Isaiah Pead

North Notes: Bakhtiari, Browns, Lions

It’s not too early for Ted Thompson and the Packers to start thinking about extending David Bakhtiari‘s contract, according to Ryan Wood of USA Today-Wisconsin. Green Bay’s starting left tackle is entering the final year of his rookie contract, and is interested in remaining with the team beyond 2016, as he tells Wood.

“I think it’s mutual,” Bakhtiari said of his interest in sticking with the Packers. “I like it here, and they like me. I have another year. So I think if they want to do it early, awesome. If not, then we have one more year to work together. So we can talk about it then. I do think it’s too early though.”

The Packers don’t foray into free agency much, but do typically lock up their own players, so it could be a matter of when, not if, the team gets something done with Bakhtiari. We saw Green Bay lock up Mike Daniels months before he was eligible for free agency, but the club sometimes lets talks go down to the wire — Randall Cobb and Bryan Bulaga signed extensions a year ago just before hitting the open market.

As we wait to see if Bakhtiari and the Packers can get anything done this offseason, let’s round up some more items from out of the NFL’s North divisions….

  • Browns executive VP of football operations Sashi Brown would be shocked if the team traded up to No. 1 in the draft, telling Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com that the club is more likely to trade down, if it moves off the No. 2 pick. The Titans have the first overall pick, so if the Browns intend to select a quarterback second overall, the only way they won’t get their man is if another team trades for Tennessee’s pick.
  • New Lions general manager Bob Quinn said today that he hasn’t talked to Calvin Johnson yet about whether or not the wide receiver wants to continue playing, per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. Although Quinn doesn’t want to rush Johnson into a decision, the GM admits he “absolutely” hopes to have resolution on the issue before free agency begins in March.
  • Although there’s no question that Lions players wanted Jim Caldwell back as the team’s head coach, Quinn didn’t consult with any players before making a decision on Caldwell, as Tim Twentyman of DetroitLions.com details.
  • Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle passes (Twitter links) along a couple workout updates, reporting that the Browns recently tried out kicker Kyle Brindza, while the Vikings auditioned running back Isaiah Pead.

White had previously worked out for the Cardinals, while Swaim spent time in Buccaneers training camp.
  • The Seahawks auditioned four players today (via Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle on Twitter): linebackers Curtis Grant and Zach Thompson and offensive linemen Ian Joseph and Julian Vandervelde.
  • The Browns tried out kicker Kyle Brindza, tweets ESPN’s Field Yates. The 23-year-old has spent time with the Buccaneers and Lions.
  • Yates also notes that running back Isaiah Pead visited the Vikings. The former second-round pick has compiled 78 rushing yards on 19 career attempts.

Workout Notes: 12/17/15

Minor NFL Transactions: 11/27/15

Here are Friday’s minor transactions, including signings and cuts, from around the NFL:

  • The Steelers have released veteran running back Isaiah Pead and elevated running back Fitzgerald Toussaint from their practice squad, tweets Missi Matthews of Steelers.com. Pead, who started the season with the Rams, was cut and then signed with Pittsburgh earlier this month when Le’Veon Bell was placed on IR. However, the 25-year-old didn’t see any action for the Steelers.
  • The Patriots opened up a spot on their 53-man roster today by waiving linebacker Eric Martin, says Mike Reiss of ESPN.com (via Twitter). Doug Kyed of NESN.com reports (via Twitter) that the Pats are adding tight end Asante Cleveland to their active roster from the practice squad, though that move might not become official until Saturday.
  • Having officially placed cornerback Chris Culliver to the injured reserve list today due to his torn ACL/MCL, Washington has promoted another cornerback, Dashaun Phillips, to its 53-man roster, the team announced in a press release.
  • Prior to Thursday’s game against the Cowboys, the Panthers signed long snapper Danny Aiken as an insurance policy in case starter J.J. Jansen was unable to go. Jansen played against Dallas, and Carolina cut Aiken today, per Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (Twitter link).

Steelers Place Le’Veon Bell On IR

MONDAY, 1:24pm: The Steelers have officially placed Bell on injured reserve, ending his season, the team announced today. Pittsburgh has signed running back Isaiah Pead to take Bell’s spot on the roster.

SUNDAY, 9:09pm: The Steelers were able to get Ben Roethlisberger back in the lineup in time for today’s game against the Bengals, but star running back Le’Veon Bell was carted off with a knee injury. The team was optimistic that it is only an MCL injury with no damage to the ACL based on the initial exam.

However, the MRI showed that Bell had a significant MCL injury, reports Adam Schefter of ESPN (via Twitter). According to Schefter, the team will continue to evaluate the injury, but he is expected to be placed on season-ending injured reserve.

With Bell out, DeAngelo Williams should take back the starting role that began the season in. He carried the ball 41 times in the first two games with Bell serving a suspension, but had only 13 attempts in the subsequent five games in a backup role, before filling in today after the injury. He had 71 yards on nine carries, including a 55-yard rush for his season long.

Dri Archer and Jordan Todman are the other runners on the active roster. Fitzgerald Toussaint is on the practice squad, but the team will likely bring a number of backs in to work out this week.

Former Rams halfback Isaiah Pead will be the first to work out for the Steelers, visiting the Steelers tomorrow, writes Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (via Twitter). Rapoport believes the team could sign him and get him acclimated to the team quickly.

Earlier today we learned that the Patriots worked out wide receiver Hakeem Nicks. As it turns out, they also auditioned two other players: running back Isaiah Pead and tight end Nick Kasa (via Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle on Twitter).

Pead, 26 in December, was once expected to become a leading rusher for the Rams as the heir apparent to Steven Jackson. Things never worked out that way for the 2012 second-round pick, but he did spent three years and change with the club, playing in 27 games with one start. This year, Pead appeared in just two games and notched two carries for three yards before he was released.

Here’s a rundown of today’s workouts and auditions from around the NFL..

Rams Release RB Isaiah Pead

The Rams have released running back Isaiah Pead, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com (on Twitter). That move will help clear the way for cornerback Brandon McGee, who has been promoted to the active roster.

Pead, 26 in December, was once expected to become a leading rusher for the Rams as theheir apparent to Steven Jackson. Things never worked out that way for the 2012 second-round pick, but he did spent three years and change with the club, playing in 27 games with one start. This year, Pead appeared in just two games and notched two carries for three yards.

Pead suffered a torn ACL in the summer of 2014 which ended that season before it even began. This offseason, he agreed to a restructured deal which reduced his base salary from $940,650 to $585,000 for 2015.
