AFC South Teams Add Players Via International Player Pathway Program
This year was the AFC South’s turn to participate in the International Player Pathway program, which allows teams to carry an additional international player on their practice squads. This year’s players include (via the NFL on Twitter):
- Colts: DB Marcel Dabo, Germany
- Texans: DL Adedayo Odeleye, Nigeria/UK
- Titans: TE Thomas Odukoya, Netherlands
- Jaguars: DB Ayo Oyelola, UK
Per the league’s website, the “program aims to provide elite international athletes the opportunity to compete at the NFL level, improve their skills, and ultimately earn a spot on an NFL roster.”
These players will sit on their respective team’s roster until the end of training camp, at which time the teams will be granted “an international player practice squad exemption.” Assuming these players land on the practice squad, they’ll be ineligible to be activated during the 2022 campaign.
Patricipants in last year’s program included tight end Bernhard Seikovits (Cardinals), offensive lineman Alfredo Gutierrez (49ers), offensive lineman Max Pircher (Rams), and linebacker Aaron Donkor (Seahawks).
Jaguars To Re-Sign DL Adam Gotsis
Adam Gotsis will be extending his stay in Duval County. The veteran defensive lineman is re-signing with the Jaguars, per his agent David Canter (Twitter link via Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson). 
The 29-year-old began his career with the Broncos in 2016. While he played a reserve role in his rookie season, he took on a starter’s workload the following year. It was in that 2017 campaign that he set a career high in tackles with 41, adding a pair of sacks and five quarterback hits. A similar performance in 2018 had many expecting a lucrative extension was forthcoming.
However, the former second-rounder ended his final season in Denver by undergoing knee surgery. That concluded an underwhelming year for him, as he struggled in then-head coach Vic Fangio‘s system. It also made the decision easier on the Broncos to let the Georgia Tech alum leave in free agency.
That offseason, Gotsis signed in Jacksonville for the first time. He demonstrated that he had recovered from the injury, playing the full season and making 14 starts. While he was held without a sack, his level of play earned him another deal with the Jaguars last year. The Australian saw a dip in playing time, but still managed to match his career high with three sacks.
In 2022, Gotsis will likely once again see a rotational role. The Jaguars added Folorunso Fatukasi in free agency, and selected Travon Walker with the No. 1 pick in last week’s draft. Still, he will add experienced depth to what figures to be a much improved defensive front.
2023 NFL Fifth-Year Option Results
Monday marked the deadline for NFL clubs to officially pick up their options on 2019 first-rounders. Fifth-year option seasons are no longer just guaranteed for injury — they’re now fully guaranteed, which makes these decisions a little tougher for teams.

EJ Perry Signs With Jaguars; Nixes Eagles Deal
EJ Perry isn’t going to Philly after all. On Tuesday, the former Brown quarterback agreed to sign with the Jaguars after initial reports had him ticketed for the Eagles (Twitter link via Adam Schefter of ESPN.com).

The Eagles were believed to have two notable undrafted free agent quarterbacks in Perry and ex-Nevada signal caller Carson Strong. While Strong received a larger-than-average $320K guarantee for his weekend deal, other teams still had interest in Perry.
Perry — who started out at Boston College — was named the Ivy League Player of the Year in 2021 after throwing for 3,033 yards and 23 touchdowns in just ten games. He also showed dual-threat potential, tacking on 402 rushing yards and seven TDs via the ground.
It’s not clear if Perry has a better path to the 53-man roster in Jacksonville. The Jaguars already have former No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence under center with C.J. Beathard and Jake Luton in reserve.
The Eagles, meanwhile, have some new options to consider beyond starter Jalen Hurts. If GM Howie Roseman elects to trade Gardner Minshew, Strong and Reid Sinnett could vie for the QB2 spot.

Jaguars Sign 15 Undrafted Free Agents
The Jaguars stole some headlines during the draft when they selected Travon Walker with the first-overall pick. Days later, the team is still adding. The Jaguars announced the signing of 15 undrafted free agents:

The most notable name on the list is Kevin Austin. The wideout had a breakout campaign with Notre Dame in 2021, finishing with 48 receptions for 888 yards and seven touchdowns. Standing at 6-2 and 215 pounds, the receiver will compete for a roster spot with fellow UDFA WR Lujuan Winningham, who had 25 touchdowns during his final three seasons at Central Arkansas.
Andrew Mevis went 20-for-23 on field goals last season and made 100 percent of his extra point tries, putting him on the NFL map. He’ll provide some competition in a room that also features Matthew Wright and Ryan Santoso.
Jaguars Sign Ross Matiscik To Extension
The Jaguars have signed long snapper Ross Matiscik to a contract extension, per Josh Alper of PFT. Matiscik ended up getting a five-year extension worth $5.965MM, per ESPN’s Field Yates (on Twitter). The deal includes a $550K signing bonus. The extension will keep the key special teamer in Jacksonville through the 2026 season.
Jacksonville signed Matiscik, now 25, as an undrafted free agent out of Baylor heading into the 2020 season. He has since appeared in 33 straight games as the Jags’ long snapper.
Jaguars Acquire No. 27, Select LB Devin Lloyd
The Jaguars are moving up. Jacksonville has acquired No. 27 from the Buccaneers and will select Utah linebacker Devin Lloyd.

In exchange for No. 27, Tampa Bay acquired picks No. 33, No. 106, and No. 180 from the Jaguars. Tampa Bay will unofficially be on the clock following tonight’s first-round festivities. If this ends up being the final deal of the night, it will make nine total trades.
The six-foot-three, 235-pound Lloyd had a massively productive four-year career in Utah. He saved his best for last, producing 111 tackles, including 22 for a loss, seven sacks and four interceptions in 14 games in 2021. His play earned him Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year honors and was a main reason why the Utes won their conference and made their first ever appearance in the Rose Bowl.
While he is on the leaner side for a middle linebacker (which probably contributed to his late-first draft stock), his length and speed should easily let him translate that production into NFL success.
Jaguars Draft Travon Walker No. 1 Overall
After all the deliberation and lack of consensus, the Jaguars have used the No. 1 overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft to select Georgia edge rusher Travon Walker. 
In three seasons with the Bulldogs, Walker emerged as a versatile piece along the defensive front. His junior campaign saw a jump in production, as he totaled 33 tackles and 6.0 sacks. Those relatively pedestrian numbers contrast with his size (six-foot-five, 275 pounds) and impressive testing figures to give him a higher upside, according to many, than most or all other prospects in this year’s class.
Walker tested well at the Combine, posting a 4.51-second 40-yard dash despite his 272-pound frame. As a result, Walker found himself bouncing up and down the top-1o of mock drafts leading up to the draft.
Walker unfortunately was in a serious car accident earlier today, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, but, luckily, emerged without injuries. Rapoport added that no citations were issued.
Walker should be fine to walk into the building in Jacksonville ready to get to work and bring the “Sacksonville” moniker back to Duval.
Jaguars Pick Up Josh Allen’s Fifth-Year Option
While there is another, more well-known NFL player with the same name, defensive end Josh Allen has established himself as worthy of a raise going into 2023 in Jacksonville’s eyes. The Jaguars announced on Thursday that they have exercised his fifth-year option. 
Allen, 24, went seventh overall to Jacksonville in 2019, making him the third edge rusher off the board. He had an immediate impact as a rookie, posting 44 tackles and 10.5 sacks. That sent him to the Pro Bowl, and earned him consideration for Defensive Rookie of the Year, an honor which ultimately went to second overall pick Nick Bosa.
His 2020 season was hampered by a knee injury, but Allen responded well this past year. In 16 games, he totalled a career-high 71 tackles, along with 7.5 sacks, one forced fumble and an interception. His level of play certainly hasn’t stopped edge rusher from becoming the expected position of tonight’s first overall pick from Jacksonville, but it has provided a foundation for what the team hopes will be a defensive turnaround beginning in 2022.
As a result of today’s news, Allen will earn just over $16MM in 2023. As is the case with most (if not all) players whose options have been picked up in recent days, however, the possibility exists for a long-term extension to be worked out in the not-too-distant future.
