Steelers Trim Roster To 53
The Steelers have reduced their roster to the league-mandated 53 players.
The following players have been cut:
- DT Lavon Hooks (Twitter link via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com)
- RB Brandon Brown–Dukes (Twitter link via Fowler)
- OG Shahbaz Ahmed
- OL Antoine Everett (Twitter link via Fowler)
- OL Matt Feiler (Twitter link via Fowler)
- OLB Travis Feeney (Twitter link via Fowler)
- DB Ray Vinopal (Twitter link via Fowler)
- DB Montell Garner (Twitter link via Fowler)
- WR DeMarcus Ayers
- WR Cobi Hamilton
- WR Marcus Tucker
- RB Cameron Stingily
- OL Wade Hansen
- CB Doran Grant
- CB Al-Hajj Shabazz
- CB Donald Washington
- DL Caushaud Lyons
- DL Johnny Maxey
- LB Steven Johnson
- LB Jermauria Rasco
- QB Bryn Renner
- TE Paul Lang (waived/injured)
As Fowler observes, the Steelers’ recent wave of offensive lineman cuts could be good news for B.J. Finney, who came into today firmly on the roster bubble. Feiler, like Feeney, is a practice squad candidate.
Hooks, an Ole Miss product, was signed by the Packers as a UDFA following the 2015 draft, but Green Bay cut him last August as part of the 75-man cutdown. He caught on with the Steelers in February, and at least made it to the final cutdown day, so that qualifies as progress.
Ahmed was part of the Falcons’ crop of UDFAs this year but was waived by Atlanta last month. The Temple product made the switch from defensive lineman to offensive lineman during his junior year, and he started 12 of 13 games at left guard for the feel-good Owls last year.

Minor NFL Transactions: 8/20/16
Here are today’s minor moves:
- With the Teddy Bridgewater sidelined by a minor shoulder issue, Shaun Hill taking a “veteran’s day” off practice, and Taylor Heinecke out for the time being with a foot injury, the Vikings were in need of another camp arm, and they’ve added one today. The club agreed to terms with Brad Sorensen, who was waived by the Chargers earlier this year, and cut running back Kevin Monangai, according to Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press.
- The Falcons announced that they’ve waived kicker Nick Rose, clearing a roster spot after signing veterans Shayne Graham and Sergio Brown earlier today.
Earlier updates:
- The Browns signed running back Jahwan Edwards, Nate Ulrich of Ohio.com reports. A second-year UDFA out of Ball State, Edwards spent time on the Dolphins, Falcons and Jaguars’ practice squads last season. Miami waived him just after the 2016 draft.
- Down Bruce Gradkowski to injury, the Steelers signed Bryn Renner, the team announced. The Steelers also added guard Antoine Everett, cut Christian Powell and waived/injured center Valerian Ume-Ezeoke. Renner spent two months with the Chargers earlier this year, but the Bolts’ claim of Zach Mettenberger resulted in the former North Carolina UDFA being jettisoned. The 26-year-old Renner spent much of 2015 with the Ravens, spending the offseason in Baltimore and, after being cut, catching on with the team’s practice squad in December.
Minor NFL Transactions: 4/29/16
In advance of day two of the 2016 NFL draft getting underway, here are Friday’s minor transactions from around the league:
- The Panthers opened the 2016 league year with only two defensive tackles under contract, but have been active in adding depth at the position in recent weeks. The latest addition to the team’s defensive line is Robert Thomas, who was cut by the Dolphins on Thursday — Carolina claimed him off waivers today, per Pro Football Talk (Twitter link).
- Linebacker A.J. Tarpley, who announced earlier in April that he has decided to retire due to concussion concerns, was officially waived by the Bills today, along with tight end Jacob Maxwell, the team announced (via Twitter).
- At the start of the week, the Browns announced that they had signed wide receiver Saalim Hakim. However, Hakim’s stint in Cleveland was short-lived. As Darin Gantt of Pro Football Talk writes, the Browns cut Hakim from their roster today.
- Perhaps clearing room to add a few extra undrafted free agents at the conclusion of the draft, the Buccaneers announced today that they’ve waived eight players from their 90-man roster. The players receiving their walking papers are as follows: wide receiver Andre Davis, linebacker Darius Eubanks, guard Antoine Everett, safety Gerod Holliman, defensive tackle Derrick Lott, safety Kimario McFadden, linebacker Jermauria Rasco and cornerback C.J. Roberts.

Minor Moves: Tuesday
Here are Tuesday’s minor transactions from around the NFL, with any additional moves added to the top of the list throughout the day:
- The Colts have waived wide receiver Josh Lenz, who has spent a good chunk of the last two seasons on Indianapolis’ practice squad, the team announced today in a press release. Lenz had signed a reserve/futures contract with the Colts following the club’s elimination from the postseason back in January.
- The Steelers have claimed former Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner, according to Field Yates of ESPN.com (on Twitter). Gardner was previously attempting to hook on with the Pats as a wide receiver before his release on Monday. To make room, the Steelers waived wide receiver L’Damian Washington, according to Steelers PR man Burt Lauten (on Twitter).
- The Chargers waived tackle Bryce Quigley, a San Diego State product, to create roster room for Joe Barksdale, Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego tweets.
- Another player who signed a reserve/futures deal with his team this past winter, running back Demitrius Bronson has been waived by the Seahawks with an injured designation, writes Curtis Crabtree of Pro Football Talk. Bronson, who was on Seattle’s taxi squad for most of the 2014 campaign, suffered a hamstring injury earlier in the offseason.
- The Buccaneers have signed UDFA Antoine Everett, according to Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com (on Twitter). To make room for the former McNeese St. guard, tight end Emmanuel Ogbuehi was waived with an injured designation.
- Wide receiver Malcome Kennedy cleared waivers and was placed on the Saints‘ IR, Evan Woodbery of The Times Picayune tweets.
- The Chiefs signed running back Keshawn Hill, guard Melvin Meggs, center Dan Munye, and tackle Kelvin Palmer, Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star tweets. To make room, KC cut fullback Manasseh Garner, tight end Earnest Pettway, and tackle Charles Sweeton.
