Chargers Place CB Brandon Flowers On IR

The season is over for Brandon Flowers. The Chargers announced that the cornerback has been placed on injured reserve. Flowers is now the 18th member of the Bolts to be placed on IR this season. Brandon Flowers (vertical)

Flowers appeared in six games this season, totaling 28 tackles, six tackles for loss, five passes defensed and one interception which he returned for a touchdown against the Titans. Unfortunately, he suffered a pretty serious concussion in the Week 10 game against the Dolphins. This was not the first concussion of Flowers’ career and not even the first of the season. Given his history of head trauma, the Chargers are choosing to play it safe with the veteran.

Flowers’ season ends with him ranked as the No. 48 cornerback in the NFL by Pro Football Focus, albeit in a six-game season. His 76.6 overall grade is a big improvement over the dreadful 35.8 score he earned last year.

In related moves, the Chargers signed defensive tackle Kaleb Eulls to the active roster and added defensive tackle Chuka Ndulue to the practice squad.

Adrian Peterson Returns To Practice

He’s back. Adrian Peterson is on the field practicing with the Vikings this morning, the team announced. The Vikings now have a three-week window to evaluate how Peterson practices before deciding his status. He is now officially the team’s designated player to return from IR.Adrian Peterson (vertical)

Peterson, the Vikes’ all-time leading rusher, has been recovering from a torn meniscus he suffered against the Packers in Week 2. He recently said that he would only return to the Vikings if they were in the playoff hunt and they kept their chances alive on Sunday with a win over the Jaguars.

As the Vikings make their playoff push, they could certainly use Peterson. The question is, which Peterson will they see on the field? Will it be the Peterson who was unstoppable down the stretch of the 2015 season, or will it be the very below-average Peterson that started the 2016 season with 31 carries for just 50 yards? It would be easy to doubt Peterson given how mediocre he looked early on in the year, but he has been counted out before and has always proved the doubters wrong.

The Vikings face the Colts this Sunday, but Peterson has said that he is eyeing the Green Bay game on Christmas Eve for his return.

For his career, the three-time NFL rushing champ and 2012 MVP has 11,725 yards and 97 rushing touchdowns on 2,412 carries (4.9 yards per carry).

NFC South Notes: Saints, Brees, Alford, Falcons

It’s now 2017 or bust for the Saints‘ power trio of Drew Brees, coach Sean Payton, and GM Mickey Loomis, ESPN.com’s Mike Triplett opines. The Saints have shown gradual improvement over the past two years, but they’re now on pace for their third straight losing season and patience is wearing thin amongst fans. With Drew Brees signed to a one-year extension through 2017 that will really hamper them in ’18, the Saints are poised to go “all-in” next year, but they’ll have to get things right in free agency. In recent years, high-priced additions like safety Jairus Byrd, cornerback Brandon Browner, running back C.J. Spiller, tight end Coby Fleener, and linebacker James Laurinaitis have flopped.

More from the NFC South:

  • Under the terms of Robert Alford‘s four-year extension with the Falcons, the fourth-year cornerback will receive $21MM guaranteed — $12MM of that is fully guaranteed at signing, while the remaining $9MM becomes fully guaranteed on February 10, 2017, according to Adam Caplan of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Because Alford is extremely unlikely to be cut before next spring, that $21MM total is “effectively” guaranteed, and would tie Alford for ninth among corners in terms of guaranteed money.
  • Offensive lineman Avery Young‘s practice window has expired, meaning the Saints will not be able to activate him from the non-football injury list for the remainder of the season, reports Nick Underhill of the Advocate (Twitter link). As Underhill tweeted last week, New Orleans has agreed to pay Young $10K per week while he’s on NFI. Technically, clubs are not required to compensate players on NFI, but most teams work out deals to pay sidelined players at a lower rate.

AFC East Notes: Blount, Patriots, Jets

Three running backs have proven to be tremendous values for their respective teams this year, Will Eddowes of Over The Cap writes. That list includes Patriots tailback LeGarrette Blount, who is earning just $1MM on a one-year deal with $100K in full guarantees + $1MM in incentives. The Patriots have been leaning more on the run game this year than they have in recent seasons and that’s partially because of Blount’s effectiveness. The question now is whether the Patriots can retain him for next season. Blount has certainly earned himself a pay raise but the Patriots often prefer to replace free agents with cheaper options. Darren Sproles of the Eagles and Theo Riddick of the Lions are also highlighted as strong values.

Here’s a look at the AFC East:

  • Re-signing Brian Winters should be the Jets‘ top priority this offseason, Connor Hughes of NJ.com writes. After a rough first two years in the NFL, Winters has improved now that he has moved from left guard to right guard. So far this year, he ranks as one of Pro Football Focus’ best interior offensive linemen and he has been a bright spot in an otherwise dreary year for Gang Green. The Jets are going to have to get themselves new offensive tackles and they could be in the market for a center, but the 25-year-old is a player that must be kept. For his part, Winters wants to stay. “100 percent,” Winters said when asked if he wants to return. “I love what has been going on here. I would love to continue to play here. I’ve built something here. I don’t want to leave it.
  • Bills running back Mike Gillislee has signed with NFL agent Ron Butler, as Liz Mullen of Sports Business Journal tweets. He was formerly repped by Global Sports Advisors. Gillislee has shown potential as the primary backup to LeSean McCoy in Buffalo. He will be eligible for free agency after the season is over. For now, he’s on the books for just $600K.
  • Yesterday was the Dolphins‘ deadline for activating Dion Jordan and they declined to put him on the 53-man roster. Miami also shut Mike Pouncey down for the season while adding quarterback T.J. Yates.

Extra Points: Salary Cap, NFL D-League, Rams

NFL teams were informed this week that the the per-team salary cap for 2017 is projected to be $166MM to $170MM, Tom Pelissero of USA Today Sports tweets. That’s an increase from the $155.27MM cap figure this year. A previous report indicated that the cap would range from $163MM-$165MM, but it appears that league revenue will push that number even higher.

10 Coaching Candidates For The Rams

In an iconic scene from season nine of The SimpsonsKrusty the Klown announced his retirement to a scrum of not-so-stunned reporters. Krusty The Clown

But Krusty,” one reporter asks. “Why now? Why not twenty years ago?

It wouldn’t have been out of place for any Rams beat reporter to channel that sentiment and ask a similar question of COO Kevin Demoff when he addressed the media on Monday. Jeff Fisher‘s dismissal was long overdue and you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone outside of the coach’s family who disagrees.

For now, the Rams will turn things over to special teams coordinator John Fassel on an interim basis. While this is ostensibly a chance for Fassel to impress team brass and land the head coaching job for 2017, most are expecting the Rams to hire a name brand coach that will energize the fan base and give the team some additional panache in free agency.

With a few weeks to go between now and the official end of the Rams’ season, here are ten names that could be considered for the job:

Jim Harbaugh (vertical)Jim Harbaugh, head coach at the University of Michigan: Some say that living well is the best revenge. Others say that the best revenge against your former employer is setting up shop across the street and destroying them. Santa Clara-to-Los Angeles is a lengthy drive, but you get what we’re getting at.

Harbaugh, in theory, could leave his alma mater and crush the 49ers by joining up with a divisional rival. The Rams have reportedly been loafing in practice and Harbaugh is the kind of throwback disciplinarian that the team badly needs. It’s fair to assume that the Rams will get in contact with Harbaugh, but it will be tough to get him to leave his lucrative job in Ann Arbor.

With National Signing Day around the corner, Harbaugh could publicly remove himself himself from consideration if he is not at all interested in an NFL return. Alternatively, if Harbaugh wants to get sweet revenge against the Niners, Stan Kroenke better have his checkbook ready. Signing Harbaugh could cost upwards of $10MM/year and that’s before factoring in his buyout clause with the Wolverines. If Harbaugh bolts, he’ll owe U-M the prorated portion of his $2MM signing bonus. With two of the seven years served, 5/7ths of that amount comes out to roughly $1.43MM.

Dolphins Won’t Activate Dion Jordan

Today, the Dolphins shut Mike Pouncey down for the season in order to free up a spot for quarterback T.J. Yates. Today was also the deadline for the Dolphins to find a place for embattled defensive end Dion Jordan. That afternoon deadline has come and gone and the team has opted against putting Jordan on the roster, Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald tweetsDion Jordan (vertical)

Teams have three weeks to make a determination on an NFI list player once he begins practicing. Apparently, the former No. 3 overall pick did not show enough in practice to warrant consideration for the final stretch of the season. Jordan and his reps spent the summer telling everyone that he would fulfill his potential in 2016. Now, we’ll have to wait another year to find out if Jordan can put it all together.

Through 26 games in 2013 and 2014, Jordan registered only 46 tackles and three sacks. He has not appeared in an NFL game since December 28, 2014.

Bengals Cut Mike Nugent, Claim Randy Bullock

The Bengals are making a change at kicker. The team announced that Mike Nugent has been dropped in favor of free agent Randy Bullock, whom Cincinnati claimed off waivers from Pittsburgh.Mike Nugent (Vertical)

The NFL extended the distance of the extra point this year and Nugent hasn’t adapted well. On Sunday, Nugent missed his sixth XP of the season and also went 1-of-2 on field goal tries. For the year, he has made 23 of his 29 attempts, which is more or less in line with his career field goal percentage. Still, the PAT issue was maddening for Cincinnati and they’re moving on to another veteran. Nugent leaves the Bengals as the team’s third-leading scorer of all-time.

Bullock now gets a three-game audition for the Bengals, or perhaps another team that would be interested in him for 2017. Bullock, 26, was the Giants’ kicker during their season opener as Josh Brown served his one-game suspension. Recently, he served as the Steelers’ place kicker while Chris Boswell was out of action.

Cowboys Officially Activate Darren McFadden

Finally, Darren McFadden is back in the Cowboys’ lineup. The team announced that he is being activated from the reserve/NFI list. To make room, rookie running back Darius Jackson has been let go. Darren McFadden (Vertical)

McFadden will now be available for the Cowboys’ Week 15 game against the Buccaneers. Ezekiel Elliott obviously remains the No. 1 back in Dallas, but McFadden could get carries if the team decides to rest the star rookie heading into the playoffs. McFadden could also chip away at Alfred Morris‘ workload. McFadden, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2008 draft, was the NFL’s fourth-leading rusher in 2015.

Somebody had to go in order to make room for McFadden, but the decision to drop Jackson is a bit surprising. The Cowboys will probably look to re-sign the sixth-round pick out of Eastern Michigan to the practice squad if he goes unclaimed, but that’s far from a certainty.

Ravens Release Devin Hester

One of the greatest kick returners of all-time is out of work. The Ravens announced that they have released Devin Hester. Michael Campanaro will be promoted from practice squad and serve as the team’s new returner. The Ravens also placed running back Lorenzo Taliaferro on injured reserve and signed inside linebacker Lamar Louis"<strong

Hester was a late addition to the Ravens’ roster, joining the club on Sept. 4. The 34-year-old averaged 24.5 yards per kick return and 7.2 yards per attempt on punt returns. Lately, however, he has struggled to field kicks. Last night, he made a costly decision to not field a punt and it would up resulting in a safety.

The veteran could be a fit for the Patriots, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter) speculates.
