Latest On Dolphins’ Mike Pouncey
Dolphins center Mike Pouncey has been out for the last three weeks and he’s not sure whether he’ll be able to suit up over the next four. When asked whether he’ll be able to play again this season, Pouncey said, “I don’t know. We’ll see how it goes,” (link via Adam H. Beasley of The Miami Herald).
Conflicting reports have emerged lately regarding the severity of Pouncey’s hip condition. Some sources have indicated that Miami is worried about Pouncey’s long-term health status. Meanwhile, other reports have said the hip issue is not a career-threatening injury. Either way, it sounds like this injury could potentially end Pouncey’s season. It’s not clear whether he would be available for the playoffs, either, should the Dolphins qualify.
Pouncey, 27, has made the Pro Bowl as both a guard and center in the past. The sixth-year pro graded as the league’s No. 11 center last year, according to Pro Football Focus’ metrics. This year, he is just the No. 31 ranked center, putting him 18 spots behind his brother, Maurkice Pouncey.
The Dolphins, 7-5 on the year, are now 3-4 without Pouncey. Anthony Steen again started in his place Sunday as Miami lost 38-6.
Adam Gase Garnering Rave Reviews
The 7-4 Dolphins have won six straight and are on pace to make their first playoff trip since 2008, and the team’s players insist that rookie head coach Adam Gase has a lot to do with it. Many members of the team “love” playing for Gase, they told Hal Habib of the Palm Beach Post. “He’s different. He’s … different,” backup quarterback Matt Moore said of Gase, 38, the youngest head coach in the NFL. “I think when he does talk to guys, both offensively and defensively, he’s got something working for him that resonates within guys.” Gase referred to the culture that existed in recent Dolphins regimes as “nonsense,” while longtime Miami defensive end Cameron Wake revealed that observing some past teammates’ commitment issues was “100 percent” difficult to digest. “He gives you the leash, gives you the rope,” stated left tackle Branden Albert. “If you mess it up, then he pulls it, and I think that’s how it should be. For the most part, guys have been good about not messing up.”
Dolphins To Promote WR Rashawn Scott
The Dolphins will promote wide receiver Rashawn Scott from the practice squad, a source tells Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald (Twitter link). Miami already has an open roster spot given that it waived defensive tackle Leon Orr earlier today.

Starting wide receiver DeVante Parker suffered a back injury during the second half of Sunday’s win against the 49ers, and though he’s listed as day-to-day, he didn’t participate in Wednesday’s practice. Parker has struggled with injuries in the past, and Scott’s promotion — coupled with the fact that the Dolphins worked out a quarter of pass-catchers yesterday — could indicate that Parker’s availability for Week 13 is in question. If Parker misses this weekend’s contest the Ravens, Miami will rely on Jarvis Landry, Kenny Stills, Leonte Carroo, and Jakeem Grant.
Scott, 24, was a 2016 undrafted free agent out of the University of Miami. He was waived during the Dolphins’ final cutdowns in September, and has spent the entirety of this year on Miami’s practice squad.
Leon Orr Arrested; Released By Dolphins
Leon Orr is out of a job. After being arrested on charges of misdemeanor marijuana possession and possession of a controlled substance, the Dolphins have released the defensive tackle, coach Adam Gase confirmed to reporters.
Orr was signed to Miami’s practice squad in September and was bumped up to the active roster in October. The promotion was a big opportunity for the 2015 UDFA out of Florida as he had only three NFL games on his resume heading into this season. Now, it might be a while before he gets his next opportunity to play anywhere.
Orr, 24, was pulled over when cops believed his car to have illegally tinted windows. Upon approaching the car, deputies detected a strong odor of marijuana. From there, they found Orr to be carrying marijuana on his person and discovered marijuana wax and THC-laced liquids in the car.
This isn’t Orr’s first red flag. During his senior year at Florida, Orr was moved out of the starting lineup and responded by walking out on the program. When he returned two days later to apologize, he was told by then-coach Will Muschamp that he was not welcome back. If not for that incident, it’s possible that Orr could have been a Day 3 pick.
Dolphins Notes: Cameron, WR Tryouts
- Dolphins tight end Jordan Cameron is uncertain about his football future, as he tells Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post that his status is “up in the air right now.” Cameron, 28, was ruled out for the year after suffering the fourth reported concussion of his career. Those repeated brain injuries could force Cameron to hang up his cleats after a six-year career.
- The Dolphins worked out wide receivers Da’Ron Brown, Marcus Johnson, Jay Lee, and Corey Washington today, according to Howard Balzer of BalzerFootball.com (Twitter link). Miami pass-catcher DeVante Parker is day-to-day with a back injury, so the club is likely just looking for depth.
Dolphins Will Try To Retain Kenny Stills
- The Dolphins will try to retain impending free agent Kenny Stills, according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. Head coach Adam Gase loves Stills, who has become one of the league’s better deep threats, but depending on how aggressive the bidding on Stills becomes, Jackson writes that Miami could let him seek his fortune elsewhere and try to replace him with Leonte Carroo.
Byron Maxwell Doesn't Begrudge Chip Kelly
Byron Maxwell does not hold any ill will toward Chip Kelly despite his shaky 2015 season in Philadelphia. Instead, the Dolphins‘ top cornerback observed a dysfunctional defense, one that ranked 30th last season.
Dion Jordan Unsure If He'll Play This Year
- Dolphins defensive end Dion Jordan practiced Wednesday for the first time in almost two years and “felt good,” but whether he’ll play this season is up in the air. “I don’t know,” Jordan told Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald. “It’s kind of hard to tell. It’s my health, man. It’s my body. If my body tells me I’m not ready to go out there and perform with the best athletes, I’m not going to put myself out there. The way everything’s been going, it’s been going well. I’ve got high hopes for myself to go out and compete before the season ends.” Jordan, whom the Dolphins chose third overall in the 2013 draft, has missed 32 of 58 regular-season games – 22 because of various suspensions – and has been out all of this year after undergoing two knee surgeries in the summer.

Dolphins’ Dion Jordan To Return To Practice
Dion Jordan is slated to practice for the Dolphins for the first time in nearly two years, according to Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald. Jordan has spent the whole season on the NFI list with a knee injury, but he has been cleared to practice.
Jordan, a former No. 3 overall pick in the draft, was conditionally reinstated by the league over the summer after missing all of 2015. What the Dolphins didn’t know is that he underwent surgery while in limbo.
Now, the Dolphins will start evaluating Jordan to figure out if and when he can see live action. Per league rules, Miami has three weeks to decide whether to activate Jordan or to shelve him for the rest of the year. It’s not immediately clear where Jordan is physically, so it’s hard to say when he’ll play in his first game since December 28, 2014.
If Jordan gets the green light, he could help fill the gap while Jason Jones serves a two-game suspension. Jones violated the league’s substance-abuse policy with a DUI and will sit out until Miami’s Dec. 4 game against Baltimore. Jones played in all 10 Dolphins games this season, his first with the team, and started five. He’s registered 2.5 sacks, 23 tackles and recovered a fumble.
