Buccaneers Sign Dan Feeney, Add Sua Opeta To Practice Squad
In the wake of major injury news on both sides of the line of scrimmage, the Buccaneers have made a number of moves. Defensive lineman Calijah Kancey is dealing with a torn pectoral muscle, while right guard Cody Mauch is also out for the year with a knee injury.
The loss of Kancey prompted Tampa Bay to add defensive lineman Elijah Simmons off the Cardinals’ practice squad yesterday. Similarly, it was reported on Wednesday that the Mauch injury was expected to result in Dan Feeney being added from the Bills’ taxi squad as offensive line depth. Per Fox Sports’ Greg Auman, the Feeney addition has now indeed taken place.
The Bucs are already without left tackle Tristan Wirfs, although he is back at practice and eligible to play at any time. Right tackle Luke Goedeke is set to miss time, albeit without a firm timeline regarding how long he will be unavailable. The interior of Tampa Bay’s O-line will receive a boost once Wirfs returns, since that will allow for Graham Barton to shift back to center.
Especially until that takes place, Feeney will be a welcomed addition given his experience. The ninth-year veteran has made 120 appearances and 65 starts in his career. Feeney has yet to play this season, but he has experience at center (primarily from the 2020 season) as well as guard. Michael Jordan is in line to serve as a starter once again in Week 3, provided he is designated a gameday elevation on Saturday. Feeney will likely provide veteran depth behind him.
The same is also true of Sua Opeta. The 29-year-old was known to be taking part in a workout as potential fill-in options for the Bucs, and Auman notes a practice quad deal has been finalized. Opeta was sidelined for all of 2024 with an ACL tear, but after returning to full health he spent this past offseason with the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay moved on during roster cuts, but Opeta (who made 10 starts across four Eagles campaigns) is now back in the fold as an option to be added to the active roster if needed.
Auman adds Tampa Bay is also auditioning Royce Newman today. A former fourth-rounder, Newman spent his first three years with the Packers before spending the 2024 campaign in Tampa Bay. He too would be a familiar face, but with Feeney on the active roster and Opeta on the practice squad, Newman may not land a deal in the near future.
Cardinals Trim Roster To 53
The Cardinals announced the following roster moves to get down to their initial 53-man roster:
Released:
- LS Aaron Brewer
- RB Michael Carter
- T Jake Curhan
- RB DeeJay Dallas
- TE Josiah Deguara
- WR Simi Fehoko
- CB Darren Hall
- G Nick Leverett
- G Royce Newman
- LB Mykal Walker
Waived:
- DT Kyon Barrs
- LB Elliott Brown
- T Jeremiah Byers
- DE Anthony Goodlow
- WR Bryson Green
- C Sincere Haynesworth
- CB Jaylon Jones
- WR Tejhaun Palmer
- S Jammie Robinson
- DT Elijah Simmons
Placed on IR (designated to return):
- DT Walter Nolen (story)
- LB BJ Ojulari
- DT Bilal Nichols
First-round defensive tackle Nolen will miss at least the first four weeks of his rookie year. The Ole Miss product is dealing with a calf injury that forced him to miss most of training camp. Another d-lineman, Barrs will hit waivers but stands a good chance at landing on the practice squad if he clears.
The Cards made some surprise decisions in the running backs rooms, disposing of veterans like Carter and Dallas in favor of Zonovan Knight, who hasn’t appeared in a game since 2023. One of the veterans could end up back on the practice squad, as could wide receiver/special teamer Fehoko.
Russell suffered a concussion in training and will now miss the entire 2025 season on injured reserve. Jones and Conner, though, will be eligible to return after, at least, a four-week absence. The two linemen are dealing with knee injuries but may be able to bolster the line later in the year.

Packers Announce 53-Man Roster
The Packers featured the youngest roster in the NFL last season, and they’re set to return most of that young core in 2024. Linebacker Kristian Welch brings the most experience of the bunch, with the former UDFA appearing in 57 career games in time with the Ravens and Packers. He spent the 2023 campaign in Green Bay, where he played all 210 of his snaps on special teams. Considering his limited experience on defense, there’s a chance the Packers are tinkering with their roster and intend to bring the veteran back via the practice squad.
Packers To Waive OL Royce Newman
Three full-season Packers offensive line starters have now been moved off the roster this offseason. Following the David Bakhtiari release and Jon Runyan Jr.‘s Giants defection, the team is cutting Royce Newman, per the Green Bay Press-Gazette’s Ryan Wood.
Newman had moved into a Packers starting role as a rookie, coming out of Round 4 in 2021, but had settled in as a backup in recent years. Newman still started eight games from 2022-23, but the Packers made a big addition at guard this offseason. Green Bay is planning to kick first-round tackle Jordan Morgan inside to begin his career.
This move does come after the Packers gave Newman a pay cut. The team reduced Newman’s contract-year salary from $3.12MM to $1.25MM; no dead money will come from this cut. The Packers had reduced the former fourth-round pick’s role since he started for most of Aaron Rodgers‘ fourth MVP season.
The Packers also saw their O-line battered by injuries in 2021, with Bakhtiari and Elgton Jenkins spending much of the season on IR. Pro Football Focus never rated Newman higher than 50th among guards. He spent almost that entire season at right guard, before being demoted following six 2022 starts. The Packers now have Jenkins entrenched at left guard and Morgan set to play on the right side.
Although the Packers moved on from Yosh Nijman this offseason, they added Andre Dillard and are keeping fellow swing option Kadeem Telfort on their 53-man roster. Former third-round pick Sean Rhyan also remains on Green Bay’s roster as a top reserve.
