Chiefs Activate QB Chad Henne
Chad Henne is back on an active roster. The Chiefs announced that have activated the veteran quarterback from the injured reserve. The team also promoted defensive tackle Joey Ivie from the practice squad, placed offensive tackle Greg Senat on injured reserve, and waived quarterback Kyle Shurmur.
Henne suffered a broken ankle during the preseason, forcing him out of action. Patrick Mahomes is listed as questionable for tomorrow’s game against the Vikings, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Henne will force his way into the lineup. Rather, Matt Moore will likely get the start should Mahomes sit out. Moore got the start last weekend, throwing for 267 yards and two scores.
Henne signed a two-year deal with the Chiefs back in 2018. He got into a single game last year, completing two of his three pass attempts. His last extended stint as a starter came in 2013 when he started 13 games for the Jaguars. The 34-year-old will hit free agency this offseason.
Ivie, a 2017 seventh-rounder out of Florida, spent all of the 2018 campaign on Kansas City’s practice squad. He made the Chiefs opening-day roster, but he was waived and added to the practice squad in mid-September.
Senat, a former sixth-round pick, was claimed off waivers from the Ravens back in September. Shurmur, a former Vanderbilt standout, was promoted from the Chiefs’ practice squad following the injury to Mahomes.
Patrick Mahomes Ruled Out Vs. Packers
Patrick Mahomes will not suit up on Sunday night against the Packers. Coach Andy Reid confirmed that Matt Moore will get the start in place of Mahomes.
There remains no timetable for the MVP to return to the field. While there were fears that he may miss the season, it appears that Mahomes will return to the lineup at some point over the next few weeks.
Moore completed 10-of-19 passes in relief of Mahomes last week for the Chiefs. He accumulated 117 passing yards. Kyle Shurmur is the back-up to Moore.
Chiefs Release De’Anthony Thomas
The Chiefs released wide receiver De’Anthony Thomas, according to a team announcement. In a related move, quarterback Kyle Shurmur was promoted to the 53-man roster.
Thomas spent the last five years with the Chiefs, but his 2018 season was brought to a screeching halt after he broke his leg. Then, in January, an arrest for marijuana possession hurt his free agency stock. Before all of that, Thomas saw time both as a returner and receiver for KC. After some time away, he circled back to the club in August, but only managed 4.2 yards per punt return, well below his career average of 8.8 yards per attempt.
Shurmur, the son of Giants head coach Pat Shurmur, surpassed Jay Cutler as Vanderbilt’s all-time leader in passing yards and completions before leaving school. He’ll help backstop the Chiefs as they await the return of Patrick Mahomes. In the interim, KC will use Matt Moore as their starter.
Sunday NFL Transactions: AFC West

Additionally, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads today. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.
