NFL Practice Squad Updates: 9/21/19

We’ve got a couple of practice squad updates for you on a slow Saturday night.

New England Patriots

New Orleans Saints

Stallworth made the Saints’ initial 53-man roster as they were missing defensive tackles Sheldon Rankins and David Onyemata, but got the axe earlier this week. Wright, the former Pac 12 Defensive Player of the Year with Arizona, was a seventh-round pick of Arizona’s back in 2016. After a stint in the AAF, he spent training camp with New England.

Patriots Add RB Robert Martin, Make Other Minor Moves

The Patriots have signed RB Robert Martin and LB Scooby Wright, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss (Twitter links). Both players practiced with the team today.

Martin, who spent 2014-17 at Rutgers, will add depth for New England, as Damien Harris is dealing with minor injuries and the team isn’t likely to play any of its top running backs in its fourth preseason contest. The franchise worked out former Washington State running back James Williams before signing Martin, as Doug Kyed of NESN relays.

Wright was a seventh-round pick in the 2016 draft. He’s played for the Browns and Cardinals in addition to briefly playing in the failed AAF league.

New England waived DE/OLB Keionta Davis and placed special teamer Brandon King on injured reserve to accommodate the signings.

Saints Work Out Two Linebackers

The Saints are hunting for some linebacker depth. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reports (via Twitter) that free agent Scooby Wright worked out for the team yesterday. Meanwhile, Herbie Teope of NFL.com tweets that the Saints also auditioned linebacker Zaire Anderson.

The Saints could definitely use some reinforcement at the position, as they’re currently rostering five linebackers. The grouping includes A.J. KleinManti Te’oDemario Davis, Alex Anzalone, and Craig Robertson, so the could surely benefit from some additional depth.

Wright, 24, has seen the field for 13 regular season games throughout his career. The 2016 seventh-round pick has seven career tackles, and he’s had stints with the Cardinals and Browns. He was cut by Arizona in late August.

Anderson, a 2015 undrafted free agent out of Nebraska, had spent his entire career with the Broncos. The 26-year-old appeared in every regular season game over the past two years, including a 2017 campaign where he compiled 23 tackles.

Cardinals Cut Brice Butler, Others

The Cardinals have moved their roster to 53 players by making the following transactions:

Cut:

Placed on injured reserve:

Waived from injured reserve:

Additionally, the Cardinals activated both tight end Jermaine Gresham and linebacker Marcus Golden off the physically unable to perform list.

Cardinals Release LB Scooby Wright

The Cardinals have released linebacker Scooby Wright, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets. Wright will be subject to waivers since he has less than four years of NFL experience and it’s possible that another club will pick him up before he hits the open market.

Wright, 23, missed the Cardinals’ final cut in September of last year but signed on with the practice squad the following day. In October, he earned a promotion to the 53-man roster. Wright was on the roster for ten games, but he logged just one tackle.

Wright has yet to make a major impact at the NFL level, but he is well known in the area for his work at the University of Arizona. In 2014, Wright tallied an eye-popping 163 tackles, 29 tackles for loss, 14 sacks, and six forced fumbles. Unfortunately, he was slowed by injuries in 2015 and his draft stock suffered as a result. The Browns took him with one of the final picks in the draft and he later found his way to the Cardinals in 2016.

Cardinals To Promote LB Scooby Wright

In the wake of Markus Golden‘s ACL tear, the Cardinals are calling up fellow edge rusher Scooby Wright from the practice squad, a source tells Ian Rapoport of NFL.com (on Twitter). In related moves, the Cardinals have signed guard/tackle Earl Watford, released guard/tackle Vinston Painter, and released wide receiver Aaron Dobson, linebacker Alani Fua, and defensive end Ed Stinson from IR. Scooby Wright (vertical)

Wright, 23, missed the Cardinals’ final cut in September but signed on with the practice squad the following day. Since then, he has been cycled through the NFL’s usual process for fringe players (promoted, cut, re-signed to practice squad, repeat). Through four weeks, he has dressed for three games.
