s meeting with JPP, and that the team could engaged in contract talks with Pierre-Paul’s agent as soon as today. However, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets that the Giants are still reviewing records and notes from the 26-year-old’s physical, and are “conferring internally” before making their next move.

Pierre-Paul believes he’s capable of playing Week 1, but it’s not clear whether the Giants share his confidence — if they do, they’ll have to get him under contract within the next few days.

Latest On Kam Chancellor

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said “a couple teams” have called to express trade interest in safety Kam Chancellor, according to Gregg Bell of The News Tribune (on Twitter). However, he said that Seattle not interested in any sort of trade involving Chancellor, despite his holdout.

Carroll wouldn’t name names, but Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News confirms that the Giants were among those clubs inquiring on Chancellor. As Carroll alluded to, however, Vacchiano hears that the Seahawks either won’t part with Chancellor or, if they do entertain offers, they’ll set an absurdly high asking price.

  • With days to go before the start of the regular season, nothing has changed between the two sides, a source with knowledge of the situation tells Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
  • Carroll echoed that sentiment in a morning chat with710 ESPN Seattle, telling beat writers that “everything is pretty well stated” and that the team is unlikely to budge on its position despite how things may go in the first few games of the season, Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times tweets. Carroll also called this “an important week” to see where things with Chancellor are headed (link).

NFC Practice Squad Updates: 9/7/15

While many teams filled up their 10-man practice squads on Sunday, plenty of teams didn’t confirm their moves right away, or kept a few spots open on those units. On top of that, at least one club that signed 10 players to its taxi squad on Sunday has already made several changes, bringing in new players and jettisoning players who didn’t even spend 24 hours on the squad.

We’ll have updates on Monday’s NFC practice squad signings and cuts in this space, with teams listed in alphabetical order. When new moves occur, we’ll bump this post back to the top of the page. Here’s a round-up of today’s moves:

Jason Pierre-Paul Reporting To Giants

2:02pm: Pierre-Paul is in New York for his physical, and while his hand is wrapped for protection, he has no broken bones, per Rapoport and Albert Breer (all Twitter links). The Giants plan to have Tom Coughlin, John Mara, and Jerry Reese meet with JPP when he’s ready.

Rapoport and Breer also note that Pierre-Paul and the Giants will likely rework his contract before he signs, since the team will want to reduce his salary and JPP will want to avoid being placed on the NFI list.

8:37am: Jason Pierre-Paul is set to fly in to reunite with the Giants today, and an all-important physical examination is on the schedule for the veteran defensive end, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (via Twitter).

Pierre-Paul is still recovering from a hand injury that he sustained on the July 4th weekend in a fireworks accident. JPP, who lost a finger in the mishap, has yet to report to the Giants, so the team is unsure about how the pass rusher’s rehab has progressed. That makes today’s physical an important stepping stone for franchise-tag recipient, as he looks to get back on the field.

For now, Pierre-Paul also technically remains a free agent, having not signed his franchise tender from the Giants. Not signing that one-year deal gave the 26-year-old leeway to miss training camp and the preseason without being fined, and allows him to avoid being placed on New York’s non-football injury list for the first six weeks. When a team places a player on the NFI list, it can also elect to not pay him.

Of course, JPP also won’t get paid as long as he’s not under contract, but if he doesn’t sign his deal before the season gets underway, he’ll only forfeit salary a week at a time, rather than risking losing a six-week chunk at once.

The Giants’ defense has been somewhat banged up so far this summer, particularly in the secondary, so if Pierre-Paul is close to being able to return to the field and get some pressure on opposing passers, it would be a significant boon for that unit.

Free Agent Notes: Gray, Coxson, Workouts

Former Patriots running back Jonas Gray was one of the more notable offensive players to hit the waiver wire this weekend, as his time in New England came to an end. Now that he’s a free agent, Gray is drawing interest from several teams, as we heard yesterday, and he’ll pay a visit to one of those teams on Tuesday.

Gray’s agent, Sean Stellato, tells Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (Twitter link) that his client has a workout scheduled for tomorrow with the Titans. Tennessee also acquired Terrance West from the Browns in a weekend trade, so the club is clearly looking for other options to complement Bishop Sankey, after having placed David Cobb on injured reserve with the designation to return.

Here are a few more notes on free agents, or players who figure to become available soon:

  • Wide receiver Adrian Coxson, who signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent in May and was let go by the team in August, is retiring from the NFL due to ongoing concussion symptoms, according to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post. “It’s been recommended to me by two neurologists and two doctors to retire from football,” Coxson told Wilson. “The next hit to my head could possibly kill me or be life damaging.”
  • The Dolphins are trying out former Falcons linebacker Marquis Spruill today, tweets Adam Caplan of ESPN.com.
  • Linebacker Nick Moody, cut by the 49ers yesterday, is headed to New York for a workout with the Giants, a source tells Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com (Twitter link).
  • Agent Brett Tessler says (via Twitter) that his client, guard Mike Liedtke, formerly of the Dolphins, is visiting the Jets today. Caplan notes (via Twitter) that the Jets also worked out wide receiver Shane Wynn, who will audition for the Titans this week as well.
  • Veteran offensive lineman Ben Garland, who has spent time with the Broncos in some capacity – either on the team’s roster or practice squad – for the last four seasons, was cut during Denver’s cutdown to 53 players this week. However, he’s drawing around interest around the league, according to Mike Klis of 9 News (Twitter link).
  • Running back Daniel “Boom” Herron was waived/injured by the Colts on the weekend, and isn’t a free agent quite yet. Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets that Herron suffered a sprained AC joint, which isn’t considered a serious injury. If he goes unclaimed on waivers, Herron will work out an injury settlement with the Colts and become a free agent.

Giants Sign Craig Dahl, Cut Stevie Brown

The Giants continue to tweak their secondary, replacing one safety with another as they prepare for their Week 1 contest against the Cowboys. According to Jordan Raanan of NJ.com (via Twitter), the Giants have signed ex-Niner Craig Dahl, cutting Stevie Brown to create room on the roster.

Dahl, 30, began his career with the Giants in 2007, and started 40 games at safety for the Rams between 2009 and 2012, spending time with Steve Spagnuolo at both stops. However, Dahl served mostly as a special-teamer in San Francisco after joining the 49ers in 2013. The Niners have a deep group of safeties this year, which made the veteran Dahl expendable — he was released earlier this week, and also drew interest from the Raiders.

In New York, Dahl will be a reserve on defense and figures to chip in on special teams as well. He’ll replace Brown, who just re-signed with the team last week, after being cut by the Texans. Brown reportedly received interest from a handful of clubs following his release from Houston, so he could draw some attention now that he’s available again.

NFC Notes: Washington, Powell, Jones

Despite a need at both tight end and outside linebacker, Washington has elected to remain patient with their roster. The team only kept two tight ends and four outside linebackers on the current version of their 53-man roster, and did not put a waiver claim in on any of the many players on the wire today at either position, writes Mike Jones of the Washington Post. However, Jones does expect the team to add to the position in the coming days if the opportunity arises.

Here are some more stories from around the NFL this Sunday:

  • Receiver Corey Washington has received an injury settlement with the Giants, who therefore released him from the injured reserve, reports Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News (via Twitter). Washington is now free to sign with any team.
  • The Saints have waived linebacker Ronald Powell with an injury settlement, according to Evan Woodbery of NOLA.com (via Twitter). Powell is only eligible to re-sign with the Saints after Week 6 plus the length of the settlement (via Twitter).
  • After signing James Jones, the Packers will have to cut a player to make room, writes Jason Wilde of ESPN.com (via Twitter). That player will not be Datone Jones, he adds, despite the rumors that Jones was on the chopping block. Jones is not on the current 53-man roster, because he is suspended for Week 1 (via Twitter). Wilde does mention Myles White as a possible candidate to be cut (via Twitter).

Sunday NFL Transactions: NFC East

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four NFC East teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Cowboys, Giants, Eagles, and Washington are noted below.

Additionally, as of 11:00am today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. For the 2014 and 2015 seasons, changes were made to practice squad rules that allow teams to carry eight players instead of 10, and the eligibility requirements for those extra two spots were also loosened. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

Giants Cut Kenrick Ellis

After claiming former Texans defensive tackle Louis Nix off waivers earlier today, the Giants have parted ways with a veteran at the same position, according to Mike Garafolo of FOX Sports (Twitter link), who reports that New York has cut Kenrick Ellis.

Ellis, 27, signed a one-year deal with the Giants earlier this year that included $500K in guarantees, so the club will absorb that same total in dead money for the upcoming season. As a reserve for the Jets during the first four years of his career, Ellis appeared in 47 games, starting five. But the Hampton alum didn’t do enough to impress over the summer, so the Giants will keep Nix and Jay Bromley at defensive tackle behind starters Jonathan Hankins and Cullen Jenkins.

The Bills could be one landing spot for Ellis, tweets Mike Rodak of ESPN.com, who notes that Buffalo only has six defensive lineman on its roster. Ellis obviously has a familiarity with Bills head coach Rex Ryan from the duo’s time with the Jets, so the fit could make some sense.

Giants Claim Asa Jackson, Louis Nix

The Giants have been awarded a pair of defensive players on waivers, according to Jordan Raanan of NJ.com, who reports (via Twitter) that the club has claimed former Ravens cornerback Asa Jackson and ex-Texans defensive tackle Louis Nix.

Jackson, 25, saw his first stretch of extended playing time on defense last season in Baltimore, when the Ravens’ secondary was decimated by injuries. Jackson started six games and allowed a quarterback rating of 106.6 on passes thrown into his coverage, per Pro Football Focus.

As for Nix, he was selected in the third round of the 2014 draft, but never saw regular season action for the team, having spent the majority of his rookie campaign on injured reserve.

The Giants will have to cut a pair of players as part of today’s transactions to accommodate the incoming additions.
