Contract Details: Foles, Carr, Poe, Cowboys
Here’s a fun fact from Albert Breer of The MMQB (Twitter links): Of the 155 free-agent contracts that have been filed since March 9, only 23 have more than $3MM fully guaranteed in post-2017 money. In essence, that means 85.2% of the contracts done over the last ten days are one-year deals with team options.
Now for the latest contract details:
- Cornerback Brandon Carr‘s four-year, $23MM Ravens contract comes with $6MM in 2017 – most of which is by way of a $4MM signing bonus – and then the Ravens will have a 2018 team option, reports Breer (on Twitter).
- Falcons defensive tackle Dontari Poe‘s one-year, $8MM accord features a $500K signing bonus and incentives for playing time, sacks and a Pro Bowl appearance (Twitter link via Breer).
- Quarterback Nick Foles‘ previously reported two-year, $11MM deal with the Eagles is actually a five-year, $27.5MM pact, according to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe. However, the final three years of the contract will void if Foles is still on Philadelphia’s roster 23 days before the start of the 2019 league year. The arrangement comes with $5MM in incentives and an esclator for 2018 worth as much as $6MM (Twitter links).
- Panthers defensive tackle Kyle Love‘s two-year contract is worth $2.2MM and features a few bonuses – $200K for signing, $25K for workouts and $10K per game active – as well as $500K in annual incentives, tweets Wilson.
- Cowboys running back Darren McFadden‘s one-year contract is a minimum salary benefit deal worth $980K (a salary of $900K and an $80K signing bonus). Guard Jonathan Cooper‘s single-year accord is worth $2MM and has a $31,250 bonus per game active, $500K in incentives and a $100K workout base de-esclator (Twitter links via Wilson).
- Cardinals running back/wide receiver Andre Ellington will earn a $775K base salary on his one-year agreement, tweets Mike Jurecki of FOX Sports 910.
- Redskins defensive tackle Ziggy Hood’s two-year, $2.7MM deal includes a $300K signing bonus, per-game active bonuses of $15,625 each, $600K in incentives and a $600K escalator. Meanwhile, the Redskins gave linebacker Chris Carter a minimum salary benefit deal worth $855K, including $775K in salary and a signing bonus of $80K, relays Wilson (Twitter links).
- Saints running back Travaris Cadet also got a minimum salary benefit contract for 2017, says Wilson (Twitter link). It’s worth $855K ($775K in salary and an $80K signing bonus).

Ravens Sign CB Brandon Carr
Brandon Carr is off the board. The Ravens have signed the former Cowboys cornerback to a four-year deal, according to a team announcement.
However, that doesn’t tell the whole story. It’s really a one-year deal with series of options to make it a four-year, $24MM, Adam Schefter of ESPN.com tweets. It will likely turn out to be a two-year, $12MM deal when all is said and done, he adds. Soon, we’ll probably know the full breakdown of the contract.
The Ravens have been heavily connected to Morris Claiborne, but they’ve instead signed Dallas’ other notable free agent cornerback. Carr, 31 in May, has started in every single regular season game for Dallas since joining the club in 2012. In fact, his ironman streak goes back further than that. He also made every single possible start for the Chiefs from 2008-2011.
Carr first came to Dallas on a five-year, $50.1MM pact in 2012. He never lived up to that deal – and had to take a hefty pay cut in 2016 to stay with the Cowboys as a result – but he has still be a serviceable player. In 2016, Carr graded out as the leagues No. 52 cornerback among 114 qualifiers, per Pro Football Focus. He appeared in 96% of Dallas’ defensive snaps.
Carr was ranked as our No. 2 cornerback left in free agency heading into today. Claiborne, Nickell Robey-Coleman, Darrelle Revis, and Brandon Flowers are among the notables that remain.
The Jets were once linked to Carr, but their level of interest was unclear.
Ravens Haven't Reached Out To Nick Mangold
The Ravens traded center Jeremy Zuttah earlier today, but they haven’t made contact with free agent pivot Nick Mangold as of yet, tweets Jeff Zriebec of the Baltimore Sun. Instead, Baltimore is likely to turn over center to internal option John Urschel, or look for another free agent on the open market. While contending clubs were expected to pursue Mangold, he hasn’t drawn any known interest so far this offseason. Teams are reportedly asking the 33-year-old if he’s willing to shift to guard.
Ravens Offering Morris Claiborne $5MM?
The Ravens are offering free agent cornerback Morris Claiborne roughly $5MM per year, according to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com. At present, it’s unclear how many years Baltimore is proposing on a potential contract.
Claiborne was first linked to the Ravens last week, while a subsequent report indicated most clubs believe Claiborne will eventually end up in Baltimore. Claiborne would join Jimmy Smith in the Ravens’ starting lineup, allowing second-year pro Tavon Young to remain in the slot. Baltimore’s secondary also contains Kyle Arrington, Maurice Canady, and Sheldon Price, while Lardarius Webb — who is now a safety but can still play in the slot — may be re-signed after being cut loose last week.
Claiborne, 26, transformed himself from a former draft bust to a legitimate top corner in his fifth NFL season, ranking as Pro Football Focus 12th-best corner last year year. Re-signed to a one-year deal worth only $3MM in 2016, Claiborne played in seven and posted one interception. Injuries forced Claiborne to miss more than half of the regular season, though he did return for the postseason.
Ravens Trade C Jeremy Zuttah To 49ers
The Ravens have traded center Jeremy Zuttah to the 49ers, according to a team announcement. In the deal, the two teams will swap sixth-round picks. The Ravens will move up 12 picks late in the draft. The Ravens get pick No. 186 from the 49ers and San Francisco takes Baltimore’s pick No. 198.
The Ravens initially planned to release Zuttah, but the Ravens were able to work out a trade instead. This happens from time to time in the NFL – a team notifies a player of his release, word leaks out, and a team receives a phone call from an interested club before the transaction becomes official. Now, the 49ers get Zuttah without having to compete with other interested teams.
Zuttah is not a superstar, but he is a solid center with starting experience. The Rutgers product has been a starter for Baltimore for the last three seasons. In 2016, the advanced numbers Pro Football Focus placed Zuttah as the 13th best center in the league. His 82.7 score was his best showing since his rookie campaign.
Ravens Cut C Jeremy Zuttah
UPDATE: The Ravens have traded Zuttah to the 49ers.
The Ravens are releasing center Jeremy Zuttah, according to Aditi Kinkhabwala of NFL.com (on Twitter). Zuttah has been a starter for Baltimore for the last three years.
By cutting Zuttah, the Ravens will save $2.392MM in cap space. They’re also going to need a new center though some of the best options, like new Browns addition J.C. Tretter, are off the board. Veteran Nick Mangold is among the bigger names still available, but he’s not the player he used to be. Multiple teams, reportedly, have asked him to switch positions and that’s not a great sign. Alternatively, the Ravens could fill the void from within by putting John Urschel in the starting role.
Zuttah, 31 in June, started in all 16 games for the Ravens last season. Generally, he has had a pretty good attendance record over the course of his nine-year career with the exception of 2015 when he missed six regular season contests. Last year, Pro Football Focus rated Zuttah as the 13th best center in the NFL. His 82.7 score was his best showing since his rookie season (86.7).
Ravens Withdraw Tenders
- The Ravens have withdrawn their restricted free agent tenders to cornerback Jumal Rolle and safety Marqueston Huff, reports Adam Caplan of ESPN.com (Twitter link). Both players were tendered at the original round level ($1.797MM), but those tenders are non-guaranteed. As such, Rolle and Huff are now unrestricted free agents, and Baltimore has cleared about $3.6MM in cap room.
Ravens May Re-Sign Lardarius Webb
The Ravens are mulling a reunion with defensive back Lardarius Webb just days after releasing him, tweets Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com. Additionally, Baltimore may be closing in on agreement with free agent cornerback Morris Claiborne, as several teams with interest in Claiborne believe he’ll ultimately land with the Ravens, per La Canfora.
Baltimore cut ties with Webb on Friday after agreeing to terms with fellow safety Tony Jefferson, a cost-saving move that saved the club $5.5MM in cap space. Presumably, a potential Webb return would come with a lower price attached. Webb had spent his entire eight-year career in Baltimore appearing in 111 total games with 82 starts. Last season, the 31-year-old finished with 73 tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble in 16 games (all starts).
Claiborne, meanwhile, was first linked to the Ravens last week. The 26-year-old transformed himself from a former draft bust to a legitimate top corner in his fifth NFL season, ranking as Pro Football Focus 12th-best corner last year year. Re-signed to a one-year deal worth only $3MM in 2016, Claiborne played in seven and posted one interception. Injuries forced Claiborne to miss more than half of the regular season, though he did return for the postseason.
Woodhead Signing Wasn't Based On Dixon Suspension
- The Ravens‘ decision to sign free agent running back Danny Woodhead to a three-year deal was not a response to Kenneth Dixon‘s four-game PED suspension, general manager Ozzie Newsome told reporters, Jeff Zriebec of the Baltimore Sun. “We’ve known about Kenneth for a long time, but yes, we needed to add another element to our offense, and Danny brings that from the backfield, and we’re still working to try to do some other things at receiver and maybe offensive line,” Newsome said. “But yes, he still would have been a big part of our conversation. We still would have signed him.” Woodhead’s new deal is worth $8.8MM and contains $4.25MM guaranteed.

Contract Details For Jefferson, Woodhead
- Danny Woodhead, RB (Ravens): Three years, $8.8MM. $4.25MM guaranteed. $1.75MM cap number for 2017 (Twitter links via Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun). As Ian Rapoport of NFL.com observes (via Twitter), that represents a sizeable investment for a running back in this market. Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports tweets that Woodhead gets a $2.5MM signing bonus.
- Tony Jefferson, S (Ravens): Four years, $34MM (max value of $37MM). $19MM guaranteed. $5.5MM cap number for 2017 (Twitter links via Zrebiec). La Canfora tweets that Jefferson gets a $10MM signing bonus.
