Giants’ Cody Latimer Designated For Return
Giants wide receiver Cody Latimer has been designated for return, coach Pat Shurmur announced. Latimer will take the practice field on Wednesday, kick starting a three-week window for activation.
Latimer, 26, was enjoying an expanded role in the Giants’ offense against the Eagles on Oct. 11 before he went down with a hamstring injury. The wide receiver had six catches for 108 yards across four games before being sidelined.
The Giants aren’t playing for much at this point of the season, but Latimer will have a chance to showcase himself before reaching unrestricted free agency in March. The Giants are also keenly interested to see whether he can be a fit for the 2019 roster after signing him to a one-year, $2.5MM contract in the offseason.
The Giants close out their season with games against the Bears, Redskins, Titans, Colts, and Cowboys.

Giants Sign K Marshall Koehn To P-Squad
The Giants signed kicker Marshall Koehn to the practice squad, per a team announcement. To make room, the club cut tight end Garrett Dickerson from the 10-man unit.
It’s possible that Aldrick Rosas is banged up, but he has not been listed on the injury report in advance of Sunday’s game against the Eagles. The Giants aren’t looking to dump Rosas, who turns 24 next month. Rosas has connected on 95% of his field goal tries this season, which puts him fourth among all qualifying kickers in the NFL, and he has nailed all of his extra point attempts in 2018.
Assuming Rosas is healthy, it’s possible that the Giants are getting an advanced look at Koehn for the offseason. Then again, the Giants can keep Rosas on the cheap in 2019 thanks to his status as an exclusive rights free agent (ERFA), so there’s little need for a Plan B.
Koehn, 26, appeared in his one and only NFL game last year as a member of the Bengals. He spent this past offseason with the Giants and had a three-day stint on their practice squad in October.
Giants Eyeing Kyle Lauletta Game Work
Last season became somewhat of a missed opportunity for the Giants. Davis Webb did not see any action, and the team moved no closer to a post-Eli Manning future. With Webb now off the team, and the Giants bypassing the 2018 first-round quarterback contingent, the focus may be shifting to the next mid-round backup.
The Giants are planning to give Kyle Lauletta game work at points down the stretch, Ralph Vacchiano of SNY.tv reports. They don’t want to make a similar mistake like they did in 2017, especially with Manning possibly in his final games as a Giant.
This plan, however, will be contingent on the Giants’ standing in an increasingly muddied NFC East. After two straight wins, the Giants are 3-7 and three games behind the now-Colt McCoy-led Redskins. The Giants do not plan to bench Manning until the playoffs are out of the question, Vacchiano adds. The 37-year-old quarterback has played well against the 49ers and Buccaneers and will face a battered Eagles secondary this week.
But the team would like to see what it has in Lauletta, a fourth-round rookie out of Division I-FCS Richmond, despite his legal issues. The Giants would, if possible, like to see third-stringer Alex Tanney on the field as well, per Vacchiano, though that might be a tough ask. One plan for Lauletta would hinge on the Giants either leading by a big margin or losing by one — similar to how an MLB team would use a mop-up reliever — to allow for a second-half switch, Vacchiano notes.
Last year, New York benched Manning for Geno Smith, snapping his historic start streak to cost both Jerry Reese and Ben McAdoo their jobs. Pat Shurmur, however, seems to like Lauletta’s prospects, per Vacchiano. So, if/when the Giants fall out of remote contention, some potentially awkward Lauletta substitution sequences may occur as the franchise explores how it will go about replacing Manning.
Manning is under contract through 2019 and has a no-trade clause in his deal, but with the Giants looking readier to rebuild, he may well be off the roster next year.

Giants’ Stewart Returns To Practice
Jonathan Stewart‘s season might not be over. The Giants designated the running back to return to practice, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com tweets.
A foot injury landed Stewart on injured reserve in September and the Giants have been cautiously optimistic about getting him back on the field. The Giants have a three-week use-it-or-lose-it window to activate the veteran starting today. If he is not placed on the 53-man roster by Dec. 6, he will be barred from playing for the Giants this year.
Of course, the Giants aren’t playing for much at this juncture of the year. Even after their win against the 49ers, the G-Men are 2-7 and likely ticketed for another high draft pick.
Rookie Saquon Barkley continues to impress and Stewart didn’t see a whole lot of work before his injury, so it will be interesting to see how he’s used when/if he comes back. In nine games, Barkley has averaged 4.5 yards per carry while adding 62 catches for 530 yards and seven touchdowns in total. In Stewart’s three games before the injury, he logged six carries for 17 yards.
The Giants have Stewart under contract through next year, but they can save $2.625MM by releasing him with just $250K in dead money. This could be Stewart’s chance to cement his place on the Giants’ 2019 roster and avoid going through free agency as a 32-year-old running back.
Giants GM Dave Gettleman Scouted Oregon QB Justin Herbert
- We learned that top decision-makers for the Giants were in attendance at the Oregon-Utah game yesterday to scout Oregon QB Justin Herbert, even though Herbert is unlikely to enter the 2019 draft. Greg Joyce of the New York Post confirms that GM Dave Gettleman was one of the attendees, along with assistant GM Kevin Abrams and West Coast scout Jeremy Breit. If Herbert changes his mind and declares for the draft, New York will certainly be in play for him.
Giants/49ers Could Be Postponed
Fires are raging through California right now, and they could wind up having an impact on the NFL slate this week. The Rams’ practice facility is very close to some of the fires, but their game against the Seahawks is expected to go on without interruption. That may not be the case for the 49ers, who host the Giants on Monday night.
“Postponement of Monday night’s game against the Giants could potentially happen”, according to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk. According to Florio, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged that postponement or relocation were very real possibilities, and said the team had to cut practice short on Friday because of the air quality. It’s a situation that bears watching over the course of the weekend.
