Jaguars Cut QB Landry Jones

Landry Jones‘ short time in Jacksonville has come to an end. On Monday, the Jaguars released the quarterback, according to a team announcement.

The Jaguars signed Jones on Halloween for insurance after Blake Bortles suffered a left shoulder injury. Now that Bortles is in the clear, the Jaguars felt comfortable enough to release Jones, leaving Cody Kessler as the team’s only backup QB.

Up until the Jags deal, Jones spent his entire NFL career with the Steelers. In a limited sample of playing time, Jones completed 64% of his throws with eight touchdowns against seven interceptions. Among the quarterbacks who have thrown at least 160 passes since 2013, Jones ranks 35th in passer rating and 26th in adjusted net yards per attempt, but it’s difficult to assign much relevance to those numbers given his lack of reps.

To fill Jones’ place on the roster, the Jags signed offensive lineman Corey Robinson. The fourth-year pro has 24 career games to his credit, including eight starts.

Jaguars Sign QB Landry Jones

The Jaguars have agreed to sign quarterback Landry Jones, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.com (on Twitter). Jones previously served as a backup to Ben Roethlisberger before he was released by the Steelers on Sept. 1.

Jones, 29, backed up Roethlisberger for the past three seasons, playing in Pittsburgh for five total, but couldn’t beat out Joshua Dobbs for the veteran-reserve spot in Pittsburgh alongside Mason Rudolph. Roethlisberger’s issues with short-term injuries and the Steelers’ preference to rest him the past two Week 17s forced Jones to make five starts in Pittsburgh. Completing 63 percent of his passes, Jones went 3-2 and has thrown for 1,310 yards, eight touchdown passes, and seven interceptions.

Among the quarterbacks who have thrown at least 160 passes since 2013, Jones ranks 35th in passer rating and 26th in adjusted net yards per attempt, but it’s difficult to assign much relevance to those numbers given his small sample size. With that 160-pass cutoff in place, Jones ranks second-to-last in attempts since his rookie campaign, just ahead of Bills QB Derek Anderson.

The Jaguars have concerns about the health of Blake Bortles, so Jones will provide the team with extra insurance. After their bye, the Jags face the Colts on Nov. 11, followed by Jones’ old team on Nov. 18.

Landry Jones Expected To Sign Soon

Free agent quarterback Landry Jones has generated recent interest and is likely to land a job soon, tweets Adam Schefter of ESPN.com.

Jones was reportedly the target of trade interest earlier this year, but those reports may have been the result of the Steelers attempting to deal Jones before releasing him, something they ultimately did just before the regular season got underway. Since then, Jones has worked out for numerous teams, including the Cowboys, Jaguars, 49ers, Patriots, and — according to Schefter — the Lions and Bills. Buffalo, notably, is set to sign fellow signal-caller Derek Anderson, so Jones may no longer be a consideration for the Bills.

Jones, 29, hasn’t played much during his six-year NFL career, as he’s attempted just 169 passes in relief of Ben Roethlisberger. In that span, Jones has been a middling option, completing 63.9% of his passes for 1,310 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

Among the quarterbacks who have thrown at least 160 passes since 2013, Jones ranks 35th in passer rating and 26th in adjusted net yards per attempt, but it’s difficult to assign much relevance to those numbers given his small sample size. With that 160-pass cutoff in place, Jones ranks second-to-last in attempts since his rookie campaign, just ahead of Anderson.

49ers To Work Out QB Landry Jones

The 49ers’ list of prospective quarterbacks continues to grow. On Tuesday, Landry Jones will join the group of roster hopefuls looking to join San Francisco, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic (on Twitter).

Jones, a fourth-round pick of the Steelers in 2013, has already spent time on the workout circuit this season. He’s auditioned for the Patriots, Jaguars and Cowboys over the past eight days.

The longtime Steelers backup will join Tom Savage, Kellen Clemens, Matt Simms and T.J. Yates among those vying to presumably serve as the No. 2 man behind new starter C.J. Beathard. Jones doesn’t have as much service-time experience as Clemens or Yates, nor has he opened a season as a starter like Savage has, but he did spend five seasons in Pittsburgh and started five games from 2015-17.

A prolific college quarterback while at Oklahoma, Jones has a career 63.9 completion percentage (7.8 yards per attempt) and has thrown eight touchdown passes compared to seven interceptions. He played in three games for an injured Ben Roethlisberger and started the Steelers’ past two Week 17 games — both against the Browns — while the Steelers rested Big Ben. Joshua Dobbs, however, beat out Jones for Pittsburgh’s backup job this offseason.

NFL Workout Updates: 9/24/18

Today’s workout updates are below. There were some notable names, including veteran quarterback Landry Jones, who was released by the Steelers at final cuts.

Cleveland Browns

Indianapolis Colts

New England Patriots

New York Jets

Looks like the Browns are searching for defensive help, working out a slew of players on that side of the ball. Jones working out for the Patriots is interesting, as he isn’t really young enough to be seen as a developmental project, and Brian Hoyer is entrenched as Tom Brady‘s backup.

Jaguars Work Out Wright, Jones, Sims

While the Redskins saw enough from Breshad Perriman and Michael Floyd‘s workouts Monday to sign them, Kendall Wright‘s Washington audition did not produce an offer. He has another opportunity a day later.

The Jaguars worked out the veteran slot receiver on Tuesday, Adam Caplan of Sirius XM radio tweets. Wright, Landry Jones and Charles Sims were in Jacksonville today auditioning, per Caplan.

Wright could not make the Vikings’ 53-man roster but is coming off a 614-yard season — his most in a single campaign since the 2014 slate — with the Bears last year. The Jags are still sorting out their receiver hierarchy post-Marqise Lee, but the group produced in a Week 2 win over the Patriots.

Jones also had a Monday workout, with the Cowboys, but he remains a free agent. The Steelers severed ties with their longtime backup quarterback just prior to the regular season. Jones spent five years in Pittsburgh. The Jaguars traded for Cody Kessler this offseason; he and Blake Bortles are the only two passers on Jacksonville’s roster.

A former Buccaneers passing-down back, Sims got an earlier start on the 2018 workout circuit than Wright or Jones, already auditioning for the Texans and Patriots. The Jags have four running backs on their active roster, having added Brandon Wilds late last week because of Leonard Fournette‘s hamstring trouble.

Cowboys Working Out QB Landry Jones

The Cowboys could be looking for an upgrade behind Dak Prescott. Former Steelers backup Landry Jones is working out in Dallas on Monday, Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram tweets.

Jones, 29, has not participated in a known workout since being cut by the Steelers after the preseason. He backed up Ben Roethlisberger for the past three seasons, playing in Pittsburgh for five total, but couldn’t beat out Joshua Dobbs for the veteran-reserve spot in Pittsburgh alongside Mason Rudolph.

A 2017 UDFA success story, Cooper Rush is in his second season backing up Prescott. The Cowboys also have rookie fifth-rounder Mike White on their roster. Rush has thrown three NFL passes, White zero, illustrating how thin Dallas is at this spot.

Roethlisberger’s issues with short-term injuries, and the Steelers’ preference to rest him the past two Week 17s, forced Jones to make five starts. Completing 63 percent of his passes, Jones went 3-2 and has thrown for 1,310 yards, eight touchdown passes and seven interceptions.

Steelers Cut QB Landry Jones, Others

The Steelers have reached the 53-man roster limit by cutting a number of players, including quarterback Landry Jones.

Jones, 29, hasn’t played much during his six-year NFL career, as he’s attempted just 169 passes in relief of Roethlisberger. In that span, Jones has been a middling option, completing 63.9% of his passes for 1,310 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

The Steelers also placed wide receiver Eli Rogers on the Reserve/PUP List, which will keep him off of the field for at least the first six weeks of the season.

Steelers QB Landry Jones Generating Trade Interest

Steelers backup quarterback Landry Jones has generated trade interest from other NFL clubs, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com (Twitter link). However, it may be difficult for Pittsburgh to deal Jones given that he’s the most experienced reserve signal-caller on its roster, per Fowler.

Jones isn’t the only Steelers quarterback being discussed by rival teams, as second-year pro Joshua Dobbs is reportedly also garnering interest. Clearly, Pittsburgh will keep third-round rookie Mason Rudolph behind starter Ben Roethlisberger, and is attempting to choose between Jones and Dobbs for its other quarterback roster slot.
