Minor NFL Transactions: 9/16/17

Here are today’s minor moves.

  • Jason Verrett‘s impending injury absence will cause the Chargers to add cornerback depth. The Bolts signed cornerback Michael Davis from their practice squad and cut wideout Geremy Davis, Eric Williams of ESPN.com reports. The Chargers signed Geremy Davis on Monday as Dontrelle Inman insurance, but he didn’t play in Los Angeles’ Week 1 game. Michael Davis is a rookie UDFA out of BYU.
  • The 49ers promoted cornerback Asa Jackson from their practice squad and waived fellow corner Keith Reaser to clear a roster spot, Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com tweets. A fifth-round 49ers pick in 2014, Reaser played in 29 games for the team — including last week’s loss to the Panthers — but didn’t start any. San Francisco signed Jackson, an ex-Ravens starter, in August and stashed him on the practice squad after the preseason.
  • Nose tackles Kyle Peko and Tyrique Jarrett will once again trade places with the Broncos. Denver will promote Peko from its practice squad and waive Jarrett, Nicki Jhabvala of the Denver Post tweets. A rookie UDFA out of Pittsburgh, Jarrett saw Week 1 work on a depleted Broncos line. Peko, a cousin of Broncos starting nose Domata Peko, was waived last weekend.
  • The Colts promoted linebacker Darnell Sankey from their practice squad, cutting wide receiver Matt Hazel to make room, Mike Chappell of IndySportsCentral.com reports (via Twitter). Both Antonio Morrison and Anthony Walker are dealing with injuries, making this an insurance addition.
  • The Jets signed outside linebacker Freddie Bishop and defensive lineman Lawrence Thomas from their practice squad, Brian Costello of the New York Post tweets. The team also waived linebacker Edmond Robinson with an injury settlement.

Sunday NFL Transactions: NFC West

Listed below are the Sunday roster moves for the four NFC West teams. Following the 53-man roster cutdown deadline yesterday, many teams will make slight tweaks to their rosters, claiming players off waivers or signing guys who clear waivers. Those transactions for the Cardinals, Rams, 49ers, and Seahawks are noted below.

Additionally, as of 12:00pm CT today, teams can begin constructing their 10-man practice squads. You can check out our glossary entry on practice squads to brush up on those changes, as well as all the other guidelines that govern the 10-man units, whose players practice with the team but aren’t eligible to suit up on Sundays.

49ers Sign CB Asa Jackson

The 49ers have signed cornerback Asa Jackson, according to a team announcement. To make room, the team waived/injured fellow corner Zach Franklin.

Jackson, 27, is best known for his four seasons spent with the Ravens. The former fifth round pick was cycled through Baltimore’s roster last year before being plucked from the practice squad by the Lions. Upon being reunited with Teryl Austin, Jackson appeared in four games with two starts.

Franklin joined San Francisco as an undrafted rookie free agent in May out of Washburn University. In his college career, he appeared in 45 games (34 starts) and recorded 109 tackles, 32 passes defensed, six tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble.

Fun fact: Jackson is the fifth Sacramento native on the Niners’ roster, according to Matt Barrows of The Sacramento Bee (on Twitter). If you include DeAndre Carter’s college days at Sacramento State, the count is actually up to six.

Minor NFL Transactions: 1/3/17

Tuesday’s minor moves:

  • The Lions have signed offensive lineman Garrett Reynolds and promoted cornerback Adairius Barnes from the practice squad, as Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com tweets. They’ll replace offensive tackle Corey Robinson (foot) and cornerback Asa Jackson (ankle), who were put on IR. To fill Barnes’ vacated spot on the practice squad, the team signed O-lineman Jason Weaver, a source told Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle (on Twitter).
  • The Chiefs have signed outside linebacker Victor Ochi off the Jets’ practice squad and placed linebacker Dadi Nicolas on IR, tweets Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star. Ochi will now go from a team whose season is over to one with a first-round playoff bye.
  • The Seahawks have signed long snapper Tyler Ott, according to Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times (Twitter link). Ott will take over for Nolan Frese, who’s done for the season because of an ankle injury. Elsewhere on the roster, Seattle will waive safety Tyvis Powell to make room for new addition Devin Hester, per ESPN’s Adam Caplan (Twitter link).

Lions Sign Asa Jackson From Ravens’ P-Squad

The Lions are signing cornerback Asa Jackson off the Ravens’ practice squad, a source tells Mike Garafolo of NFL.com (on Twitter). Jackson will take the place of nickel corner Quandre Diggs who was lost for the season this weekAsa Jackson (vertical)

Jackson played under Teryl Austin in Baltimore when Austin served as the Ravens’ defensive backs coach. Now the defensive coordinator for the Lions, Austin put in a good word for Jackson. The Ravens waived Jackson ten days ago to make room for tight end Nick Boyle and re-signed him to taxi squad. That move allowed the Ravens to keep Jackson in the fold, but it also allowed him to get scooped up by rival teams.

Jackson, 26, has had multiple stints the Ravens. The former fifth-rounder has 18 career games on his resume and he’s totaled 30 tackles and three passes defended in that time.

Detroit’s pass defense has been among the worst in the NFL this year, and in fact ranks dead last in passing DVOA, according to Football Outsiders.

Ravens Activate Nick Boyle

The Ravens offensive line will be getting some reinforcement. Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun reports (via Twitter) that the team has activated tight end Nick Boyle. The 23-year-old had been suspended for 10 games after violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs. To make room on the roster, the team has waived cornerback Asa Jackson.

Nick BoyleBoyle, a 2015 fifth-round pick, didn’t do much during his rookie campaign. The Delaware product ultimately played in 11 games (two starts), hauling in 18 catches for 153 yards. The tight end ended up missing the final month of his rookie season due to a four-game suspension.

The 6-foot-4, 260-pound tight end is better known for his blocking, and Zrebiec notes that Boyle will likely slide into the “blocking, No. 3 tight end role” while Crockett Gillmore recovers from his thigh injury. The Ravens also have tight ends Dennis Pitta and Darren Waller on the active roster.

Jackson, 26, was on his third stint with the Ravens. The former fifth-rounder has 18 career games under his belt, and he’s compiled 30 tackles and three passes defended. Jackson was promoted to the active roster in mid-November.

Ravens Promote CB Asa Jackson

The Ravens announced that they have promoted cornerback Asa Jackson to the 53-man roster. His spot was cleared when Baltimore placed rookie defensive tackle Willie Henry on injured reserve. The Ravens also signed guard Jarrod Pughsley and tight end Austin Traylor to the practice squad while releasing quarterback David Fales. Asa Jackson (vertical)

Jackson will help provide depth which Shareece Wright deals with a thigh injury. He may also be utilized on special teams where Devin Hester has coughed up the ball multiple times this year as a return. Jackson missed the 75-man cut in Arizona this summer, but he hopes to stick on the Ravens’ 53-man roster after being jostled around this year.

Henry, a fourth-round pick, is the third Ravens draft pick to be placed on IR this year. He was active for only one game this year.

The good news is that for all the injuries in Baltimore, the team did not announce that tackle Alex Lewis or guard Marshal Yanda are going to IR. Lewis suffered a high ankle sprain recently and was given a six week prognosis. Yanda, meanwhile, is dealing with a shoulder injury and an uncertain timetable for return.
