NFL Workout Updates: 9/23/16
As the NFL enters Week 3, clubs continue to audition players with an eye towards updating their emergency lists. Here are the latest workout notes from around the league:
- Two running backs (Zac Brooks and Gus Johnson) and three receivers (Mario Alford, Kenny Bell and Cayleb Jones) auditioned for the Browns on Friday, reports Adam Caplan of ESPN (Twitter links). The only member of the quintet with game experience is Alford, who saw action in one contest with the Bengals as a seventh-round rookie last year and caught a single pass.
- Running back Kenny Hilliard will try out for the Seahawks on Monday, tweets Wilson. Hilliard, formerly of LSU, went to Houston in the seventh round of last year’s draft. Hilliard didn’t garner any experience as a rookie with the Texans, who cut him Sept. 2.
- Cornerback Tye Smith and guard Darrelle Greene worked out for the Jets on Friday, per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle and Rich Cimini of ESPN.com (Twitter links). Smith, whom the Seahawks chose in the fifth round of last year’s draft, appeared in four games as a rookie. Seattle cut him from its practice squad Tuesday. Greene was previously with the Eagles, who axed him from their practice squad Wednesday.

Chargers Release James Jones
8:16pm: The Chargers have confirmed the move.
7:25pm: For the second year in a row, James Jones will be without a team as final cutdowns approach, as the veteran wide receiver has been released by the Chargers, a source tells Annie Heilbrun (Twitter link).
Jones, 32, sat on the free agent market until earlier this month, when he agreed to a one-year, minimum salary benefit deal with San Diego after fellow receiver Stevie Johnson was lost for the season. However, given that he signed so late in camp, Jones was never able to get comfortable with the Chargers’ offense, tweets Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Moreover, Jones figured to play behind Keenan Allen, Travis Benjamin, Tyrell Williams, and possibly Dontrelle Inman on San Diego’s depth chart.
Jones led the Packers in 2015 with 890 receiving yards off of 50 receptions. He also led Green Bay’s wide receivers with eight touchdowns. That was a different stat line than 2014, a year in which he corralled a career-high 73 receptions for just 666 yards and six touchdowns for the Raiders.
In other Chargers news, the club has claimed running back Gus Johnson off waivers from the Falcons, according to James Palmer of NFL.com (on Twitter).

Falcons Cut Ties With Renfree, Brown, Seven Others
The Falcons have trimmed their roster to 75 after having cut ties with nine players today (via ESPN.com’s Vaughn McClure on Twitter):
- QB Sean Renfree
- S Sergio Brown
- TE Arthur Lynch
- LB Ivan McLennan
- WR Jordan Leslie
- OL Michael Huey
- RB Gus Johnson
- CB Ryan White
- DL Brandon Williams
Renfree may be one of the more notable moves, if only because the transaction provides some clarity on the team’s quarterback depth chart. With Matt Ryan and Matt Schaub having a solid hold on the starter and back-up gig, it looks like veteran Matt Simms will ultimately make the team as the Falcons’ number-three signal-caller.
Brown is another notable subtraction, as the safety has played in at least ten games in each of his six seasons. The 28-year-old actually had one of his best seasons in 2015 with the Jaguars, compiling 38 tackles and 1.5 sacks. The veteran’s tenure in Atlanta was short, as he was signed by the team last week.
