Bears Reduce Roster To 53 Players
The Bears trimmed their roster to the NFL’s mandatory 53-man limit today:
Released:
- OT Shon Coleman
- DT Trevon Coley
- DE Mario Edwards Jr. (released)
- S Davontae Harris
- TE James O’Shaughnessy (non-football illness designation)
- QB Nathan Peterman
- G Michael Schofield III
- CB Greg Stroman Jr.
Waived:
- TE Chase Allen
- WR Isaiah Coulter
- C/G Dieter Eiselen
- RB Darrynton Evans
- WR Chris Finke
- LB DeMarquis Gates
- CB Thomas Graham Jr.
- DE Sam Kamara
- G Lachavious Simmons
- DE Charles Snowden
- S A.J. Thomas
- DT Micah Dew-Treadway
- RB De’Montre Tuggle
- WR Nsimba Webster
Placed on IR:
- CB Tavon Young
Michael Schofield III is an experienced starter with more than 100 NFL games under his belt, but it was immediately clear that he was competing for a roster spot when he inked a deal worth only $1.12MM. He ultimately lost out on a starting gig in Chicago to Teven Jenkins, who was mentioned as a trade candidate only yesterday.
Sam Kamara got into eight games with Chicago in 2021 while mostly appearing on special teams. Nsimba Webster got into six games with the Bears last year, returning four punts for 13 yards. Both of these young players are candidates to return to Chicago’s practice squad to start the 2022 campaign.
Nathan Peterman is also expected to land back on the Bears’ practice squad, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport (on Twitter). After tossing three touchdowns vs. 12 interceptions in two seasons with Buffalo, Peterman spent the past three years with the Raiders, getting into only a pair of games. Justin Fields and Trevor Siemian are the only two QBs on the Bears active roster, so Peterman will see a promotion if either of those two are sidelined.
Bills Set 53-Man Roster
After waiving six players yesterday, the Bills cut 18 more players today to get themselves down to the 53-man roster limit:
Released:
- DT Eli Ankou (injury settlement)
- QB Matt Barkley
- WR Tanner Gentry
- TE O.J. Howard (story)
- RB Duke Johnson (story)
- OL Greg Mancz
Waived:
- OL Alec Anderson
- RB Raheem Blackshear
- DT C.J. Brewer
- DT Brandin Bryant
- DT Prince Emili
- LB Joe Giles-Harris
- WR Isaiah Hodgins
- DB Ja’Marcus Ingram
- DE Kingsley Jonathan
- DE Mike Love
- DB Nick McCloud
- OL Luke Tenuta
Placed on reserve/PUP:
- CB Tre’Davious White (story)
Placed on reserve/suspended:
- LB Andre Smith
We heard about some of Buffalo’s bigger moves earlier today, including the release of O.J. Howard and Duke Johnson. Greg Mancz is one of the most experienced players to get cut, with the veteran having appeared in 63 games across seven NFL seasons. His positional versatility was expected to land him a roster spot as a backup offensive lineman, but the team ultimately opted for a younger option. Mancz certainly didn’t help his case when he missed the preseason finale while recovering from a foot injury suffered during practice.
Tanner Gentry and Alec Anderson are both candidates to return to Buffalo via the practice squad. Gentry has bounced on and off the Bills roster over the previous two seasons without getting into a game. Anderson started 10 games at UCLA last year before landing with the Bills as an undrafted rookie.
Matt Barkley has spent the past four seasons in Buffalo. He got into eight games with the Bills between 2018 and 2020, completing 53 of his 97 pass attempts for 788 yards, three touchdowns, and four interceptions. He was demoted to QB3 in 2021 following the acquisition of Mitchell Trubisky, and Barkley didn’t end up seeing the field last year. He was eyeing a similar role in 2022 with Case Keenum now serving as Josh Allen‘s primary backup.
Panthers Trim Roster To 53 Players
The Panthers trimmed their roster to 53 players today, meaning a long list of players earned their walking papers:
Released:
Waived:
- TE Josh Babicz
- CB Kalon Barnes
- OL Deonte Brown
- CB Madre Harper
- CB Tae Hayes
- WR Ra’Shaun Henry
- DT Frank Herron
- OL Mike Horton
- DE Darryl Johnson
- DE Drew Jordan
- DE Austin Larkin
- RB John Lovett
- LB Arron Mosby
- WR Charleston Rambo
- S Kenny Robinson
- WR C.J. Saunders
- OL Sam Tecklenburg
- TE Colin Thompson
- LB Josh Watson
- WR Derek Wright
Waived/injured:
Placed on IR:
- K Zane Gonzalez (story)
- LB Julian Stanford
The most notable move was kicker Zane Gonzalez landing on injured reserve, making him ineligible to return for the 2022 campaign. Gonzalez injury himself on Friday night while warming up on the sideline. It was later revealed that he suffered a significant groin injury, and that injury ended up being season-ending. The Panthers worked out five potential replacements yesterday.
Juston Burris started 20 of his 23 games for the Panthers over the past two seasons. After collecting a career-high 53 tackles in 2020, the safety finished with only 23 tackles this past year, with Pro Football Focus ranking him 77th among 92 qualifying safeties. He was on the roster bubble following the offseason pickup of Xavier Woods. Brandon Zylstra has seen time in 37 games for the Panthers over the past three years, hauling in 29 receptions for 391 yards and one touchdown. Yesterday’s trade for Laviska Shenault Jr. only pushed him further down the depth chart, leading to his release.
Eagles To Release TE Richard Rodgers
Richard Rodgers‘ third stint in Philly has come to an end. Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer tweets that the Eagles are cutting the veteran tight end.
As a vested veteran, Rodgers would have had his entire salary guaranteed had he made the 53-man roster. There’s a chance the organization circles back to him once players land on injured reserve, but another contract would likely provide the organization with a bit more flexibility (perhaps via a practice squad spot).
Rodgers made a name for himself with the Packers, especially thanks to a 2015 campaign where he finished with 510 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. He joined the Eagles for his first go-around with the organization in 2018. While he’s had brief stints with Washington and Arizona over the past four seasons, his regular season appearances have only come in an Eagles uniform. He ultimately saw time in 25 games (four starts) with Philadelphia, with the majority of his production coming during a 2020 campaign where he hauled in 24 receptions for 345 yards and two touchdowns. The 30-year-old got into three games with the Eagles last season.
Rodgers was competing for a back-of-the-depth-chart role behind Dallas Goedert and Jack Stoll. This move likely secures a roster spot for rookie sixth-round pick Grant Calcaterra.
Titans Acquire OL Dennis Daley From Panthers
We’ve got another trade. The Titans have acquired offensive lineman Dennis Daley from the Panthers, according to Jim Wyatt of the Titans’ website (on Twitter). Daley and a 2024 seventh-round pick will be sent to Tennessee, with Carolina receiving a 2024 fifth-round pick.
A 2019 sixth-round selection, Daley has spent his entire three-year career with the Panthers. He started 21 of his 34 games for the organization, including a 2021 campaign where he started nine of his career-high 15 appearances. He ended up ranking 71st among 82 qualifying guards, per Pro Football Focus, although the site was much more favorable of his performance in 2020.
The 26-year-old was ultimately the odd man out in a crowded OL room. Earlier today, Ellis Williams of the Charlotte Observer wrote that Cameron Erving could actually be the Panthers lineman on the trade block, but at least for the time being, the veteran will be staying put. This is the second trade the Panthers have pulled off today after acquiring wideout Laviska Shenault from the Jaguars.
Daley’s ability to play both guard and tackle should make him a useful piece in Tennessee. The new lineman could end up squeezing one of Corey Levin, Jamarco Jones, or Jordan Roos off the roster.
Cardinals To Release LB Devon Kennard
The Cardinals are releasing a veteran linebacker. The team is cutting Devon Kennard, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport (via Twitter).
Despite starting only seven of his 28 games since joining the Cardinals, Kennard was expected to start in 2022. Markus Golden and Dennis Gardeck have since secured the starting outside linebacker spots, and instead of holding on to a veteran to back up the duo, the Cardinals will be pivoting to a younger option. That group includes a pair of third-round rookies: Cameron Thomas and Myjai Sanders.
Kennard inked a three-year deal with the Cardinals in 2020. In his two seasons with the organization, the linebacker collected 43 tackles and three sacks. The 31-year-old didn’t play enough snaps in 2021 to qualify for Pro Football Focus’ rankings, but his grade would have placed within the top-20, and he would have earned a top-1o mark for his run defense.
The former fifth-round pick spent the first four seasons of his career with the Giants before moving to Detroit in 2018. He spent two seasons with the Lions, collecting 104 tackles and 14 sacks.
Panthers Work Out Five Kickers
Zane Gonzalez was injured on the sideline during Friday’s preseason contest, and the Panthers are now eyeing some reinforcement at kicker. According to Aaron Wilson of ProFootballNetwork.com (on Twitter), the Panthers worked out kickers Taylor Bertolet, Brian Johnson, Chase McLaughlin, Eddy Pineiro, and Matthew Wright.
After seeing time in 15 games across two seasons with five different teams, McLaughlin got a chance to be the Browns’ full-time kicker in 2021. He converted 15 of his 21 field goal attempts and 36 of his 37 extra point attempts. With Cleveland selecting Cade York in the fourth round of the draft, McLaughlin was ultimately cut back in May.
Wright got into 14 games for the Jaguars last year, connecting on 21 of his 24 field goal attempts and 13 of his 15 XP tries. After converting 82.1 percent of his FG attempts in 16 games with the Bears in 2021, Pineiro saw time in five games with the Jets last year. He made all eight of his field goal attempts and nine of his 10 extra point attempts.
Johnson appeared in seven games between New Orleans and Washington last year, connecting on all 10 of his field goal attempts (but only nine of his 13 extra point tries). Bertolet, an undrafted free agent back in 2016, has spent time with five NFL teams but hasn’t seen time in a regular season game.
Gonzalez injury himself on Friday night while warming up on the sideline. It was later revealed that he suffered a significant groin injury, with Ellis Williams of the Charlotte Observer writing that it could be a season-ending injury.
Saints OT Trevor Penning Tears Ligament In Foot
2:35pm: More testing revealed bad news for the rookie. Penning suffered a ligament tear in his injured foot, and Rapoport adds surgery will be necessary (Twitter link). The player the Saints eyed as a long-term left tackle will not be beginning his season on time and will be out indefinitely.
9:28am: It sounds like Saints first-round pick Trevor Penning is going to miss some time. The offensive lineman suffered a “bad case of turf toe” during last night’s preseason finale, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport (on Twitter).
Penning is set to undergo an MRI to determine the severity of the injury. Rapoport hints that the offensive tackle will miss at least a game or two to start the season. We’ll likely get more clarity on his roster status (and whether he’ll land on injured reserve) once the Saints cut down their roster to 53 players.
The offensive tackle got into 10 snaps last night before suffering the injury. According to Charean Williams of ProFootballTalk.com, Penning suffered the injury when tight end Juwan Johnson accidentally hit the back of his leg during Mark Ingram‘s one-year touchdown run. Penning walked to the sidelined before getting carted to the locker room.
The Northern Iowa product was selected by the Saints with the 19th-overall pick in this year’s draft, and he was expected to replace the departed Terron Armstead in the starting lineup. The rookie made headlines during training camp when he got into fights with teammates for three consecutive days. Pro Football Focus showed him taking a major step in New Orleans’ second preseason game, but the latest injury may have cost him his early-season opportunity to snag the starting gig. James Hurst has been listed atop the Saints depth chart at LT throughout the preseason, and while the veteran is dealing with his own foot injury, he’s a good bet to earn the starting nod with Penning temporarily out of the picture.
Panthers QB Sam Darnold Expected To Miss Four To Six Weeks
Sam Darnold will miss at least a handful of regular season games, if not the first month of the season. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport (on Twitter), the Panthers backup quarterback is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks with a high-ankle sprain.

Darnold exited last night’s game after Bills defensive tackle C.J. Brewer rolled over the QB’s ankle. The injury looked severe, with ESPN’s David Newton tweeting that Darnold’s lucky his ankle isn’t broken. Instead, Darnold is dealing with a high-ankle sprain that will sideline him for at least a month, and the injury could ultimately necessitate a trip to injured reserve.
While recently-named starting QB Baker Mayfield appears to be healthy heading into the regular season, the rest of the Panthers QB room is banged up. Darnold joins rookie Matt Corral, who is out for the season after suffering a Lisfranc injury, on the shelf. This means P.J. Walker, who was once believed to be on the roster bubble, is the team’s temporary backup quarterback. The Panthers entered the preseason believing they’d be rostering three QBs (Mayfield, Darnold, Corral), and with the team down to only two healthy arms, it remains to be seen how the depth chart will look come Week 1. A lot of it depends on the health of Darnold, according to head coach Matt Rhule.
“We’ll have to wait and see,” Rhule said about making any additions (via Newton). “Sam’s a tough kid. He usually comes back really quickly. I’d say nothing’s off the table.”
Speaking of the team’s now-depleted depth at quarterback, Rhule was also asked about the possibility of adding former MVP Cam Newton back to the group.
“You guys know my feelings on Cam, but probably too early to say anything about that,” Rhule said (via Joseph Person of The Athletic on Twitter).
After spending the 2020 season in New England, Newton returned to Carolina last season and started five games.
Ravens S Chuck Clark Requested Trade
Chuck Clark has been mentioned as a trade candidate throughout the offseason, and it sounds like the veteran safety would welcome a move. Following an offseason that saw Baltimore make two major commitments at safety, Clark acknowledged that he asked the organization for a trade following the NFL Draft in April.

“Me personally, I just felt the situation that I was in, how things were going, of course, yeah I did ask, ‘Can I get out of here?'” Clark said (via NFL.com’s Kevin Patra). “And so, I felt like that didn’t happen and I wasn’t just going to give away my spot. If I’m not going to be a starter, it’s going to have to be taken from me.”
The Ravens signed Marcus Williams to a five-year, $70MM deal, and they selected safety Kyle Hamilton with the 14th-overall pick in the draft. Naturally, Clark thought he was at risk of losing his starting spot, and it sounds like that was the motivation for making his trade request.
The 27-year-old has spent his entire career in Baltimore, and he’s made 44 starts for the team over the past three years. That includes a 2021 campaign where Clark started 16 games while compiling 80 tackles, 12 passes defended, and a pair of interceptions.Pro Football Focus ended up ranking him 41st among 92 qualifying safeties.
Despite the request, Clark still attended offseason workouts and has been a full participant throughout training camp and the preseason. Plus, since the Ravens have the luxury of bringing Hamilton along slowly thanks to their depth, it sounds like Clark could remain a starter for at least another season.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen moving forward, but I think that what you all have seen so far is how everyone has been in place,” Clark said. “There was definitely a time I didn’t know what was going to happen, honestly. And whatever was to come with that was going to come. At one point I did feel that way, but now that I’m out here with my team, man, I’m just like … I’m here, I’m locked in. They’re going to get what I got for right now. So, whatever comes in the future, that’s what’s going to come.”
Clark still has two years remaining on the three-year, $16MM extension he signed in 2020.
