Allen Hurns Has Interest From Seven Teams
Appearing on Charlotte’s WFNZ following his release from the Jaguars earlier today, free agent wide receiver Allen Hurns said he’s received interest from the Bears, Bills, Saints, Texans, Jets, Raiders, and Panthers, according to Joel Erickson of the Advocate.
A number of those clubs have already added significant help at the wideout position this offseason. Chicago signed both Allen Robinson and Taylor Gabriel, Oakland replaced Michael Crabtree with Jordy Nelson and are now meeting with Eric Decker, and Carolina signed Jarius Wright and acquired Torrey Smith. Other teams, such as Buffalo, New Orleans, and Houston, have done little to address their pass-catching needs.
Hurns is only 26 years old, but he hasn’t had much success since the 2015 campaign. During that season, Hurns served as the Jaguars’ No. 2 receiver behind Allen Robinson and posted a 64/1,031/10 line. Since then, Hurns’ role in the Jacksonville offense has been drastically scaled back, while injuries have also limited him. He failed to top 500 yards receiving in either 2016 or 2017.
Hurns’ first free agent visit is expected to take place with the Jets on Wednesday.
Jaguars To Release Marcedes Lewis
Marcedes Lewis is hitting the free agent market. The Jaguars will release the tight end after 12 seasons with the team, according to Mark Long of the AP (on Twitter).

The moves comes as a surprise since the Jaguars exercised their 2018 option for Lewis in late February. Then again, their March signing of Austin Seferian-Jenkins made Lewis less of a priority and new pickup Niles Paul crowds the depth chart somewhat. Paul now figures to serve as ASJ’s primary understudy with Ben Koyack, James O’Shaughnessy, and David Grinnage vying for the No. 3 TE role.
“I think I deserved a little better than I got,” Lewis said of the release (Twitter link). “I wish they would have done it sooner.”
Lewis’ $3.5MM salary for this season was not guaranteed, so the release will not leave any dead money on Jacksonville’s cap. He leaves the team with the third most games played in franchise history. It wasn’t always fun times for Lewis as the 2017 campaign marked just the second winning campaign he’s experienced in his career.
Even though he’ll turn 34 in May, Lewis figures to find a healthy market for his services. Last year, Pro Football Focus ranked him as the league’s best run blocker, edging out Patriots star Rob Gronkowski.
Jaguars Release WR Allen Hurns
The Jaguars are releasing wide receiver Allen Hurns, a source tells Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). The move comes as a surprise since Hurns has been a regularly featured player for Jacksonville over the past four seasons.

Hurns was midway through a four-year extension worth roughly $40MM with $20MM in guaranteed money. Those guarantees were paid down over the first two years of the deal, so the Jaguars will carry no dead money while saving $7MM against the 2018 cap.
Last year, injuries limited Hurns to just ten games. He has missed eleven games since 2016 and that was likely a factor in Jacksonville’s decision to let him go.
Although a great deal of cap room has already been spent around the league, there are still dollars out there for someone like Hurns in the second wave of free agency. The Jets, for example, still have $40MM to work with and continue to scour the free agent market for help at wide receiver.
The Jaguars, who mounted an impressive run to the AFC title game, will return with a revamped group of wide receivers in 2018. Star Allen Robinson, who missed the majority of the 2017 season, left in free agency to sign a lucrative deal with the Bears. Meanwhile, it appears that new pickup Donte Moncrief will serve as the team’s No. 2 WR behind Marqise Lee as he replaces Hurns on the depth chart. New tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins also figures to see a lot of passes thrown in his direction.

Chiefs Sign QB Chad Henne
The Chiefs are signing quarterback Chad Henne to a two-year deal, a source tells Mike Garafolo of NFL.com (on Twitter). Henne, 33 in July, will serve as the No. 2 QB behind Patrick Mahomes. 
The Chiefs have been on the lookout for a backup/mentor to pair with Mahomes. They had interest in signing Chase Daniel to fill that role, but he wound up joining the Bears on a two-year deal worth $10MM with $7MM guaranteed.
Kansas City may have preferred Daniel for the job, but Henne comes with more in-game experience. Daniel has only two starts in his entire NFL career and none since 2014. Henne, meanwhile, boasts 53 career starts, though he also hasn’t made a start since ’14.
The last time Henne saw consistent playing time was 2013, when he completed 60.6% of his passes for 3,241 yards and 13 touchdowns against 14 interceptions.
Jaguars To Host TE Luke Willson
The Jaguars will meet with free agent tight end Luke Willson on Friday, according to Adam Caplan of SiriusXM (Twitter link). Despite signing both Niles Paul and Austin Seferian-Jenkins, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo tweets that the team is still interested in adding another player at the position. After all, “they love tight ends,” a source told Garafolo.
The 2013 fifth-round pick had spent his entire career with the Seahawks, earning himself a Super Bowl championship along the way. The 28-year-old wrapped up the 2017 season having hauled in 15 receptions for 153 yards and a career-high four touchdowns. Pro Football Focus ranked Willson 43rd among 71 tight end candidates, but the site was fond of his run-blocking skills.
We learned earlier this week that Willson was set to visit with the Panthers.
Jaguars To Sign Austin Seferian-Jenkins
Austin Seferian-Jenkins has a new home. The tight end will sign with the Jaguars, according to Dianna Russini of ESPN.com (on Twitter).
This will be a two-year agreement worth $10MM, per Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). A $1MM incentive package also appears to be included in the deal.
Seferian-Jenkins, a former second-round pick of the Bucs, never lived up to his potential with Tampa Bay. After bouncing back from substance abuse issues, he put together a productive season with the Jets, catching 50 passes for 357 yards and three touchdowns. Two more TDs were overturned on controversial reversals.
ASJ was seeking a slightly more lucrative deal and also met with the Seahawks. But he didn’t make that trip and will add to the reigning AFC South champions’ retooled pass-catcher stable. The Jaguars lost Allen Robinson but added Donte Moncrief. He and Seferian-Jenkins now look to serve as complementary targets for Blake Bortles.
This didn’t cost nearly as much as the most recent notable Jaguars free agent tight end signing. Julius Thomas signed a five-year, $46MM deal in 2015, but that didn’t end up working out. ASJ has not produced what Thomas did in Denver but never enjoyed those kind of favorable circumstances, either. And, as was the case when Thomas signed, Marcedes Lewis is still on the team.
Seferian-Jenkins is only 25, however, and if last season was a brief indication could have some upside. Although, the two-year agreement is likely, to some degree, indicative of his checkered past.
