Packers Re-Sign TE John FitzPatrick
The Packers are bringing back John FitzPatrick after all. The team announced tonight that they’ve re-signed the free agent tight end. Veteran reporter Howard Balzer was first with the news.
There was some uncertainty surrounding FitzPatrick’s future in Green Bay. The midseason acquisition was initially positioned to hit restricted free agency. However, the Packers never tendered him a contract, making the tight end an unrestricted free agent. Ultimately, the two sides will be looking to extend their partnership for at least another season.
A former sixth-round pick by the Falcons, FitzPatrick started last season on Atlanta’s practice squad. He was snagged by Green Bay in October as the Packers navigated Luke Musgrave‘s absence, and FitzPatrick proceeded to get into nine games (plus another playoff contest) for his new squad.
He finished his season with a single catch, with 53 of his 73 offensive snaps coming as a run blocker. The 25-year-old also got some looks on special teams. In total, FitzPatrick has appeared in 91 career offensive snaps and 133 ST snaps.
The Packers positional depth chart should look very similar next year. Tucker Kraft returns as the starting tight end following a breakout campaign, and Musgrave should also be fully healthy after returning late in the 2024 season. FitzPatrick could ultimately be competing for a roster spot with Ben Sims, who finished second at the position in 2024 with 224 snaps.
RFA/ERFA Tender Decisions: 3/12/25
As the 2025 league year begins, here are the Wednesday tender decisions involving restricted and exclusive rights free agents:
RFAs
Tendered:
- Cardinals: WR Greg Dortch
- Chiefs: LB Jack Cochrane, DB Nazeeh Johnson
- Falcons: OL Ryan Neuzil
- Ravens: S Ar’Darius Washington
Nontendered:
- Cardinals: S Andre Chachere, LB Jesse Luketa, T Carter O’Donnell
- Eagles: WR Britain Covey
- Packers: TE John FitzPatrick
- Seahawks: WR Jaelon Darden
ERFAs
Tendered:
- Buccaneers: DL C.J. Brewer
- Cardinals: TE Travis Vokolek
- Giants: LB Dyontae Johnson
Nontendered:
- Seahawks: LB Josh Onujiogu, LB Josh Ross, WR Cody White
The Ravens have discussed an extension with Washington, according to The Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec. For now, the safety is on Baltimore’s cap sheet at $3.26MM. A second-round tender would have cost the Ravens $5.35MM and brought back a second-round pick if the team did not match an offer sheet elsewhere. An unmatched Washington offer sheet now would not bring the Ravens any compensation. Washington started 10 games for the Ravens last season.

Placed on IR (designated for return):
Taylor Heinicke was widely believed to be on the trade block, and it would have come as little surprise if the veteran passer had been released. Atlanta signed Kirk Cousins in free agency and drafted Michael Penix Jr. eighth overall in April. Those two are set to handle starting and backup duties in 2024 (and beyond, if things go according to plan), which suggested Heinicke was expendable. Instead, he will prepare for a second season with the Falcons.
King’s efforts to return to regular NFL action included a contract with the Falcons in March. The former Packers corner sat out the 2022 season while rehabbing multiple injuries. Last year, an Achilles tear forced him to miss another campaign. He was unable to carve out a roster spot in Atlanta, but as a vested veteran he will immediately hit free agency without needing to pass through waivers.
A number of recent draftees are included in the list of players being waived. As a former UDFA, Blair does not meet that criteria but his inclusion is a surprise. The 26-year-old was a standout in the preseason, and ESPN’s Marc Raimondi notes Atlanta is interested is retaining him via the practice squad. The same will no doubt be true of Logue, a sixth-round pick in this year’s draft.
Teams are allowed to designate two players to return from IR without naming them to the 53-man roster. A number of teams have taken advantage of that new rule today, and in Atlanta’s case it means Hellams will not occupy a spot for the time being. The earliest he can be activated is Week 5.

Caleb Huntley suffered a season-ending Achilles injury this past weekend, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter (via Twitter). The injury is expected to require surgery. The Falcons RB made his NFL this season and has collected 369 yards from scrimmage.
While Russell Wilson is expected to start for the Broncos on Christmas, the Broncos still decided to promote a third QB to the roster in Jarrett Guarantano. According to Troy Renck of Denver7 (on Twitter), there was enough interest from other teams (including the Cardinals) for the Broncos to decide to promote the rookie. The UDFA out of Washington State had his first professional gig with the Cardinals before catching on with the Broncos.

Falcons Place LB Deion Jones, CB Isaiah Oliver On IR
The Falcons removed Deion Jones from their active/PUP list last week, but the veteran linebacker will still miss the season’s first four games. Atlanta placed Jones on IR Thursday.
This turned out to be part of a bigger Atlanta IR shift. In addition to the Jones placement, the Falcons moved cornerback Isaiah Oliver, defensive lineman Marlon Davidson, offensive lineman Jalen Mayfield and tight end John FitzPatrick to IR. All are now ineligible through Week 4.

With one of the free roster spots, the Falcons brought back linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski. The team had included the former Bears and Raiders defender among its Tuesday cuts. Atlanta also re-signed defensive lineman Abdullah Anderson and offensive lineman Colby Gossett.
Linked in trade rumors for months, Jones underwent shoulder surgery in May to quiet those. He did not return to practice until late August. The seventh-year defender is set to count for a Falcons-most $20MM against the 2022 cap. The team added Kwiatkoski, former Dean Pees Titans charge Rashaan Evans and second-rounder Troy Andersen at the position — one also housing third-year cog Mykal Walker — this offseason. That and the Falcons having moved on from most of their Super Bowl LI nucleus, as they attempt to rebuild, has naturally inserted Jones’ name into departure rumors.
It should not be completely ruled out Jones could be dealt by the Nov. 1 deadline, but Thursday’s transaction — continuing an injury hiatus into the season — further complicates that status.
Oliver went down with a season-ending knee injury in October of last year. Despite that, the former second-round pick re-signed with the Falcons on a one-year, $2.39MM deal. A 33-game Falcons starter, Oliver will have missed at least a year of football by the time he is able to return. Davidson underwent arthroscopic knee surgery last month. Mayfield lost his right guard job to journeyman Elijah Wilkinson during camp.
